Are Furniture Store Gift Cards and Store Credit Still Valid After a Closure?

Sometimes. If one showroom closes but the retailer still operates, another location or its website may accept the balance. If the whole business closes or enters bankruptcy, redemption can become difficult or impossible—even when the card has not expired. The answer also depends on the state and whether you have a purchased gift card, return credit, promotional credit, or a deposit for undelivered furniture.

What kind of closure happened?

One location closed

A local showroom closing does not necessarily mean the whole retailer has stopped operating. Check the retailer’s website and contact customer service or another open location to ask whether it accepts the balance online, in-store, or at another branch. Ask whether a company that acquired the retailer will honor it, rather than assuming that it will. Michigan’s consumer guidance recommends checking again later if a retailer is not currently accepting cards; it also notes that competitors may sometimes honor them, but that is not guaranteed. Michigan Attorney General: Gift cards.

The whole retailer closed or filed for bankruptcy

If the company has stopped operating, there may be no open business from which to redeem the balance. Bankruptcy or a court-supervised closing can add deadlines or restrictions. Oregon’s Department of Justice warns that a local-store closure or bankruptcy may make a card unusable regardless of its expiration date. Oregon DOJ: Gift cards.

If bankruptcy has been filed, look for current official notices for that case and check any deadlines that apply to consumers. A company’s past policies or an old news story cannot establish what a current case allows.

Gift card, store credit, or furniture deposit?

“Store credit” can describe different arrangements, and the terms may matter as much as the label. Identify how the balance arose before checking the retailer’s policy or state law.

  • Purchased gift card: A fixed-value card bought for money may be treated differently from credit issued after a return.
  • Return credit or credit memo: This may be a distinct instrument. Florida law, for example, expressly defines credit memos to include instruments issued in exchange for returned merchandise and addresses them alongside gift certificates. That Florida rule does not determine rights elsewhere. Florida Statutes § 501.95.
  • Promotional card or credit: Promotional balances may have different terms and legal treatment from value purchased by a customer. Check the specific terms and applicable law.
  • Deposit on furniture not delivered: A deposit for an order is not automatically a gift-card balance. Keep the order documents and payment records, and ask the payment provider about dispute options if the seller did not deliver the goods.

Federal Regulation E defines covered gift certificates and store gift cards and includes exclusions. Its expiration rules do not guarantee that a closed merchant will accept a balance. 12 CFR § 1005.20.

Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.

Why the answer can vary by state

There is no single outcome that can safely be applied to every U.S. retailer and every kind of credit. State rules may address gift certificates or return credits differently, and the relevant details include where the balance was issued and what it represents.

  • California: The California Attorney General’s consumer guidance says California law requires businesses to honor gift certificates even if they file bankruptcy. This is a California-specific statement; apply current law to the particular card and case. California DOJ: Gift cards.
  • New York: General Business Law § 396-i addresses acceptance of gift certificates and store credit, including in closing-out or defunct-business sales, and restricts changing terms after issuance. Its conditions apply to New York cases, not automatically nationwide. New York General Business Law § 396-i.
  • Federal rules: Regulation E applies to defined categories of gift certificates and store gift cards, subject to exclusions. Expiration protections should not be confused with a guarantee of redemption after a merchant closes. 12 CFR § 1005.20.

These examples are not a survey of every state. For a specific balance, check the current rules in the state that applies or contact that state’s attorney general consumer-protection office.

What to do if your furniture store closed

  1. Confirm the retailer’s status. Check its official website and contact customer service or another open branch. Ask directly whether the balance can be used in-store, online, at another location, or with a successor company.
  2. Identify and document the balance. Keep the card or electronic account, its terms, purchase or return receipt, order paperwork, and any screenshots showing the balance.
  3. Ask for the decision in writing. Save emails, chat transcripts, and notices explaining whether the retailer will accept the balance. If it currently refuses, check periodically for a policy change.
  4. Check whether a bankruptcy case exists. If so, consult official case notices for current instructions and deadlines rather than relying on old closure announcements.
  5. Contact your card issuer promptly if an order was not delivered. If you paid by credit card and the seller failed to provide the furniture or service, ask the issuer about dispute or chargeback options. North Carolina’s Department of Justice says a refund may be possible, but timing and eligibility depend on the transaction and issuer; a chargeback is not guaranteed. North Carolina DOJ: Credit cards.
  6. Check state consumer guidance. Give the state office the retailer’s name, the state, the type of balance, and whether the business is operating or in bankruptcy.

What an unexpired card does—and does not—tell you

An expiration date and the ability to redeem a balance are separate questions. Federal rules may protect covered gift-card funds from expiring under specified conditions, but those protections do not make a closed retailer operational or require a business with no accepting location to process a redemption. Oregon DOJ likewise cautions that a closure or bankruptcy can make a gift card unusable regardless of its printed expiration date. Check both the card’s terms and the merchant’s current status.
