What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fingerprint smart locks can be secure enough for many homes, but “secure” is not a property of the fingerprint reader alone. The decisive details are model-specific: where enrollment and matching occur, whether any service outside the lock receives biometric information, how the stored representation is protected and deleted, how the lock handles resets and account changes, and what non-biometric entry method remains available.
A statement such as “fingerprints are stored locally” is useful because it describes a data path, not a complete security assessment. It does not by itself prove strong encryption, complete deletion, resistance to physical extraction or spoofing, or protection of the lock’s app, firmware and fallback credentials. Treat every manufacturer statement as a claim about that model unless an independent test report confirms it.

What a fingerprint smart lock actually stores
During enrollment, a reader captures characteristics of a finger and the lock creates some form of reference for later comparison. That reference is commonly called a biometric template. It may be mathematical feature data rather than a photograph, but the exact representation, whether a raw image is ever retained, and whether any derived data leaves the lock are implementation details that the product documentation must establish.
Recommended Free Tools
At the next entry attempt, the reader captures a new sample and compares it with the enrolled reference. The comparison can happen inside the lock, in a connected hub, or on a remote service. NIST Special Publication 800-63B-4, published in July 2025, explicitly discusses local and central comparison and says biometric data in its scope must be treated and secured as sensitive personal information. That guidance is a useful way to evaluate a lock; it is not a certification that consumer locks meet the standard.

Why a template is still sensitive
Biometric characteristics are persistent identifiers. NIST’s wording is direct: “Biometric characteristics do not constitute secrets.” A password can be replaced after a leak; a person cannot simply replace a finger. A local template can therefore reduce exposure to a cloud breach without making the underlying biometric characteristic secret or harmless.
The reviewed product pages do not establish whether either named lock retains a raw fingerprint image, exactly how its template is generated, whether templates can be exported, or whether backups exist. Do not infer those properties from the word “template,” “encrypted,” or “local” alone.
Local storage, cloud storage and what each claim means
Local storage
With local storage, enrollment data and matching are intended to remain in the lock or an associated local device. That can remove a cloud account and internet service from the biometric data path. It does not eliminate risks from someone who obtains the lock, accesses its internal memory, compromises a paired phone, abuses an administrator account, or exploits firmware.
Cloud or central storage
If a lock sends biometric information to a remote service, you must evaluate the service’s retention, access controls, breach response, account recovery and deletion process in addition to the hardware. A cloud connection may support useful features, but it creates another place where data could be exposed or retained.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and hubs
Connectivity is not a security verdict by itself. Bluetooth-only operation can reduce internet exposure, while a Wi-Fi or hub-connected model may provide remote alerts and management. Ask whether connectivity is used only for commands and settings or also for enrollment, matching, diagnostics or backup. The answer can differ by firmware version and operating mode.
What current manufacturer disclosures say
| Model | Published claim | What the claim establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Smart Lock U100 | Aqara says up to 50 fingerprints are stored locally and describes end-to-end encryption using 128-bit AES. It also claims 98.6% accuracy; the product page does not state a year for that figure. | The manufacturer presents local storage, a stated encryption design and a stated enrollment capacity for this model. | Those are manufacturer claims, not an independent security or accuracy test. The reviewed material does not document template format, exportability, deletion completeness, physical extraction resistance or spoofing performance. |
| Wyze Lock Bolt | Wyze says codes, schedules and fingerprint data are stored locally in the lock. It describes the lock as Bluetooth-only with no cloud connection. | The manufacturer says the listed data stays in the lock and that the product has no cloud connection. | The support article is not an independent assessment and does not, by itself, prove encryption strength, secure reset, resistance to invasive access or presentation-attack detection. |
Neither disclosure supports a cross-brand ranking. No independent study or cross-model security statistic was established for these examples. The 98.6% figure applies only to the U100 as a manufacturer-stated specification; it is not an independently verified result and should not be generalized to other locks.
How to judge a lock before you buy or install it
1. Identify the exact data path
- Find the product’s support page and installation or privacy documentation for the exact model and hardware revision.
- Look for an explicit statement about where enrollment and matching occur: lock, keypad, hub, phone or cloud service.
- Check whether the maker says a raw image, template or other derived representation is retained.
- Determine whether an internet account is required for enrollment, everyday unlocking, firmware updates or recovery.
2. Check protection details without overreading marketing language
- Record the encryption or secure-storage controls the maker actually documents, including where they apply.
- Look for secure boot, signed firmware, protected administrative credentials and a documented update process.
- Ask whether biometric records are exportable, synchronized to another device or included in backups.
- Separate a capacity number, such as 50 enrolled fingers, from a security result. More capacity does not mean stronger protection.
3. Find the deletion and reset procedure
You should be able to remove one person’s enrollment without deleting every other user, and you should know what a factory reset does. Check the exact button sequence or app path, whether an administrator credential is required, and whether deletion is confirmed on the lock itself. Then look for statements about data remaining after a reset, device transfer, account removal or replacement of the owner’s phone.

And the spindle bar is in the vertical position. The thumb turn adjustment arrow points to the center dot and the 'UP' sign, then the arrow is inserted upward on the mounting, you can use a little force to get the rear lock completely in.
4. Evaluate non-biometric access
Keep a fallback that does not depend on the fingerprint reader. Depending on the model, that may be a mechanical key, a PIN, a phone credential or an emergency power method. Verify how an owner revokes a lost phone, changes a compromised code and grants or removes another user. A fallback can improve availability, but a weak or shared PIN can become the easiest attack path.
5. Look for independent evidence
Manufacturer pages can describe intended design, but they do not substitute for an independent penetration test, locksmith assessment or security advisory. Search for a report that names the exact model and firmware, explains the test method and distinguishes a demonstrated vulnerability from a theoretical concern. If no such report exists, treat the evidence as limited rather than assuming either safety or failure.
What can happen to stored fingerprints after enrollment?
Normal unlocking
In a local design, the lock normally retains a reference and compares a fresh scan against it. A successful comparison triggers the lock mechanism, while a failed comparison should leave the lock secured and may generate a local event or app notification. The sources reviewed do not establish the precise event logs, retry limits or lockout behavior of the two examples, so those settings must be checked in each manual.
Adding or removing a user
Enrollment is usually an administrator action. Before enrolling anyone, confirm which account or physical control has authority, whether the new record receives a name or schedule, and whether the lock communicates with an app during the process. When someone moves out, remove that person’s fingerprint and any associated code or phone credential; deleting only the biometric record may leave another active route.

Factory reset or transfer
A reset may clear active users, but “reset” is not a universal promise about every byte of memory or every cloud account. Ask whether the procedure is a logical wipe, whether an owner must first unlink the lock, and whether a subsequent owner can recover old records. If documentation is silent, do not assume that handing over a reset lock removes all historical data.
Loss, theft or physical access
A thief who steals a locked device may have opportunities unavailable to a remote attacker, including attempts to open the housing, read memory or manipulate sensors. Local storage reduces the value of a stolen cloud password but does not prove that the hardware is tamper-resistant. A documented secure element, non-exportable template and independent physical-security test would be stronger evidence than a generic local-storage claim; the reviewed pages do not provide that evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fingerprint spoofing and presentation attacks
A fingerprint reader must distinguish a genuine finger from an artificial presentation. NIST recommends presentation-attack detection for fingerprint modalities in the digital-identity contexts covered by SP 800-63B-4. Consumer lock documentation may use terms such as “liveness,” but you need to know what was tested, under which conditions and whether the result came from an independent laboratory.

Do not treat a high recognition-accuracy number as an anti-spoofing score. Accuracy describes matching performance under a stated test setup; it does not show how the reader responds to copied or fabricated presentations. Aqara’s 98.6% statement is therefore not evidence of spoof resistance.

Security weaknesses outside the fingerprint sensor
- Account recovery: An attacker who takes over the owner’s account may add a code or phone credential even if the biometric template remains local.
- Weak shared codes: A PIN written near the door or reused across services can defeat a strong reader.
- Outdated firmware: Unpatched software can expose Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, hub or app functions. Check how updates are authenticated and delivered.
- Lost phones and accessories: Revoke paired devices and temporary credentials promptly.
- Power failure: Confirm battery warnings, emergency power and mechanical-key procedures before relying on the lock.
- Installation: A lock mounted incorrectly, with an exposed interior or poorly protected strike, can be bypassed without attacking biometrics.
A practical privacy and security checklist
- Write down the exact model, hardware revision and firmware version.
- Mark whether matching is local, central or unclear.
- Record every connected component: phone app, hub, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cloud account.
- Find the manufacturer’s statements about encryption, template protection, export and backup.
- Test enrollment and removal with a spare authorized finger before giving access to others.
- Perform the documented reset and transfer process on a non-critical test installation if possible, then verify that old users cannot unlock it.
- Enable strong administrator authentication and use unique, non-obvious access codes.
- Set a maintenance reminder for battery replacement, firmware review and removal of former users.
- Keep a reliable fallback key or credential and store emergency instructions securely.
- Search for independent reports naming the exact model; record the test date and firmware scope.
How NIST guidance helps without becoming a lock certification
SP 800-63B-4 is designed for digital identity systems, not as a consumer smart-lock approval label. Its useful principles are that biometrics require sensitive-data protection, local and central comparison have different privacy implications, and fingerprint systems should address presentation attacks. SP 800-63A adds a transparency benchmark: people should receive clear information about collection, storage, protection and removal in the identity-proofing services it covers.
FIPS 201-3 provides another government example by describing on-card biometric comparison and, for specified templates, non-exportability. That illustrates a privacy-oriented design property. It is not evidence that a residential lock uses an on-card comparison architecture or meets the federal standard.
Bottom line for homeowners
A fingerprint lock is a reasonable convenience choice when its documentation clearly identifies local or central processing, explains protection and deletion, limits unnecessary connectivity and provides a dependable fallback. Local storage, as claimed for the Aqara Smart Lock U100 and Wyze Lock Bolt, is a meaningful privacy advantage over an undisclosed cloud path, but it is only one part of the threat model. Because biometric characteristics are not secrets, choose a model and operating practice that also protect accounts, codes, firmware, physical hardware and the ability to remove access.
