Are Foldable Phones Really Dustproof? Pixel, Galaxy and Razr Ratings Explained

No current foldable phone in the official evidence is guaranteed dustproof. Google markets the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with an IP68 rating but says explicitly that it is not dustproof or waterproof. Samsung gives the Galaxy Z Fold7 an IP48 rating that covers solid particles larger than 1 mm, while Motorola lists controlled-laboratory IP46, IP48 and IP49 tests for its razr fold and still advises avoiding dust.

The practical answer is to treat an IP code as a test result for a new, intact phone—not a promise that fine particles can never enter a hinge or affect an inner display. Wear, repairs, disassembly and physical damage can reduce the protection.

What “dustproof” would mean for a foldable phone

“Dustproof” sounds absolute: no dust gets inside and dust cannot harm the device. An IP rating is narrower. It records how a product performed in specified tests under the IEC 60529 system. The first digit concerns protection from solid particles; the second concerns water. The rating does not promise identical performance after months of opening and closing, a repair, a drop or damage to a seal.

That distinction matters more on a foldable because the phone has a hinge and a flexible inner display. Motorola’s own guidance warns that dust may reduce hinge life or damage the display, even while listing IP test results. Google likewise limits its IP68 statement to the condition of the device when it leaves the factory.

Official dust-protection claims compared

Phone Published rating or test What the qualifier says Dust-related warning and limits
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold IP68 Google advertises water and dust resistance. Google’s safety guide says the phone is not dustproof or waterproof. Protection is specified when it leaves the factory and can diminish through ordinary wear, repair, disassembly or damage.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 IP48 The specification says it resists solid particles larger than 1 mm. The statement is limited to that particle-size threshold; it does not establish exclusion of finer dust or a lifetime guarantee.
Motorola razr fold IP46, IP48 and IP49 tests Motorola describes testing under controlled laboratory conditions. The guidance says the phone is not dustproof and advises avoiding dust because it may reduce hinge life or damage the display.

These are not independent head-to-head dust-ingress tests. The published material supports comparison of each manufacturer’s rating, qualifier and warning, but not a ranking of real-world durability.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: IP68, but not dustproof

What Google advertises

Google’s product announcement describes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as IP68 water and dust resistant. That is the headline specification many buyers will see when comparing foldables.

What the safety guide limits

Google’s official safety and regulatory guide is more precise: “Your device is designed to comply with dust and water protection rating IP68 under IEC standard 60529 when it leaves the factory, but it is not dust proof or water proof.” Read literally, that statement rules out treating IP68 as an unconditional dustproof promise.

The phrase when it leaves the factory is important. Google says resistance can diminish through ordinary wear, repair, disassembly or damage. A phone that passed the relevant test when new may therefore have a different level of protection after its housing, hinge area or other components have been stressed or opened.

How to use the Pixel claim when deciding

  • Use IP68 as evidence of a tested level of resistance for an intact device, not as permission to expose the phone deliberately to dusty conditions.
  • Read the safety guide after any repair or physical damage; the original rating should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
  • Do not rewrite Google’s wording as “dustproof.” The manufacturer itself says that description is inaccurate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7: IP48 and a 1 mm threshold

What IP48 actually communicates

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet lists IP48 and states that the phone resists solid particles larger than 1 mm. That is a concrete particle-size qualifier, not a statement that every type of dust is blocked.

Fine household dust, grit and other particles smaller than 1 mm fall outside that specific wording. The sheet therefore cannot support a claim that the hinge or inner display is sealed against all dust. It also does not state how the protection changes with wear, opening cycles, repair or damage.

Questions the specification does not answer

  • It does not establish a dust-failure rate for the Fold7.
  • It does not provide an independent comparison with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold or razr fold.
  • It does not say that a case makes the hinge dustproof.

For a buyer, the useful takeaway is the boundary Samsung publishes: resistance to particles larger than 1 mm. Keep that boundary attached to the rating instead of treating IP48 as a blanket guarantee.

Motorola razr fold: laboratory tests with a direct dust warning

Three listed IP tests

Motorola’s hardware guidance lists IP46, IP48 and IP49 testing under controlled laboratory conditions. Those are test designations, not a claim that every razr fold will behave identically in every environment.

Why Motorola still says to avoid dust

Motorola’s guidance says the device is not dustproof and advises avoiding dust because exposure may reduce hinge life or damage the display. The UK support guidance carries the same practical caution. This warning addresses the parts a foldable owner is most concerned about: the hinge that moves and the display that folds.

Controlled laboratory testing cannot be converted into a promise of unlimited exposure. If a worksite, beach, workshop or trail routinely produces airborne grit, Motorola’s own care advice points toward avoidance rather than relying on the IP numbers.

Why an IP rating is not a lifetime guarantee

Testing describes a condition, not every future condition

Google explicitly ties its IP68 compliance to the phone leaving the factory. Ordinary wear can change that condition. The same limitation is a sensible way to interpret any foldable rating: a specification describes the tested product and procedure, while your phone accumulates use, impacts and environmental exposure.

Repairs and disassembly change the assumptions

Google specifically names repair and disassembly as events that can diminish resistance. After service, do not assume the original rating has been restored unless the manufacturer or authorized service documentation says so. A replacement part or resealing process is not evidence, by itself, that the phone has its factory protection again.

Damage matters even when it looks minor

Google also names damage as a reason resistance can diminish. A bent frame, cracked cover or compromised seam should be treated as a protection change, not merely a cosmetic issue. Motorola’s warning about hinge life and display damage reinforces why visible or suspected damage deserves conservative handling.

How to reduce dust risk in everyday use

The manufacturers’ advice supports avoidance and careful handling, not a magic cleaning technique. Use this practical routine without describing any accessory or method as dustproofing the phone.

  1. Identify your exact model and its official guide. Ratings and warnings differ between Pixel, Galaxy and razr models. Start with the product documentation linked above rather than a generic foldable-care list.
  2. Limit deliberate exposure. Do not take the phone into clouds of dust, loose grit or environments where particles can settle in the hinge simply because it has an IP rating. Motorola specifically advises avoiding dust.
  3. Check the phone after a dusty outing. Look for visible particles, damage or abnormal hinge behavior before repeatedly opening and closing the device. If anything appears wrong, consult the model’s support instructions.
  4. Treat repairs and disassembly as a protection reset. Google says resistance can diminish after these events. Ask the service provider what protection, if any, is warranted afterward instead of assuming the original IP claim still applies.
  5. Do not improvise a guarantee with a case. A model-specific case may help with ordinary handling, but none of the cited sources establishes that a case seals a foldable hinge against dust. Verify compatibility and describe only protection the case maker actually supports.
  6. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions. If the guide does not support a particular tool, liquid or technique, do not present it as a way to make the phone dustproof.

What to do if dust may have entered

When the phone still works normally

Stop unnecessary opening and closing, move away from the dusty environment and inspect the exterior in good light. Record any change in hinge movement or display behavior. The goal is to prevent further exposure while you consult the exact support guidance, not to prove that the phone is sealed.

When the hinge feels different

A hinge that becomes gritty, stiff, noisy or uneven is a reason to stop treating the IP rating as reassurance. Motorola specifically warns that dust may reduce hinge life. Arrange professional support and describe the exposure and symptoms accurately.

When the inner display is affected

Do not press, scrape or attempt to lift material from a flexible display based on a generic internet tip. Motorola’s guidance names display damage as a possible consequence of dust exposure. Use the manufacturer’s support route for the model and report any visible mark, touch problem or folding change.

How to read the three ratings without overclaiming

Published wording Safe interpretation Unsafe interpretation
IP68 on Pixel 10 Pro Fold Google advertises a tested dust-and-water rating for a factory-condition device, with explicit caveats. “The Pixel is dustproof forever.”
IP48 and particles larger than 1 mm on Galaxy Z Fold7 Samsung specifies resistance to particles above the stated size threshold. “No dust can enter the Fold7.”
IP46, IP48 and IP49 laboratory tests on razr fold Motorola reports controlled tests and still instructs owners to avoid dust. “The razr fold is safe in any dusty workplace.”

What the official evidence cannot tell you

No quantified foldable dust-failure statistic is established in these official materials. There is no supported percentage for hinge failures, no population-wide comparison and no independent test here that ranks one of the three phones above the others for real-world dust survival.

That absence is not a reason to ignore the ratings; it is a reason to keep their scope intact. Ratings, particle-size qualifiers, laboratory conditions and care warnings are product specifications. They are not a forecast of how many owners will experience a failure.

A buyer’s decision checklist

  • Need the clearest published caveat? The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s safety guide explicitly says IP68 does not make it dustproof and lists wear, repair, disassembly and damage as limiting factors.
  • Work around fine particles? The Galaxy Z Fold7 sheet’s “larger than 1 mm” wording does not cover all fine dust, so plan for avoidance rather than relying on IP48.
  • Considering a razr fold for a dusty environment? Motorola’s own guidance says to avoid dust because it may affect hinge life or the display, despite the listed IP tests.
  • Already own a foldable? Follow the exact model’s care guide, especially after impact, service or visible damage, and never assume a case provides a sealed hinge.

The practical verdict

Foldable phones can be dust resistant under specified test conditions, but the official wording does not support calling the latest models truly dustproof. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold carries an IP68 claim with a direct no-dustproof disclaimer; the Galaxy Z Fold7’s IP48 claim is qualified by resistance to particles larger than 1 mm; and Motorola’s razr fold guidance combines laboratory IP tests with an instruction to avoid dust. For all three, the safest interpretation is the same: protect the hinge and inner display, account for wear and damage, and treat the rating as a limited test result rather than a permanent seal.
