Are Freelancers Being Ruined by AI? What the Evidence Actually Shows

Some freelancers are already losing work and platform income to generative AI, especially in routine writing, coding, editing and image-production tasks. But “ruined” is too broad: the strongest studies cover particular online marketplaces and short periods, while newer data shows simultaneous substitution, lower prices on some contracts and rapid growth in complex, AI-assisted work.

What the headline gets right—and wrong

The clearest negative evidence is not hypothetical. After text- and image-generating tools became available, freelancers in highly exposed occupations saw fewer employment opportunities and lower earnings on an online labor platform. Other work found fewer job advertisements for automation-prone tasks.

Those findings do not establish that every freelancer, every client relationship or the entire freelance economy is collapsing. The studies measure different things—job posts, contracts, total monthly platform earnings and earnings per contract—across different occupations and time windows. A result for one marketplace cannot be treated as a loss from every source of a freelancer’s income.

What the peer-reviewed study found

Employment and earnings fell in highly exposed occupations

Xiang Hui, Oren Reshef and Luofeng Zhou’s study, “The Short-Term Effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Employment: Evidence from an Online Labor Market,” was published online on September 24, 2024, in Organization Science 35(6). It examines a large online labor platform around the early releases of text- and image-generating AI.

Freelancers in occupations judged more exposed to those tools experienced declines in both employment and earnings after the tools’ introduction. The examples discussed by the Brookings Institution include copyediting and proofreading for text models and graphic design for image models.

Strong past performance did not provide a clear shield

The paper’s abstract reports that high-quality freelancers were not protected from the adverse employment effect. It also presents suggestive evidence that top freelancers may have been disproportionately affected. That is a warning against assuming that reputation alone makes routine deliverables safe from automation; it is not proof that every highly rated freelancer lost income.

Brookings’ plain-language estimates

Brookings’ analysis of the study reports that more AI-exposed freelancers received about 2% fewer monthly contracts and earned about 5% less in total monthly platform earnings. Those are platform outcomes over the study’s early adjustment period, not a measurement of all revenue, direct clients or offline work. Brookings describes effects over roughly the first six to eight months after launch and says text- and image-tool effects were of similar magnitude.

Job postings also fell, but the remaining work changed

A separate 2024 CESifo working-paper summary by Ozge Demirci, Jonas Hannane and Xinrong Zhu compares automation-prone work with more manual-intensive work on online freelancing platforms. Within eight months of ChatGPT’s introduction, job posts for automation-prone writing and coding work fell by 21% relative to the comparison group. After image-generating AI arrived, image-creation job posts fell by 17%.

The same analysis reports that jobs remaining in those automation-prone categories were more complex and offered higher pay. This is a sorting process, not evidence that every worker moved into a better-paid role. It also explains why a drop in job posts can coexist with higher prices for a narrower set of assignments.

These percentages should not be added to or substituted for the 2% contract and 5% monthly-earnings estimates. Job posts are employer demand signals; contracts are completed engagements; total monthly earnings differ from pay per contract or hourly pay.

How losses and growth can appear at the same time

Upwork’s Future Workforce Index 2026, released July 14, 2026, shows a later and more divided marketplace picture. Upwork reports descriptive platform trends rather than an economy-wide causal estimate:

Platform measure Reported change How to interpret it
Generative-AI and creative-production contract starts 90% year over year More contracts started in these categories, but this does not show that every freelancer gained work.
Earnings per contract in those categories 13% lower year over year Growing volume came with lower average value per contract.
Freelancers doing more complex work with AI 45% higher earnings year over year Upwork’s category measure; it is not a guaranteed return for an individual.
AI-augmented professional services 72% higher volume and 22% higher earnings year over year Shows expansion in a particular marketplace classification.
Skilled U.S. knowledge workers who freelance 38%, up from 28% the previous year Upwork’s survey of 2,400 defined skilled workers in March–April 2026, not all U.S. workers.

The combination matters: AI-related contract starts can surge while the average contract becomes cheaper. At the same time, freelancers who use AI in more complex services can see stronger earnings. Upwork has a commercial interest in its marketplace, so these figures should be read as company-reported platform trends, not a neutral estimate of the whole labor market.

Which freelance work is most exposed?

The evidence points less to an occupation-wide switch than to a difference between tasks. Work with a standardized brief, predictable output and little need for context is easier for clients to test with an AI system. Work that combines domain knowledge, judgment, accountability and coordination is harder to reduce to a one-shot prompt.

More exposed pattern More defensible pattern
Routine copyediting, proofreading or basic text production Editorial judgment, subject-matter expertise, fact checking and responsibility for the final result
Template-driven coding or small, well-specified fixes Architecture, integration, security, testing and maintenance in a real system
Basic image variations or standardized production graphics Creative direction, brand systems, art direction and work requiring client-specific context
Deliverables judged mainly by speed and unit price Projects where outcomes, risk reduction or business knowledge matter more than raw output volume

This is a risk framework, not a prediction for an individual. A routine task can still require a human in a regulated, confidential or unusually complex setting, while a sophisticated professional can lose a standardized slice of their service.

Clients still distinguish human-supervised work from AI-only output

Upwork Research Institute’s 2025 analysis reports an October 2024 survey of 673 clients. Sixty-six percent said they had high trust in outputs from freelancers using AI, compared with 26% expressing high trust in AI-only output. This is an Upwork client survey, not a general-public trust poll and not proof that clients will pay a premium for every human-assisted service.

The result is consistent with a marketplace in which clients adopt AI but still want a person to interpret the brief, check errors, handle exceptions and own the deliverable. It also helps explain why augmentation and substitution can happen together: AI can remove a low-value step while increasing demand for oversight or higher-level work.

What freelancers can do with this evidence

No strategy guarantees protection from automation, but the measured pattern suggests several practical choices. Treat them as risk management rather than promises of higher income.

  1. Map your services by task. Separate standardized production from work that requires research, judgment, client discovery, quality assurance or accountability. Price and market the latter as an outcome, not merely as hours of output.
  2. Use AI where it improves delivery, while retaining responsibility. The client-survey gap between freelancer-assisted and AI-only output makes review, verification and communication part of the value proposition. Do not claim that an AI system performed checks it did not perform.
  3. Build evidence of domain knowledge. Case studies, clear methods, references and examples of decisions made under constraints are harder to compare with a generic generated sample than a commodity deliverable is.
  4. Watch the right numbers. Track job-post volume, proposals, contracts won, total monthly platform earnings, earnings per contract and hourly earnings separately. A rise in one can hide a fall in another.
  5. Expect category churn. New AI-assisted services may grow quickly, but early growth can bring price competition, as Upwork’s 90% increase in starts alongside a 13% decline in per-contract earnings illustrates.

Jennifer Brett, PhD, managing director of the Upwork Research Institute, summarized the employer-side challenge in Upwork’s July 2026 release: “For businesses, giving employees access to AI tools is only the first step. The real work is redesigning workflows, identifying skill gaps, and investing in employee learning to close those gaps and deliver results.” That is a company research statement, not an independent forecast of any freelancer’s income, but it captures why tool access alone does not determine who wins the work.

How to read the “job killer” claim responsibly

  • Ask what unit is being measured: a task, occupation, platform, client survey or the whole freelance economy.
  • Check the outcome: job posts, contracts, total monthly earnings and per-contract earnings are not interchangeable.
  • Check the window: the early six-to-eight-month shocks studied in 2024 may differ from marketplace categories reported in 2026.
  • Check the geography and sample: platform data and Upwork’s defined U.S. skilled-worker survey do not represent every country or worker.
  • Separate substitution from augmentation: fewer routine assignments can coexist with more complex AI-assisted projects.

The defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline: generative AI has already damaged some freelance opportunities and compressed prices for some exposed tasks, while creating or expanding other categories of work. Whether an individual freelancer is “ruined” depends on the tasks they sell, the clients they reach, the platform they use and how quickly the value of their service shifts from repeatable execution to context, judgment and accountable results.
