An official restaurant app can reduce what you effectively pay when a local pickup offer or loyalty reward applies. The regular menu price for the same pickup order is not proven to be consistently lower than the counter price. Delivery is a different calculation: menu prices may be higher and fees are added.
To find the cheapest option, compare the same items at the same restaurant, apply only offers you can use, and judge the final checkout total rather than a banner price.
What “cheaper in the app” actually means
People often use “the app” to describe three different transactions:

- Counter ordering: you buy directly inside the restaurant.
- Official-app pickup: you order through the chain’s own app and collect the food at a chosen location.
- Delivery: you order for delivery through an official app or a delivery marketplace.
Those channels can have different menus, promotions, fees and eligibility rules. A lower advertised item price does not automatically make an order cheaper after service charges, delivery fees, tax, small-order fees or an unavailable coupon are included.
For official-app pickup versus the counter, the available evidence does not establish a nationwide or chain-wide rule. There is no current broad matched-price study showing that ordinary pickup menu prices are always lower or always higher than restaurant prices. Prices can be set locally, so the answer may change from one location to the next.

When an official app can save money
App-only coupons and local promotions
Chains can make a coupon available only in their app, for a particular restaurant, time window, customer segment or ordering channel. If the coupon applies to pickup and you were going to buy the qualifying items anyway, your effective cost is lower. The discount may be a fixed amount, a bundle price, a percentage reduction or a free add-on.
Read the conditions before assuming the headline offer applies. Common restrictions include a minimum purchase, one use per account, a specific size or product, an expiration time, a participating location and a requirement to order through pickup rather than at the counter. An offer that appears on the home screen but disappears after you select a restaurant is not a saving for that order.

Loyalty points and member rewards
Rewards reduce effective cost rather than necessarily changing the posted menu price. McDonald’s U.S. says eligible purchases made through its app can earn MyMcDonald’s Rewards points. Points have value only if you can redeem them under the program’s rules, and earning points does not make the item’s displayed price lower at checkout. Check whether the purchase qualifies, whether points can be combined with a coupon and whether a reward is limited to pickup or another channel.

Bundles that are not available everywhere
A chain may publish a lower-priced menu or meal in one channel and exclude another. McDonald’s U.S., for example, announced its McValue program with an Under $3 menu and a $4 Breakfast Meal Deal, and stated that those offers were not valid for delivery. That illustrates why you must check channel eligibility instead of assuming a promotion follows you from pickup to delivery. Menu names, prices and terms are time-sensitive; open the current offer at your selected location before ordering.
Why delivery often costs more
Official disclosures about higher delivery prices
McDonald’s USA’s delivery FAQ says: “The fees associated with delivery can vary, and prices for items ordered via delivery may be higher than at restaurants.” The statement concerns delivery, not a claim that official-app pickup costs more than ordering at the counter. Burger King’s U.S. offer terms likewise state, “Prices may be higher than at restaurant,” and add that value-menu prices may be higher in some markets. These are disclosures that permit variation, not proof that every order at every location carries a markup.
McDonald’s Australia gives a location-specific example: its restaurants set prices that vary by location, and delivery prices are higher than pickup prices. That is an Australia-specific statement and should not be treated as evidence of a uniform U.S. price difference.

Fees are separate from menu prices
A delivery checkout can add a delivery fee, service or platform fee, a small-order fee, a busy-period charge or a minimum-order requirement. Taxes may be calculated on the adjusted subtotal and can vary by jurisdiction. Some memberships or promotions waive one fee but not others. Compare the complete amount shown immediately before payment, including tip if you are deciding the total household cost.
The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 notice on online food-delivery fees references media reports saying that meal prices on delivery platforms can be over 20% higher than restaurant prices before platform fees. The “over 20%” figure belongs to those cited media reports; it is not a nationwide FTC experiment or a guarantee for every chain, location or order. What published price comparisons show—and do not show
Consumer Reports’ 2020 comparison looked at 46 food items for which app and restaurant-website prices could be compared. It found:

Those counts came from a small, historical comparison of third-party delivery apps. It was not a current fast-food-only survey and did not measure official-chain-app pickup against counter prices. It therefore cannot be used as a present-day average or as proof that delivery is always more expensive. The original article is available from Consumer Reports.
How to compare an app order with the counter price
Use one location and one identical order. Changing the restaurant, size or side while comparing channels can hide the real difference.
- Choose the exact restaurant. In the official app, enter your address or select the location you would visit. Confirm that the address, hours and menu belong to that restaurant, not a nearby branch.
- Set the channel to pickup. Select pickup and the intended order time. Some restaurants show different availability or prices after a time is chosen.
- Add identical items. Match the sandwich, size, customization, side, drink and quantity you would request at the counter. Record the item subtotal before offers.
- Check the restaurant’s current offers. Open the offer details and read the location, time, product, minimum-spend and channel restrictions. Apply only a deal you are eligible to use.
- Check rewards separately. Note points earned or a reward redeemed, but do not subtract a reward you cannot use on this order. If points are earned for a future visit, treat them as a potential benefit rather than an instant price cut.
- Ask for the counter total. Use the posted menu or ask staff for the price of the same items at that location. A chain’s national menu page may not reflect local pricing.
- Compare final pickup amounts. Include taxes and any app fee. If the counter price is not available online, the restaurant’s current register total is the reliable comparison for that visit.
- Recheck before paying. Confirm that the selected offer is still applied, the pickup location has not changed and the final total is the amount you intend to pay.
How to compare delivery fairly
- Keep the same restaurant and the same items used in your pickup comparison.
- Switch the official app or marketplace to delivery and confirm the delivery address.
- Look for changed item prices before adding fees. Delivery menus can have different prices from pickup menus.
- List every charge shown at checkout: delivery, service or platform, small-order, regulatory or other listed fees, plus tax.
- Check whether a coupon or loyalty reward is valid for delivery. A pickup-only deal cannot be counted as delivery savings.
- Compare the delivery checkout total with the counter or pickup total for the same food. Add a tip if your decision is about the full cost of receiving the meal.

Common mistakes that make a “cheap” app order expensive
Comparing a coupon with a regular counter order
A $2-off banner is not a fair comparison if the app requires a $10 minimum or if you would not have bought the extra item needed to qualify. Compare the complete basket you actually want.
Using a national price as a local price
Restaurant operators can set prices by market. The price shown for one branch may not apply to another branch across town. Always select the location before recording a number.
Confusing points with an immediate discount
Points earned today may be redeemable only later, may expire or may require a threshold. Record the posted total and the reward value separately so the comparison remains transparent.

Terms can exclude delivery, breakfast hours, certain products or specific stores. McDonald’s U.S. explicitly excluded its cited Under $3 menu and $4 Breakfast Meal Deal from delivery. Burger King’s terms warn that prices may be higher than at the restaurant and that value-menu prices may be higher in some markets. Read the current terms linked from the offer rather than relying on a screenshot or social-media post.
Stopping at the item subtotal
Delivery fees and higher delivery menu prices appear at different stages of the order. The only dependable figure for a channel comparison is the final checkout amount for the same basket.
What you can conclude before opening an app
- Pickup: You may save through an eligible local deal or by redeeming a reward, but regular official-app pickup prices have no established universal advantage over the counter.
- Delivery: Expect the possibility of higher item prices and additional fees; verify the checkout total.
- Location: Prices and participation can vary by restaurant and market.
- Evidence: The 2020 Consumer Reports sample found 25 of 46 comparable delivery-app items at the same price, 14 higher and 7 lower, but its age and scope prevent a current fast-food pickup conclusion.
For current prices, use the official app to select the exact restaurant, build the same order, apply an offer only when its terms fit, and compare the final pickup or delivery total with the restaurant’s counter price. That process answers your local question without assuming that a national slogan or a delivery marketplace price applies everywhere.
