Are Hot Air Brushes Damaging to Hair? Heat, Technique, and Protection Explained

Hot air brushes can contribute to hair damage because they use heated airflow. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) warns that excessive heat can damage hair and recommends limiting blow-drying and using low or medium heat. That advice applies reasonably to hot air brushes, but the AAD guidance does not establish a device-specific safe temperature or quantify the risk from using one.

How hot air brushes can affect hair

A hot air brush combines airflow and a heated styling surface or barrel to dry and shape hair. Because it exposes hair to heat, excessive or frequent use could contribute to damage. The AAD states that excessive heat can damage hair, but its guidance addresses heat styling generally rather than hot air brushes as a distinct device. It does not show that every use causes damage, or provide a damage rate for these brushes. AAD: Hair styling without damage

How to reduce heat and handling stress

Let hair air-dry partway first

Allowing hair to partially air-dry before using a heated tool reduces the time it is exposed to blow-drying heat. The AAD also advises limiting how often you blow-dry. It does not specify a hot-air-brush schedule or a universally safe number of uses per week. AAD: Hair styling without damage

Choose a lower setting

If your brush offers heat settings, use low or medium heat rather than assuming the highest setting is necessary. AAD recommends low or medium heat as general hair-care guidance; it does not identify a specific safe temperature for hot air brushes. AAD: Tips for healthy hair

  • Closer-to-root styling: The smaller 2.4 in oval barrel offers added control for root lift, soft waves, flips, and curls
  • Best for shorter lengths: Choose Volumizer Plus for chin length to mid-length hair or when you want more precision than a 2.8 in barrel
  • 6 heat settings: Select Cool, Low, Medium, or High for more styling control across drying, shaping, and refreshing
  • Detachable for storage: Remove the brush head for compact storage and easier packing; the detachable design also enables dryer use
  • Detangle and smooth: Charcoal-infused pins and tufted bristles help detangle, grip, and guide hair while creating a polished finish

Be gentle, especially with wet hair

Wet hair is more fragile and can break more easily when brushed or combed. The AAD advises most people to handle wet hair as little as possible. Its detangling advice differs for tightly curled or textured hair, so follow guidance appropriate to your texture rather than applying one handling rule to everyone. AAD: Hair styling without damage

Consider a labeled heat protectant

Some leave-in conditioners help protect hair from heat tools such as blow dryers. Check the product packaging for a heat-protectant claim. This may help reduce exposure-related stress, but it does not make hot styling damage-free. AAD: Dermatologists’ top tips for using leave-in conditioner

What the evidence does not establish

The cited AAD guidance does not establish a hot-air-brush-specific safe temperature, use schedule, damage percentage, or ranking of brands and models. It also does not compare these brushes directly with other styling tools. Treat general heat-care recommendations as sensible precautions, not as a guarantee that a particular setting or product eliminates risk.

The AAD’s guidance is qualitative: it supports reducing heat exposure and handling hair gently, but it does not provide a numerical threshold that would make a hot air brush safe for every person or hair type.
