Choose insulation for the season and how long you will be outside, and add removable traction aids when winter paths are icy. Glacier travel is different: neither ordinary hiking boots nor winter boots alone are enough.
Why hiking boots are the better all-purpose choice
Iceland hiking guidance emphasizes protection from wet, changeable weather and varied ground. Ferðafélag Íslands recommends wind- and waterproof clothing as basic equipment in any season, with other gear chosen for personal needs, trip length, forecast, and time of year. Its Laugavegur route guidance specifically recommends sturdy waterproof hiking boots for rocky paths and snow-covered sections. That is useful evidence for hiking—not a rule that every visitor needs a heavy boot for every outing.

For a trip mixing sightseeing with walks or hikes, start with comfortable, sturdy waterproof hiking boots. They offer a practical balance for damp, uneven trails without assuming that every day will involve prolonged exposure to cold. The guidance does not identify a particular brand or model as tested or best.
When winter boots make more sense
Winter boots can be the better choice when your plans involve extended time outdoors in cold conditions and warmth is a priority. There is no universal insulation threshold in the local guidance: decide based on the season, forecast, activity, and how long you expect to be outside. For a mixed itinerary, you can also add warmth with suitable socks and layers rather than choosing a bulky boot for every walk.
#1 Best Overall
- OMNI-TECH: For prolonged exposure to moderate rain and snow. Multilayered, waterproof, seam-sealed construction that allows the inside to breathe, keeping feet dry and comfortable no matter the conditions.
- TECHLITE: For lightweight impact absorption on varied surfaces. Long-lasting cushioning with high energy return.
- OMNI-GRIP: For multi-terrain traction on rock, dirt, and gravel, in wet/dry conditions. Specially formulated compounds and tread design for cross-terrain stability and grip with strategically blended lug patterns.
- HANDY FEATURES: This adventure-ready hiker features a durable leather and mesh upper, metal hardware, and a cushioned collar for comfort.
- BUILT TO LAST: Columbia’s attention to detail is what sets our footwear apart. Specifying only the highest quality materials, expert stitching, and craftsmanship. This is long-lasting footwear you will enjoy for seasons to come.
Warmth and ice grip are separate considerations. A warm winter boot does not automatically provide reliable traction on ice. Visit Austurland recommends ice cleats, grips, or anti-slip soles for winter traction; removable grips can be useful on icy walking surfaces.
Choose footwear for the activity
| Trip activity | Practical footwear choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| City sightseeing and maintained viewpoints | Comfortable footwear suited to the day’s conditions; sturdy waterproof hiking boots are a versatile option if walks are also planned. | Forecast, wet or uneven ground, and how long you will be outside. |
| Day hikes or varied trails | Sturdy waterproof hiking boots. | Route guidance and current conditions; Laugavegur guidance calls for waterproof boots on rocky and snow-covered sections. |
| Winter walks on icy paths | Footwear warm enough for the expected exposure, plus removable ice cleats or grips when appropriate. | Current ice conditions and whether the traction aid suits the walking surface. These aids are not glacier crampons. |
| Highland or multi-day hikes | Waterproof hiking boots appropriate to the route and season. | Route-specific packing guidance, forecast, trip length, and your personal needs. |
| Glacier excursion | Boots and specialist equipment specified by the guide or operator; ordinary hiking or winter boots alone are not sufficient. | Boot compatibility with the required glacier crampons and the operator’s equipment and experience requirements. |
Glacier trips need specialist equipment
A glacier outing is not simply a cold hike. The Environment Agency warns that glacier tongues are dangerous without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment, and says glacier trips require experience and knowledge of specialist equipment. Ferðafélag Íslands lists sturdy leather hiking boots or rigid glacier boots, along with glacier crampons that fit.

Check the specific guide or operator’s boot and crampon requirements before booking or setting out. The Environment Agency identifies an organized trip with experienced guides as the safest option. Removable ice cleats for ordinary winter paths are not a substitute for glacier crampons or guided glacier equipment.

Check conditions before you go
- Match footwear to the itinerary. Separate city walks, day hikes, highland routes, icy winter paths, and glacier activities; they do not all call for the same setup.
- Check the forecast and route guidance. Iceland’s weather and wind can shape what you need, and conditions can change. Use current forecasts and the route’s latest recommendations.
- Adjust insulation and traction independently. Consider warmth for the duration and conditions of outdoor exposure, then assess whether walking surfaces are icy enough to warrant removable grips.
- Confirm specialist requirements with the glacier operator. Ask what boots and equipment are required and whether your footwear fits the specified crampons.
Ferðafélag Íslands sums up Iceland’s changeable conditions this way: “The only predictable thing about the Icelandic weather is the wind, as it is almost always windy!” Its equipment advice also says that other gear depends on “your personal needs, length of the trip, weather forecast and the time of year.”
