Decorative LED lights generally use far less electricity than incandescent strings, but that efficiency is not permission to leave them unattended. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports that LED holiday strands consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent strands. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) still advise switching off all light strings and decorations before sleeping or leaving home.
Use a strand tested by a recognized safety laboratory, rated for its location, and free of damaged sockets, wiring or connections. For outdoor displays, use an outdoor-rated product on a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI)-protected circuit.

How energy-efficient are decorative LED lights?
LED holiday strands are substantially more efficient than comparable incandescent strands. DOE states that LED holiday strands consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent holiday strands. That is a comparison of holiday light strands, not a guarantee for every decorative LED product: a string’s actual wattage depends on its design, number of lamps and controls.

What will decorative lights cost to run?
The DOE figures provide a useful scale, but your bill depends on three variables: the string’s power draw, how long it operates and your electricity rate. Use the wattage printed on the product or its instructions.
- Convert power to kilowatts by dividing watts by 1,000.
- Multiply kilowatts by the number of operating hours to obtain kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Multiply kWh by your local price per kWh.
For example, a 20-watt string operated for six hours uses 0.020 × 6 = 0.12 kWh per day. At an electricity rate of $0.20 per kWh, that day costs $0.024. This is a calculation method, not a rate assumption; use your utility’s current tariff and the exact wattage of your strand. Timers or smart plugs can reduce hours of operation, but they do not change whether a damaged or incorrectly rated string is safe.
Does lower energy use make LED lights safe to leave on overnight?
No. Energy efficiency and unattended-use safety are separate questions. CPSC’s 1998 holiday safety release says: “Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.” NFPA’s 2025 Winter Holiday Safety sheet gives the same practical instruction: “Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.”

Those are conservative, general recommendations. They do not mean every LED string has the same failure probability, and they do not establish that a particular product is safe to run while nobody is present. An LED strand can still have damaged insulation, a loose connection, a defective control box or an installation that does not match its location rating. Switch it off before sleeping or leaving, even when it draws very little power.
How to choose a safer decorative LED string
Look for recognized safety testing
CPSC advises: “Whether indoors or outside, use only decorative light strands that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory.” Follow the product instructions and look for the laboratory mark or documentation identified by the seller or manufacturer. A safety mark does not make a damaged product safe; discontinue use if the set is compromised.
Inspect every set before installation
Check new and previously stored strands before plugging them in. CPSC specifically calls out:

- Broken or cracked lamp sockets
- Frayed, cut or bare wires
- Loose connections
Discard a set with any of these conditions rather than taping, splicing or improvising a repair. Damage can expose users to shock or create a short circuit. Examine the plug, in-line controller and connectors as well as the visible wire between lamps.

Understand construction features for covered seasonal products
CPSC guidance for covered 120-volt, plug-connected temporary-use seasonal and decorative products identifies three relevant characteristics: minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief and overcurrent protection. The guidance states that a product lacking any one of these characteristics presents a risk of electrical shock or fire. These characteristics are selection and construction considerations, not a substitute for following the instructions or removing a damaged strand from service.
Indoor and outdoor use require different checks
Indoor installations
Use a strand labeled for indoor use in a dry indoor location and keep the wiring arranged as the instructions specify. Do not assume that a product intended for a covered porch, damp area or exterior wall is equivalent to an indoor-only set. Keep decorations away from heat sources and do not place wiring where it can be pinched, cut or pulled loose.

Outdoor installations
Outdoor lights should carry labeling confirming outdoor suitability. CPSC advises connecting outdoor electric lights and decorations to GFCI-protected circuits. A GFCI can interrupt power when it detects a ground-fault condition, but it cannot correct a cut cord, cracked socket or product that is not rated for outdoor exposure.
Follow the strand’s instructions for connectors, end-to-end connections and weather protection. If the label does not clearly identify the product as suitable for the planned outdoor location, do not use it there.

- Read the label and instructions. Confirm the voltage, intended location and any limits on connecting strands.
- Inspect before each season. Look for the socket, wire and connection damage listed by CPSC; discard defective sets.
- Verify the power source. For outdoor displays, use a GFCI-protected circuit as CPSC recommends.
- Install without damaging the cord. Avoid pinching, pulling or routing it through places that can abrade the insulation.
- Set an operating schedule. Use a timer if useful, but schedule an automatic shutoff before bedtime and whenever the home will be empty.
- Switch off manually when leaving. Do not rely on low wattage, a safety mark or a timer as proof that an unattended strand is safe.
What to do when a strand develops a problem
A socket or wire is cracked, frayed or exposed
Unplug the set and discard it. Do not keep using it after a temporary tape repair or attempt a homemade splice. The CPSC inspection advice applies to old and new sets alike.

A connector is loose
Disconnect power, inspect the connection and follow the manufacturer’s specified connection method. If it remains loose, damaged or unexplained by the instructions, replace the strand rather than forcing the parts together.
The product’s location rating is unclear
Do not install it outdoors or in a damp location until the labeling or instructions confirm suitability. Use an explicitly outdoor-rated set for an exterior display and connect it to GFCI protection.
The circuit protection trips
Turn off and unplug the decoration. Do not repeatedly reset the protection while the strand remains connected. Inspect for damage and consult the product instructions; a persistent trip is a reason to stop using the set and have the installation evaluated.
How decorative-light fire statistics should be interpreted
NFPA’s 2025 holiday material reports that more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles and that half of decoration fires occur because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. These figures concern home decoration fires overall, not LED light strings specifically. They support keeping every decoration away from heat and maintaining an off-before-bed routine, but they do not quantify a unique fire rate for decorative LEDs. No current figure in the cited guidance isolates fires caused by decorative LED strings.
LED versus incandescent: a practical decision framework

Bottom line for everyday use
Decorative LEDs are an efficient replacement for incandescent holiday strands: DOE’s comparison found 70 percent lower energy use, and its 2015 example showed a much lower operating cost. That benefit is real but limited to electricity consumption. It does not remove hazards from damaged wiring, unsuitable installation or unattended operation.
Choose a safety-tested, correctly rated strand; inspect it and discard defects; use GFCI protection outdoors; keep decorations away from heat; and switch every light string off before bed or before leaving home. Those steps address both parts of the question—lower energy use and responsible operation—without treating efficiency as a safety guarantee.
