Are Free VPNs Safe to Use? What to Check Before You Connect

Some free VPNs can be safe to use, but “free” is not a security guarantee. A VPN routes the traffic it covers through servers controlled by its provider, so you are shifting trust from your internet provider or local Wi-Fi network to that VPN operator. Check what the service covers, what it collects and shares, and what independent security evidence exists before connecting.

What a VPN protects—and what it does not

A VPN can encrypt covered traffic between your device and the VPN server, making it harder for your internet provider or someone on the same public Wi-Fi network to inspect that traffic. But the VPN provider becomes an important intermediary: it may be able to observe information about traffic routed through its servers. The Federal Trade Commission cautions that not all VPN apps encrypt information, and some may encrypt only part of it. FTC guidance on VPN apps

A VPN also does not make you anonymous. Websites may still recognize you through accounts you sign into, information you submit, cookies, or other identifying details. A VPN mainly changes which intermediary can see your routed traffic; it does not erase your identity from the services you use.

Can a free VPN see your data?

Potentially, yes. The provider operates the VPN servers, and the service may handle information about the traffic it routes. What it can observe depends on its design, encryption, and which traffic passes through it. A privacy policy can explain what the company says it collects, retains, or shares, but a “no logs” claim alone is not independent proof that the claim is accurate.

Free pricing by itself does not prove that a provider sells user data. Still, advertising, sharing information with third parties, and routing traffic through other parties are documented risks worth checking in the provider’s terms and privacy policy. The FTC recommends looking closely at how a VPN handles information and whether it shares data. FTC guidance on VPN apps

Does a free VPN protect all your apps?

No. Coverage depends on the product. Some services route traffic from the whole device, while others cover only a particular browser or selected apps. A browser-only VPN will not protect traffic from your email app, games, or other browsers.

Firefox’s built-in VPN is browser-only

Mozilla’s built-in Firefox VPN routes Firefox browser traffic through a secure proxy and masks the browser’s IP address. Mozilla documents it as free, with a 50 GB limit per calendar month, and says the feature is being introduced through a staged rollout. It does not cover other apps on the device. Mozilla also says the feature may record whether a connection succeeded or failed and how much data was used on a given day, while stating that it does not log visited sites or communication content. These details apply to Firefox’s feature, not to free VPN services generally. Mozilla’s Firefox built-in VPN documentation

What to check before installing a free VPN

  1. Identify the provider. Look beyond the app-store listing and investigate who develops and operates the service. A slogan such as “no logs” is a claim to verify, not proof.
  2. Read the privacy policy and terms. Look for what information is collected, how long it is retained, whether it is shared with third parties, whether advertising is involved, and whether traffic is routed through another company.
  3. Confirm what traffic is protected. Find out whether coverage is browser-only, limited to selected apps, or device-wide. Check the data cap and any other usage limits.
  4. Check encryption and protocol details. Look for a clear explanation of what protections and protocols the service uses, and whether the provider explains which traffic is encrypted. Do not assume every app encrypts every connection.
  5. Review requested permissions. Consider whether each permission makes sense for a VPN’s function. Treat access unrelated to routing or protecting network traffic as a reason to investigate further.
  6. Look for independent security evidence. Note who performed an audit, when it happened, which product and version were examined, what was in scope, and whether findings were addressed.
  7. Assess provider accountability. Check whether the operator is identifiable and provides clear, usable privacy information and a way to contact it.

How much does a VPN audit prove?

An audit is useful evidence, but it has boundaries. For example, Mozilla reports that Cure53 audited Mozilla VPN apps in 2023 and that the listed findings rated medium or higher were addressed. That is evidence about the reviewed apps and audit period; it does not guarantee the security of every VPN provider, every future version, server infrastructure, or every privacy claim. Mozilla’s 2023 VPN security audit summary

Match the audit to the claim you care about. A client-app review does not automatically verify how servers are operated or whether a provider’s data-handling practices match its policy. Read the stated scope and findings rather than treating the word “audited” as a blanket endorsement.

When might a free VPN be the wrong fit?

A free option may suit a limited need if its coverage, limits, and data practices are clear and acceptable to you. Look for another approach if you need protection for traffic outside a single browser, if a monthly cap is too restrictive, or if the provider’s ownership, data sharing, encryption, or audit evidence is unclear. A paid service may offer broader coverage, but paying does not by itself establish that a provider is trustworthy.
