Are Diamond-Coated Planar Headphones Worth Buying? What the Driver Material Means

Not on the coating claim alone. The FiiO FT15 is a current example of a planar magnetic headphone reported to use a diamond-coated diaphragm, but launch coverage describes a design goal—not proof that it sounds better or is worth its launch price. Consider it only on the strength of the complete headphone: its measured and independently reviewed performance, comfort, use case and price.

What diamond coating is supposed to do

A headphone diaphragm moves in response to an electrical signal. Its material and construction influence how it flexes and how it behaves across frequencies. FiiO’s stated rationale for the FT15’s coating, as reported at launch, is to increase rigidity while balancing stiffness and lightness. That is a mechanical design aim, not a listening result.

Coatings can change a diaphragm’s local mass, stiffness and damping. HIFIMAN’s explanation of its own nanometer-scale diaphragm technology notes that material and geometry can reshape resonances and frequency response. The effect in any headphone depends on the coating and substrate together, the diaphragm’s shape and thickness, the magnet system, acoustic loading and final tuning. HIFIMAN’s general explanation does not verify how the FT15 is implemented or how it performs.

So a diamond coating does not inherently mean more detail, greater accuracy or better sound. Those outcomes have to be judged from the finished headphone, using credible measurements and listening evaluations.

The current planar example: FiiO FT15

What Hi-Fi’s launch report, published 18 September 2026, describes the FT15 as an open-back planar magnetic headphone with 101 mm drivers and a diamond coating across the diaphragm. It also reports contoured high-strength magnets, black walnut earcups, a carbon-fibre headband, a monocrystalline copper cable and a 4.4 mm balanced connection, with 6.35 mm and XLR-4 adapters. These are launch details, not independently validated performance findings. What Hi-Fi’s FT15 launch report

TechRadar’s report from the same date lists a claimed 800 nm diaphragm thickness, described as 86.7% thinner than the FT5’s diaphragm, plus a weight of 425 g, sensitivity of 95 dB/mW and impedance of 24 ohms. Treat these as figures reported by TechRadar, not independent measurements. The publication said the FT15 needed testing before its performance could be judged. TechRadar’s FT15 report

  • The Headband: The light weight, ergonomically accurate offers maximum comfort for hours of listening pleasure. The exterior is refined matte black material, and the interior features high-grade memory foam for the most comfortable fit and elasticity. The headphone’s structural design supports overall durability that retains its comfortable fit for years of enjoyment.
  • The Cable: HIFIMAN’s new 3.5mm sockets are similar to those found on most common audio devices. The supplied 3.5mm cable is user changeable and replaceable.

What Hi-Fi reported launch pricing of £499 / $500 / €500. Those are launch-market figures, not confirmation of current street price or availability in any particular country. The available reports do not establish independent FT15 measurements or a comparative listening verdict, so they cannot settle whether it is good value.

How to decide whether it is worth buying

Compare the FT15 with alternatives in the same price range as complete headphones, rather than treating driver material as a shortcut to sound quality. Give the most weight to evidence about the following:

  • Precision Magnetic Control : 44 N50 neodymium magnets ensure fast transient response. Acoustically transparent open-back grille minimizes resonance for expansive, holographic soundstage with studio-grade accuracy
  • Measured performance: Look for credible, repeatable frequency-response and distortion measurements. A material description cannot substitute for these.
  • Listening impressions: Seek independent reviews that describe tonal balance and listening preferences, ideally alongside measurements. A preference for one sound is not proof that one driver material is universally superior.
  • Fit and use: The FT15 is reported as open-back. Consider whether that suits your listening environment, and assess comfort and fit rather than assuming the reported weight will feel the same for every listener.
  • Source compatibility: TechRadar reports 95 dB/mW sensitivity and 24 ohm impedance. Those specifications alone do not establish that you need a separate amplifier; check reliable guidance or testing for the headphone and your intended source before buying equipment.
  • Price and support: Compare the actual price and availability in your market, along with warranty and support. The reported launch price may not match today’s offer.
  • Evidence for the material claim: Ask whether the coating is accompanied by reproducible performance evidence. The claim that a material may influence diaphragm behavior is not evidence that it delivers a benefit you will hear.

“Diamond” does not mean the same construction everywhere

The term appears in products with different driver types and structures, so it is important not to group them together as equivalent planar headphones:

  • FiiO FT15: Reported as a planar magnetic headphone with a diamond coating across its diaphragm.
  • Final Audio DX10000CL: Final describes a closed-back headphone with a diamond dome. It is not the FT15’s planar design. Final’s DX10000CL product page
  • JVC HA-FD01: JVC describes an in-ear dynamic driver with a layered diaphragm; its PEN dome area has a diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating. DLC is not interchangeable with a full diamond coating, and the HA-FD01 is not a planar headphone. JVC’s HA-FD01 product page

Verdict: treat the coating as one design choice

The FT15 makes diamond-coated planar headphones a real product category to consider, but the reports available here do not show that its coating produces better sound or justifies its launch price. Buy only if independent performance evidence, comfort, source compatibility and the price make sense for you—not because “diamond-coated” sounds like a guarantee.
