A holiday sale label or crossed-out price does not prove that an item is a bargain. Check the exact product’s price history, compare its current full cost with the same item at other sellers, and make sure you qualify for any promotion. A chart can show whether today’s price is low relative to recorded prices; it cannot predict future prices or establish by itself whether a former-price claim complied with the law.
What makes a sale discount genuine?
For U.S. former-price comparisons, the Federal Trade Commission’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say the reference price should be a real price at which the item was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. An artificially inflated reference price used to make a later reduction look larger can create a false bargain claim. The FTC states: “If the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, it provides a legitimate basis for the advertising of a price comparison.” (FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, § 233.1(a).)

How to check a holiday sale price
- Identify the exact item. Note the model number and relevant details such as size, color, storage capacity, or other configuration. Record the seller if it affects the offer.
- Check the item’s price history. Look at the current price against both the recent trend and the longer record available. Ask whether the current offer is unusually low, typical, or above earlier lows—not just whether it is below the seller’s crossed-out price.
- Compare the full offer elsewhere. Check the same product and configuration at other current sellers. Include delivery charges and conditions such as membership, coupon, payment method, or other promotion eligibility when applicable. The FTC’s consumer advice puts it simply: “Comparison shopping is your best bet.” (FTC, Going out of business sales: what to know.)
- Decide whether the price works for you. A price chart records past prices; it does not forecast the next sale, guarantee availability, or decide whether an advertised former price was legally valid.
- Check the amount you are actually charged. Verify the price shown at checkout or scanned at the register, and keep the receipt. The FTC includes these precautions in its holiday-shopping guidance.
Price-history tools: what they can and cannot show
These options document different kinds of price history and tracking. Coverage and recorded data can vary, so use a chart as evidence about the prices its service records rather than as a complete account of every seller or offer.

None of these descriptions establishes that a tool captures every seller, configuration, shipping charge, or promotion condition. Check the service’s current interface and terms before relying on a particular feature.

There is no single lookback rule that should be applied everywhere. The FTC guidance cited here does not establish a universal numeric period for U.S. former-price comparisons. The European Commission describes a distinct EU requirement: when announcing a price reduction, shops, including online marketplaces, must indicate the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. That EU rule should not be presented as a universal U.S. requirement. Consult current local rules for the jurisdiction where the offer is made. European Commission, consumer-protection sweeps.

How to make the decision
- Consider buying now if the exact item’s price is compelling against its history and the full current cost at comparable sellers, and it meets your needs.
- Wait or buy elsewhere if the current price is not meaningfully below a reasonable comparison price, or if a different seller offers the same item for less after shipping and eligibility conditions.
- Do not treat the lowest recorded price as a promise. Historical lows do not ensure that the price will return, remain in stock, or be available to you.
