A feature that lets friends view or vote on a profile can expose personal information beyond the app’s usual audience; a contact-matching feature is different again. Since no specific voting app is named here, there is no evidence-based way to label the whole category safe or private. Check the feature’s current privacy notice and settings before using it.
What does “other people vote on matches” mean for privacy?
The label alone does not tell you what happens to your information. One app might show selected profiles to invited friends; another might let people recommend candidates, comment, save profiles or forward them. A contact-based feature may instead compare address books and show a count of shared connections. Those designs expose different data to different audiences.

Before opting in, find out:
- Who can see the profile: invited friends, other app users, social-media contacts, or people who do not have an account?
- What they can do: vote, comment, save, share or take a screenshot—and whether votes are visible to you or anyone else.
- What the app collects: profile details, contact lists, location or connected social accounts.
- What happens when you opt out: whether past votes, imported contacts, shared copies or profile visibility are removed.
If the app does not clearly answer these questions in its feature description or privacy notice, treat the audience and retention of shared information as uncertain rather than assuming it is private.
What Tinder’s social features do—and do not—show
Tinder’s Friends in Common is an example of a social feature, but it is not a feature that lets friends vote on prospective matches. Tinder says it compares contacts for users who opt in and displays a count of shared connections, not their names. The feature is available only in select markets. Tinder says users can block contacts before starting, turn the feature off later and, when they turn it off, delete imported contacts.

Contact uploads can also involve people who do not use the app. Tinder’s notice for non-users says an uploaded address book may contain non-members’ phone numbers. Tinder says it transforms those numbers into cryptographic hashes, limits their use to Friends in Common and offers a way to request that a number be blocked. These are Tinder’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent security audit.
Separately, Tinder’s privacy policy, effective 31 March 2026, describes the personal, technical, social-media and third-party data it processes. Tinder says sensitive information a user chooses to put on a public profile, including sexual orientation and gender, can be visible to other Tinder users; its sensitive-data help page explains this. A feature that shares profiles with friends could extend the audience for profile information, but whether it does depends on that feature’s design.

Can people screenshot or share a dating profile?
Do not assume an app can prevent copying. Tinder says screenshot and screen-recording protection is available only in select regions, with behavior that differs between Android and iOS. Its guidance warns that “no technology can completely prevent profile content from being captured or shared,” including by photographing a screen with another device. The warning appears in Tinder’s screenshot and screen-recording protection article, updated 7 September 2026.

How to limit who can see your profile
Settings can reduce exposure, but check what each control actually changes. Tinder says turning off Discovery stops the profile being shown to new people while keeping existing matches and conversations. Someone you Liked before switching Discovery off may still see your profile and match. So Discovery is not a way to retroactively hide your profile from everyone. See Tinder’s Discovery Settings guidance.
For any app with a friend-sharing or voting feature, review the audience, invitation and withdrawal controls before enabling it. If you have already opted in, look for the feature-specific off switch and the app’s explanation of what happens to uploaded contacts and previously shared profile content. Deleting a feature or account should not be assumed to retract copies another person has already seen or made unless the app says so.

No. Tinder describes ID + Photo Verification as optional and available only in select test markets. The company says verification does not guarantee that an ID is valid or that a person is safe. Treat a badge as a limited signal, not proof of identity or a guarantee about someone’s behavior. Tinder’s verification guidance explains the feature’s limits.

How to compare voting features across apps
Compare the actual mechanics instead of relying on a general “safe” label. Regional availability, settings and protections can vary by country, operating system or test group.
- Audience: Identify who can see or vote on profiles, including people without accounts and anyone reached through contact or social-media connections.
- Data requested: Check whether the feature needs contacts, location, connected accounts or sensitive profile details, and why.
- Sharing controls: Look for private voting, limits on forwarding, controls over invitations and a way to block specific people.
- Withdrawal and deletion: Find out what happens to votes, imported contacts, shared copies and profile visibility when you opt out or delete your account.
- Safety response: Check how to block and report abuse, what moderation the app describes and what any verification process actually checks.
Where to find practical dating-safety guidance
For readers in Australia, the eSafety Commissioner’s online-dating guidance offers practical precautions and identifies services signed up to Australia’s Voluntary Online Dating Code. The Commissioner says the code followed a 2023 Federal Government National Roundtable on Online Dating Safety; eSafety has no role enforcing the code or legislative powers relating to its operation. The guidance is specific to Australia.
