Insects may contribute useful nutrients, yet current human studies do not establish broad health benefits beyond eating them as a food. Check the exact product’s nutrition, ingredient, processing, and allergen information—especially if you have a shellfish allergy.
Are edible insects nutritious?
Many edible insects provide protein, fat, minerals, and some vitamins. The strongest general evidence comes from food-composition reviews, not from a universal nutrient database for every insect product. A dried whole cricket, a boiled larva, and a baked snack made with insect powder are different foods, even when they come from the same species.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that compiled analyses found many edible insects containing minerals such as copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. Reported vitamins include riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and biotin; folic acid was found in some cases. Those findings describe patterns across studies, not a guaranteed amount in a particular serving.
What determines an insect’s nutrient profile?
- Species: Nutrient composition differs between crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers, ants, beetles, and other species.
- Developmental stage: Larvae, nymphs, and adults can have different proportions of protein, fat, and minerals.
- Feed and habitat: What an insect eats and the conditions in which it is raised affect its composition. Residual substances from feed can also matter for allergen assessment.
- Preparation: Drying, boiling, frying, roasting, and incorporation into a flour or bar change the food’s water content and therefore the apparent nutrient concentration per 100 grams.
- Analytical method: Studies do not always measure nutrients in the same way, limiting direct comparisons.
Because of these variables, a number quoted for one insect should not be presented as representative of all edible insects. The most useful comparison is between the nutrition panels of the actual products you would eat.

How much protein do crickets have?
There is no scientifically responsible single protein-per-serving figure for “crickets” as a category. A protein number needs a named species, life stage, fresh- or dry-weight basis, preparation method, serving size, and analytical method. Dry products usually appear more protein-dense than fresh insects because water has been removed, while frying or adding other ingredients changes the final food.
There is another complication: the exoskeleton contains chitin. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) notes that protein can be overestimated when chitin is present in the calculation. A label’s protein figure therefore does not automatically tell you how much digestible protein you will obtain, and figures from two studies may not be directly comparable if they use different methods.
How to interpret a cricket or insect-protein label
- Identify the food form. Determine whether the panel describes whole insects, a defatted or dried powder, a bar, a cracker, or another recipe.
- Check the serving basis. Compare servings of equal weight, and note whether the manufacturer reports values per serving or per 100 grams.
- Read the ingredient list. Insect powder may be one ingredient among grains, sweeteners, oils, or flavorings. The product’s protein is not necessarily all from insects.
- Look for processing details. Drying, cooking, roasting, and milling affect water content and nutrient concentration.
- Use the stated species and product name. Do not transfer a number from a study of one species or life stage to a different product.
Human research so far does not show that every insect product provides protein equivalent in quantity or quality to meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or legumes. It does show that insect protein can raise post-meal amino-acid concentrations, with important qualifications discussed below.

What vitamins and minerals are in edible insects?
FAO’s review identifies several micronutrients in analyses of edible insects, but the amounts vary enough that a category-wide vitamin table would be misleading. The following summary describes nutrients that have been reported, not guaranteed contents of every package.
| Nutrient group | What the evidence supports | What a reader should check |
|---|---|---|
| Minerals | Many analyzed insects supplied minerals including copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. | The exact species, life stage, processing method, serving size, and label value. |
| B vitamins and related vitamins | Reported findings include riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and biotin; folic acid was reported in some cases. | Whether the finished product retains these nutrients and declares them on its nutrition panel. |
| Protein | Many insects provide protein, but estimates can be affected by chitin and differing laboratory methods. | The product’s stated protein, basis of measurement, ingredients, and serving size. |
| Fat | Edible insects can provide fat, with composition varying by species, feed, life stage, and processing. | Total fat and the type of fat listed for that specific food. |
“Contains iron” or “contains vitamin B” is not the same as proving that an insect snack will correct a deficiency. Nutritional contribution depends on the amount eaten and the rest of the diet. If you need a particular nutrient for a medical reason, use a labeled food or supplement whose contents are established for that purpose and discuss treatment with a qualified professional.
Do insect proteins improve human health?
Evidence for health outcomes is still limited. A 2023 systematic review, Effects of Insect Consumption on Human Health: A Systematic Review of Human Studies, screened 1,063 references and included nine randomized controlled trials plus five allergenicity studies. The screening number is a review-search count, not a count of clinical trials and not proof that insects produce health benefits.

| Outcome studied | What the review reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Post-meal amino acids | Amino-acid levels rose after participants consumed insect protein. | This shows absorption and a physiological response, not a unique health advantage. |
| Essential-amino-acid response | Area-under-the-curve results did not significantly differ from other protein sources; peaks tended to be lower and later with insect protein. | Results were broadly comparable in the studied conditions, but they do not establish equivalence for every product. |
| Muscle protein synthesis | No significant difference was found between insect protein and comparator proteins. | The available trials do not demonstrate superior muscle-building effects. |
| Glucose and insulin | No glucose difference was found; insulin was lower after insect-based products in the reviewed evidence. | This is a limited research finding, not advice to use insects to manage diabetes. |
| Inflammation and microbiota | Results were inconclusive. | No established anti-inflammatory or gut-health claim follows. |
| Appetite regulation | No significant appetite-regulation effects were demonstrated. | Insects should not be marketed as a proven weight-management treatment. |
The review’s authors called for more research. Human trials were small and examined particular products and conditions, so their findings cannot support claims that edible insects prevent disease, improve gut health, or are automatically healthier than familiar protein foods.

Are edible insects safe to eat?
Safety depends on the production chain, not simply on whether an insect is edible in principle. EFSA identifies the species, feed substrate, harvest stage, production method, and processing as relevant factors. Contamination and microbial hazards can change when insects are raised on different substrates or sold in different forms.
EFSA’s 2015 risk profile concluded that, when currently permitted feed materials are used, microbiological hazards in non-processed insects are expected to be comparable to those in other non-processed animal protein sources. That conclusion is conditional: it does not approve every species, farm, processing method, or product, and it does not mean that all insect foods are safe regardless of handling.

Processing can reduce some hazards, but it can also create a different product with a different shelf life and composition. Follow the package’s storage and preparation directions, keep the food in its stated conditions, and do not assume that a dried or powdered product has the same handling requirements as a cooked meal.
What EFSA says about the complexity of insect foods
EFSA coordinator Ermolaos Ververis, a chemist and food scientist identified by EFSA, said: “Insects are complex organisms, which makes characterising the composition of insect-derived food products a challenge. Understanding their microbiology is paramount, considering also that the entire insect is consumed.” The statement explains why safety and nutrition assessments must consider the complete production and processing system.

Can edible insects cause an allergic reaction?
Yes. Insect proteins can cause allergy, and cross-reactivity is an important concern. EFSA’s novel-food assessment explains that allergenicity work considers sensitivity to insect proteins, cross-reactivity with related allergens, and residual allergens from feed, such as gluten.

The UK Food Standards Agency’s 2022 summary reports evidence concerning cross-reactivity between shellfish and insects. This does not mean that every person with a shellfish allergy will react to every insect product. It does mean that people with shellfish allergy should not treat edible insects as automatically unrelated or safe.
- Read the product’s allergen declaration and precautionary statements every time, especially when changing brands or flavors.
- Check whether the product is made in a facility that handles shellfish, crustaceans, mollusks, or other allergens.
- If you have a shellfish or insect allergy, or have had a severe food reaction, ask an allergist or another qualified clinician before trying an insect food.
- Stop eating the product and seek urgent medical help for signs of a severe reaction, such as trouble breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
How should you compare insects with meat, fish, or plant proteins?
“More nutritious” is not a useful category-wide verdict. Compare the foods you would actually eat, using the same serving basis and the nutrients relevant to your diet. A cricket powder may have a high protein value by weight because it is dry, while a cooked legume contains substantial water; comparing their numbers without adjusting for form can create a false impression.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are both foods measured fresh or dry? | Water removal can greatly change nutrients per 100 grams. |
| Are the servings equal in weight? | A small serving of powder and a large serving of a cooked food are not equivalent portions. |
| What are the ingredients? | A snack may contain sugar, oil, grains, or salt in addition to insects. |
| How was protein measured? | Chitin and laboratory methodology can affect the reported estimate. |
| Which micronutrients are actually listed? | Reported nutrients in a species review are not a guarantee for a finished product. |
| What are the allergen and processing details? | Safety and suitability depend on the product’s supply chain and your own sensitivities. |
For everyday eating, the sensible question is whether a particular insect food fits your nutritional needs, preferences, budget, and allergy risk—not whether all insects beat all other protein sources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical checklist before buying an insect food
- Choose a clearly identified product. The package should name the insect or insect-derived ingredient and state the food form.
- Review the nutrition panel. Note serving size, protein, total fat, and any declared vitamins or minerals.
- Read the full ingredient and allergen information. Look for shellfish warnings, shared-facility statements, and possible feed-related allergens.
- Check storage and preparation instructions. Follow the product’s directions rather than applying assumptions from another insect food.
- Consider your reason for eating it. If you need a specific amount of protein or a nutrient for a medical condition, select foods with verified values and obtain professional advice.
- Compare like with like. Match serving size, fresh or dry basis, and preparation method before comparing it with meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or legumes.
The bottom line on edible-insect nutrition
Edible insects can be legitimate sources of protein, fat, minerals, and selected vitamins. Their composition is highly variable, protein estimates can be affected by chitin and testing methods, and human evidence has not established broad health advantages. Treat each product as a specific food: inspect its label, understand how it was produced and processed, and take shellfish or other allergy risks seriously.
