Governance is becoming more visible in UK cyber hiring and more influential inside organisations, but the available evidence does not show a nationwide surge in governance-only vacancies. The clearest signal is a rising mix of governance responsibilities across cyber security, board support and regulation—not a reliable count of new jobs caused by governance.
What the evidence says about UK governance jobs
Three different measures point to growing attention to governance, but they describe different things: skills requested in cyber job adverts, governance professionals’ reports about their work, and projected employment across a wider group of occupations. None is a direct national count of governance vacancies.

| Evidence | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cyber job adverts in 2025 | Governance appeared among requested skills in 20% of 34,932 UK core cyber postings. | The number of governance job titles, all UK vacancies or year-on-year growth. |
| Governance Market Survey, 2026 | Views and reported experiences of 971 governance professionals across multiple organisation types. | A representative count of new jobs or a vacancy trend. |
| Professional and business services projections, 2025–2035 | Modelled employment expansion and replacement demand across 20 selected priority occupations. | Governance-specific job growth or proof that governance drives the projection. |
The figures are useful as signals of demand and changing responsibilities, not as interchangeable measures. For example, an advertised skill can be requested for a cyber role whose main purpose is security, while a governance professional’s increased workload may be handled by an existing team rather than a new hire.
Why governance is showing up in cyber security hiring
In Lightcast data covering January–December 2025, governance was requested in 20% of 34,932 core UK cyber job postings. Auditing appeared in 22% and risk management in 19%. The figures come from online adverts analysed in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2026 cyber security labour-market report; they describe skill mentions, not separate job categories.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That mix makes sense in cyber work: organisations need people who can protect systems and also assess controls, document risk, meet standards and show that security decisions are accountable. Other skills mentioned alongside governance include ISO/IEC 27001, incident response, automation and security controls. AI-related skills appeared in 9% of core cyber postings in 2025, compared with 4% in 2024. The report’s interview participants anticipated increased importance for governance, risk and compliance (GRC), including possible AI-governance roles, but those expectations are qualitative—not a forecast of a specific number of vacancies.
The same report says core cyber postings skew toward applicants with experience. Governance appearing in adverts therefore should not be read as evidence of an easy entry-level route. A candidate may need to combine governance knowledge with cyber, audit, risk or technical capability, depending on the job.
What governance professionals say is changing
The 2026 Governance Market Survey, conducted by The Core Partnership and The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland (CGIUKI), received responses from 971 governance professionals working across listed companies, financial services, private businesses, charities and not-for-profit organisations. Respondents described a function taking on more strategic and advisory work:

- 65% said governance’s influence within their organisation was increasing.
- 66% said supporting board information quality and decision-making was becoming more important.
- 59% said board and executive succession planning was becoming a growing responsibility.
- 50% said AI literacy for boards was becoming more important.
These findings help explain why governance work can expand even when a new position is not created: board materials, succession planning, organisational change and new technology can add responsibilities to existing roles. The same survey points to capacity pressure: 74% reported increased workload over the previous 12 months, and 42% said their governance function was not adequately resourced. Those responses describe participants’ experiences; they are not a measure of how many employers are recruiting.
Neil Newman, CGIUKI’s Commercial Director, described governance professionals as “increasingly trusted advisers at the heart of organisational decision-making.” The survey’s breadth across organisation types is important, but its results should not be treated as a census of the UK workforce.
How the wider jobs projections fit—and where they do not
Skills England and the Department for Business and Trade project that 20 selected professional and business services priority occupations will add 116,000 jobs, or 9%, between 2025 and 2035. They estimate replacement demand of 419,000 workers over 2026–2035; combining expansion and replacement produces total demand of about 535,000 workers across those occupations. This is a broad sector estimate, not a forecast for governance jobs.

Replacement demand means workers will be needed to fill roles as people leave or move on; it is not the same as net job creation. The assessment also notes that 14 of the 20 priority occupations are shared with other sectors, making it especially important not to attribute all projected demand to one function. Skills England separately projects about 1.8 million additional jobs—around one-quarter growth—across the wider set of UK priority occupations by 2035. That economy-wide figure likewise does not count governance jobs.
Skills England cautions that its estimates indicate broad trends rather than precise forecasts, with uncertainty around AI-exposed occupations, particularly digital roles. Projections can help show the scale of potential workforce change, but they cannot establish that governance is the cause of that growth.
What governance work can include
“Governance” is not one uniform job family in these sources. In board and corporate settings, the surveyed work includes supporting decision-making and information quality, succession planning, organisational change and stakeholder expectations. In cyber security, governance is one capability within roles that may also require auditing, risk management, security standards and technical controls. Regulatory governance is a further strand: it concerns the skills and judgement needed inside organisations that regulate or oversee activity.

The government’s Core Regulatory Skills Framework, published by the Department for Business and Trade and the Civil Service Operational Delivery Profession in February 2026, offers a shared language for regulatory knowledge, skills and competencies at different career levels. It says regulation underpins almost all areas of the UK economy and frames regulatory skills as important to supporting growth and investment without unnecessary burdens. The framework is a reference for capability, not evidence that every governance role requires the same qualification.

Start with the kind of governance work you want to do, because the skill mix differs by setting:
- Board and company governance: build capability in preparing clear board information, supporting decision-making, handling succession processes and understanding organisational responsibilities.
- Cyber GRC: pair governance and risk knowledge with familiarity with auditing, security controls, incident response and relevant standards such as ISO/IEC 27001. Some roles may also expect technical or prior cyber experience.
- Regulatory work: use the Core Regulatory Skills Framework to understand competencies expected across career levels and identify areas to develop.
- AI governance: develop enough AI literacy to help boards and teams assess how AI affects decisions, risks and accountability. Survey responses show this responsibility gaining attention; they do not establish a standard job specification.
A CGIUKI qualification is one established professional-development route for governance practitioners: 69% of the 971 respondents to the 2026 survey held a Chartered Governance Institute qualification. That result does not mean the qualification is mandatory or guarantees employment. Use job descriptions in your chosen sector to check which credentials and experience employers actually request.

How to read future claims about governance hiring
When a headline says governance jobs are booming, check what its number counts. A credible comparison should identify the population, period and measure:
- Is the figure a count of job titles, online adverts, skill mentions, survey responses or modelled occupations?
- Does it cover the UK, a particular sector or a particular kind of employer?
- Is it a change over time, a snapshot, or a projection?
- Does “demand” mean additional jobs, replacement hiring, or both?
Also treat official occupation-demand indicators carefully. The Department for Education’s 2025 Occupations in Demand release combines multiple indicators and is designated “official statistics in development.” Its notes say its changed 2024 methodology and reference periods do not allow simple comparisons with the earlier release.
What this means for jobseekers and employers
For jobseekers, the evidence supports investigating governance-related roles—especially where governance intersects with cyber security, board effectiveness or regulation—but not assuming a guaranteed or fast-growing standalone job market. Search by the work itself as well as by the word “governance,” and assess each vacancy’s sector, seniority, technical requirements and experience expectations.
For employers, the survey’s reported workload increases and resourcing concerns are a reason to examine whether governance responsibilities are adequately supported. The evidence does not prescribe a staffing level, but it does show why a growing remit can create pressure even without a corresponding increase in headcount.
The best-supported conclusion is a shift in the visibility and scope of governance skills, with cyber postings providing a measurable example and governance professionals reporting broader responsibilities. A precise national forecast for governance-only vacancies is not established by these figures.
