The answer depends on the exact glass, how its decoration was applied, and the maker’s care instructions. If the cup is labeled dishwasher-safe, use the specified gentle cycle and loading method. If it says hand-wash only, says it is not dishwasher-safe, or has no reliable instructions, wash it by hand; do not infer safety from appearance alone.
Start with the cup’s own care instructions
There is no universal rule for every decorated glass. Two cups that look identical can have different coatings, firing processes, paints, or metallic details, and their manufacturers may test them differently. Check the base, packaging, product listing, and the maker’s official care page for the exact model before putting it in a machine.

What each label means
| Wording or status | What to do | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher-safe | Follow the maker’s cycle, temperature, rack, and spacing instructions. | The approval applies to that identified product under stated conditions. |
| Hand-wash only | Wash individually by hand. | Machine heat, spray pressure, detergent, or contact with other dishes may damage the glass or decoration. |
| Not dishwasher-safe | Never use a dishwasher for that item. | This is an explicit prohibition, even if another product with similar decoration is machine-safe. |
| No instructions or an unreadable label | Choose hand-washing. | RIEDEL advises hand-washing items supplied without care instructions. |
| Conflicting information | Use the more restrictive instruction and ask the maker for clarification. | A generic listing, box, or retailer description may not match the exact model or production run. |
Marimekko specifically tells customers to check product care instructions before using a dishwasher. RIEDEL distinguishes products marked dishwasher-safe from those marked hand-wash-only or not dishwasher-safe, and recommends hand-washing when instructions are absent. Treat those as product-specific directions, not as a general standard for all decorative glass.

Why decoration changes the risk
Glass itself may tolerate a dishwasher while a finish applied to its surface does not. Hot water, alkaline detergent, repeated spray, drying heat, and contact with racks can affect paint, metallic details, printed patterns, or an applied coating. The decoration can also make a cup more vulnerable to scratching because the finished area may sit above the glass or have a different surface hardness.

Gold, platinum, and metallic rims
Metallic decoration deserves the most conservative treatment. Crystalex states: “Decorated products with gold, platinum or paint are not dishwasher safe.” La Rochère likewise says its gold-etched-rim products should be hand-washed to preserve the rim. Those instructions apply to the named manufacturers’ products; they do not prove that every gold-looking rim is made the same way. A maker that has tested a particular metallic design may permit machine washing, so read the exact label rather than relying on the color or shine.
Painted and printed designs
Crystalex’s general warning covers painted decoration, but it notes exceptions for some spray-on organic paints and screen-printed décor. An exception on one product line does not transfer to another line, even within the same company. If the care page does not identify the decoration as dishwasher-safe, keep the cup out of the machine.
Etching, applied color, and special finishes
Etched patterns can be cut into the glass or combined with paint, ink, or a metallic layer. Colored glass may be integral to the material, while an applied color sits on the surface. You cannot reliably distinguish these constructions by sight. Use the maker’s model-specific instruction, especially when the pattern is concentrated around the rim where utensils and rack tines can strike it.
How to verify an unidentified cup
- Record identifying details. Photograph the base and any logo, model number, capacity marking, or country-of-origin text. Note whether the design is painted, printed, etched, metallic, or textured.
- Check every physical source. Look at the underside, original packaging, instruction leaflet, purchase receipt, and the retailer’s listing. Search the manufacturer’s care page using the model name, not only a description such as “gold-rim glass.”
- Compare the wording exactly. “Dishwasher-safe,” “top-rack dishwasher-safe,” “low-temperature cycle,” and “hand-wash only” are different instructions. A statement about plain glass does not automatically cover a decorated version.
- Resolve contradictions conservatively. If the box says dishwasher-safe but the current manufacturer page says hand-wash only, hand-wash until the maker confirms which instruction applies to your production run.
- Default to hand-washing when evidence is missing. The small amount of extra work is safer than testing an irreplaceable or sentimental cup in a high-heat machine.
If the cup is explicitly dishwasher-safe
Machine-safe does not mean every cycle and every loading position is safe. Use the parameters supplied for that cup.

Use the specified temperature and program
| Maker guidance | Stated setting | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Marimekko dishwasher-safe glassware | Gentle glassware cycle up to 50°C | Do not exceed 50°C for the items covered by that guide. |
| RIEDEL dishwasher-safe items | Low-temperature or special glass program around 50–55°C | The range is RIEDEL’s recommendation for its approved items, not a universal setting. |
| Iittala named glass types | Top-rack placement is recommended in its care guide | Use the top rack only when the cup fits securely and the maker’s instructions call for it. |
Dishwashers often use hotter phases than the display suggests, and programs differ by model. Select the maker’s glass or gentle option rather than assuming that a short or “eco” program has the same temperature profile. If your machine cannot provide the required low-temperature cycle, hand-washing is the safer choice.
Load each cup so nothing touches it
- Remove hard utensils, plates, or cookware that could strike the cup during spray or drying.
- Place the cup upright in a stable slot. Do not force a wide bowl or tall stem into a position where the rack can flex against it.
- Leave visible space between the cup and every neighboring glass, plate, rack wire, and utensil. Marimekko and RIEDEL both emphasize spacing because contact can scratch or chip glass.
- Keep decorated rims away from areas where a spray arm, moving rack, or loose cutlery can hit them.
- Check that the cup cannot rock or fall when the rack is pushed in. If it moves, reposition it or wash it by hand.
- Use the top rack when the maker recommends it and the cup clears the spray arm. Never place an item on the top rack if its shape makes it unstable.
Measure detergent instead of overdosing
Use the dishwasher detergent amount specified by the appliance or the glassware maker. Orrefors identifies detergent composition and dosage, cycle temperature, cycle duration, and water quality as factors that affect glass. More detergent is not a safety margin; excess chemistry can contribute to an unwanted film or change the appearance of glass over time. Do not combine a high detergent dose with a hotter program simply to compensate for hard water.
Unload only after the glass has cooled
Iittala advises letting hot glasses cool before filling them with cold water and not stacking them while warm. Thermal shock can occur when a heated cup is suddenly exposed to cold liquid. Open the door, allow the load to cool, and handle each cup by its body rather than squeezing a hot rim.
How to hand-wash decorative glass safely
Hand-washing is the default for hand-wash-only, not-dishwasher-safe, unlabeled, and uncertain items. The goal is to remove soil without scratching the glass or dragging a sponge across a fragile finish.

- Prepare lukewarm water. Avoid an abrupt switch between very hot and very cold water. Fill a basin or sink with warm-to-the-touch water and add a small amount of mild dish detergent.
- Pad the work area. Place a folded towel or sink mat below the water line so a slipped cup is less likely to hit a hard surface. Keep knives, forks, and other sharp tools away from the basin.
- Wash one piece at a time. Support the cup from the bowl or body. Do not twist forcefully by the rim, especially if the decoration is concentrated there.
- Use a soft tool. A soft sponge, soft cloth, or soft dishwashing brush is appropriate. Iittala recommends a soft brush for its hand-wash-only glass items, and Crystalex specifies a soft sponge for decorated products.
- Clean without abrasive pressure. Wipe gently inside and outside. Avoid scouring pads, abrasive powders, stiff brushes, and any sharp implement used to dislodge dried food.
- Rinse with a gentle flow. Remove all detergent while keeping the cup supported. Do not hold a thin rim directly under a forceful jet.
- Dry carefully. Set the cup on a clean towel to drain or dry it with a soft cloth. Crystalex advises a soft cloth for decorated glass. Do not stack pieces while they are still warm or wet.
Cleaning narrow or deeply shaped cups
A soft dishwashing brush can reach the base without forcing a sponge through a narrow opening. Choose bristles that bend easily and have no exposed metal. If residue remains, soak the cup briefly in lukewarm soapy water rather than scraping it. Keep the brush away from a metallic rim or painted band when the maker warns that the finish is delicate.
Preventing chips, scratches, and thermal shock
- Separate every piece. Glass-to-glass contact can produce scratches, chips, or edge damage. This applies in a dishwasher rack and in a sink full of hand-washed cups.
- Do not stack warm cups. Let them reach room temperature first, as Iittala recommends.
- Keep temperature changes gradual. Do not pour iced water into a cup that has just come from a hot dishwasher cycle, and do not move a cold cup directly into very hot water.
- Protect the decorated zone. Rims and raised patterns are exposed to rack wires, utensils, and abrasive contact. Handle the plain glass body where possible.
- Retire visibly damaged pieces. A chip or crack can spread during washing and creates a sharp edge. Care instructions cannot make an already damaged cup safe.
Cloudiness, film, and early wear
A cloudy appearance does not have one guaranteed cause. Hard-water minerals can leave deposits, while detergent dosage or composition, water quality, temperature, and cycle duration can also affect the glass. Marimekko suggests using dishwasher salt in hard-water conditions in its dishwasher guidance.
If cloudiness appears after machine washing
- Stop using the dishwasher for that cup until you confirm its care instructions.
- Check whether the dishwasher’s salt reservoir and rinse system are set for your local water hardness, following the appliance manual.
- Verify that detergent is being measured as directed rather than poured in excess.
- Wash the cup gently by hand with mild detergent and a soft sponge or cloth. Do not attack the film with an abrasive pad.
- If the haze remains, contact the manufacturer with the model details and photographs. A cloudy cup is not proof that the item was dishwasher-safe or unsafe; it only shows that its appearance has changed.
If a metallic or painted area looks thinner
Stop machine washing and switch to gentle hand-washing while you identify the product. Do not polish a decorated rim with metal cleaner, a scouring product, or a sharp tool. Ask the maker whether the finish is expected to wear, whether the item was misidentified, and which cleaning method is approved.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“It is glass, so it can go in the dishwasher.”
Plain glass, crystal, painted glass, and metallic-rim glass are different care categories. Correct the assumption by finding the model-specific instruction before washing.

“Top rack” is treated as a guarantee
A top rack can reduce exposure to heat or spray for some products, but it does not override a hand-wash-only label. Use it only when the maker recommends it and the cup is stable.
Several cups are packed tightly together
Even a dishwasher-safe cup can be damaged when it touches another item. Re-space the load so every piece has clearance, or wash the overflow by hand.
Abrasive cleaner is used on a stubborn mark
Scouring pads and sharp tools can scratch glass and decoration. Soak briefly in lukewarm soapy water, then use a soft sponge or brush.

A retailer description is generalized to every similar cup
One product listing describes one tested construction. It cannot establish the safe method for another maker, model, or production run. Match the care instruction to the exact item in your hand.
What the manufacturer guidance establishes
Marimekko recommends checking care instructions, using a gentle cycle up to 50°C for its dishwasher-safe glassware, spacing pieces, and considering dishwasher salt in hard-water conditions. RIEDEL recommends low-temperature or glass programs around 50–55°C for its dishwasher-safe items, with adequate spacing, and hand-washing when instructions are absent. Crystalex warns that decorated products with gold, platinum, or paint are not dishwasher-safe, while noting limited exceptions for some spray-on organic paints and screen-printed décor. La Rochère advises hand-washing its gold-etched-rim products. Iittala recommends a soft brush for named hand-wash-only glass types, top-rack placement for specified items, and cooling hot glasses before contact with cold water. Orrefors identifies detergent, temperature, cycle duration, and water quality as variables that can affect glass.
These are manufacturer recommendations for identified products, not laboratory statistics or a universal certification system. No single temperature, rack position, or detergent rule can be safely applied to every decorative glass cup.
