1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSometimes—but the card shape is not what determines whether a multitool passes airport security. Under the Transportation Security Administration’s current item classifications, a multitool with no blade is allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. Add a knife blade and it is prohibited in carry-on baggage, regardless of blade length. Scissors can be carried on only when their blades measure less than four inches from the pivot point, and any tool longer than seven inches when fully assembled must go in checked baggage. A TSA officer can still require extra screening or refuse an item at the checkpoint.
What TSA actually allows
TSA rules classify the individual implements on a tool, not the marketing name printed on its package. “Credit-card multitool,” “wallet tool,” and similar labels describe a format. They do not create an exemption from the rules for knives, scissors, or other sharp components.

The clearest carry-on option is a genuinely blade-free model. TSA’s current database lists “Multi-tool without Blades” as allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage. That category is the reason a flat, wallet-sized tool can be acceptable while another product with nearly identical dimensions is rejected.

A knife changes the result completely. TSA states that multi-tools with knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags and should be packed in checked baggage. The rule applies even if the blade is tiny, folds into the card, or is advertised as an emergency feature.

Carry-on and checked-bag rules by configuration
| Tool configuration | Carry-on | Checked bag | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit-card multitool with no blade | Allowed under TSA’s “Multi-tool without Blades” entry | Allowed | Confirm the exact model has no blade or other restricted feature. |
| Multitool with a knife blade | Prohibited | Allowed | Pack it in checked baggage and protect the sharp edge. |
| Multitool with scissors under four inches from the pivot | May be allowed | Allowed | Measure the scissors from the pivot point, not the card’s overall length. |
| Tool longer than seven inches when assembled | Prohibited | Allowed | Measure end to end in its usable, assembled configuration. |
| Pocket-knife or Swiss-Army-style card tool | Prohibited when it includes a knife | Allowed | Treat any knife-bearing version as a checked-bag item. |
The seven-inch limit is an overall tool-length rule. It is separate from the four-inch scissor rule: a tool could have short scissors yet still be too long overall when assembled, or fit under seven inches while its scissors exceed the carry-on threshold.
How to inspect a credit-card multitool before you fly
Do not rely on a product title or a photograph that shows only the front of the card. Inspect the manufacturer’s component list, diagrams, and dimensions for the exact model and revision you own.
1. Inventory every implement
Write down each feature that folds, slides, swings, or can be used as an edge. Look for a knife, package opener, razor edge, saw, awl, or pointed pick as well as scissors. A tool described as “blade-free” should not contain a sharpened cutting edge hidden behind a bottle opener or ruler.
2. Check for a knife blade
If the model has any knife blade, remove it from your carry-on plan. TSA’s classification prohibits multi-tools with knives of any length in the cabin. Put the tool in checked baggage instead, with the edge covered and the item secured so it cannot injure baggage handlers or damage other luggage.
3. Measure scissors correctly
Open the scissors and measure from the pivot point—the screw, rivet, or hinge where the blades meet—to the tip of the blade. For carry-on travel, that distance must be less than four inches. Measuring the full card, the handle, or the closed scissors gives the wrong result. If the scissors are four inches or longer from the pivot, use checked baggage.

4. Measure the assembled tool
Extend or assemble the tool as it is designed to be used and measure from one end to the other. TSA’s guidance allows tools seven inches or shorter in carry-on baggage; tools longer than seven inches, measured end to end when assembled, must be checked. Record the measurement in the same configuration you would present at screening.
5. Recheck the exact version
Manufacturers sometimes sell several card tools with nearly identical names. Compare the model number, included implements, and dimensions with the item in your wallet. A retailer’s listing may combine photographs or specifications from different versions, so the physical tool and its packaging are the final reference for your preparation.
Why a blade-free card tool is the simplest choice
A blade-free tool fits directly within TSA’s named permitted category and avoids the knife prohibition. Common non-blade functions can include screw-driving slots, hex-bit openings, rulers, bottle openers, or wrench profiles. Those functions do not automatically guarantee acceptance, but they remove the most decisive carry-on disqualifier.
Even a blade-free design should be checked for other sharp or weapon-like features. A pointed implement, a sharpened edge marketed as an opener, or a construction that appears tampered with can prompt additional inspection. The safest carry-on candidate is a plainly manufactured, intact tool whose listed functions are non-cutting and whose assembled length is within the limit.
Scissors: the detail that causes most confusion
Scissors are not treated like knife blades under the stated TSA threshold. Carry-on scissors are permitted only when the blades measure less than four inches from the pivot point. The word “less” matters: a measurement of exactly four inches does not meet that threshold.

Use a ruler at home and measure the longer blade from the hinge to its point. If the scissors have an unusual shape, measure along the straight-line distance from the pivot to the tip rather than measuring the entire cutting edge. Keep the tool closed while it is in your bag, but base the decision on the open measurement.
If you cannot measure accurately, or if the manufacturer does not provide a reliable dimension, checked baggage is the lower-risk option. Do not assume that a credit-card footprint means the scissors are short enough; a long blade can fold into a compact card.
The seven-inch assembled-length rule
TSA’s guidance addresses tools longer than seven inches when measured end to end while assembled. This is not a seven-inch rule for the plastic card itself. A compact handle can unfold into a longer wrench, pry bar, or other implement.
To check it, deploy every hinged or sliding section that contributes to the tool’s working length. Measure the maximum end-to-end span in that assembled state. If the result is more than seven inches, pack the tool in checked baggage even when it has no knife and its scissors, if any, are under four inches.
What happens at the checkpoint
TSA’s classifications are guidance, not a promise that every item will pass every checkpoint without question. The agency says an item may receive extra screening or be refused if it alarms, appears tampered with, or raises another security concern. Its complete-list language is explicit: “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”

That discretion means a familiar brand name, an online listing that says “TSA-approved,” or a previous successful trip cannot guarantee the outcome on a later journey. Pack the tool so it can be removed easily if an officer wants to inspect it, and allow time for a possible bag search.
How to pack each type safely
Blade-free model in a carry-on
- Confirm the physical tool has no knife or sharpened blade.
- Verify any scissors are under four inches from the pivot.
- Verify the assembled tool is seven inches or shorter.
- Place it in an accessible pocket so it can be shown during screening.
Knife-bearing model in checked baggage
- Close and lock or secure every folding implement.
- Cover the knife edge with its sheath, a protective cap, or a rigid covering that cannot slide off.
- Place the tool inside a pouch or other container so it cannot contact clothing or other bags.
- Put the protected package in the checked suitcase before handing over the bag.
Uncertain or borderline model
- Separate the tool from your carry-on before leaving for the airport.
- Compare the exact implement list and measurements with TSA’s current item database.
- If a knife is present, check the tool rather than trying to explain its small size.
- If dimensions cannot be verified, choose a different blade-free tool or leave it at home.
Common scenarios
A flat card with a bottle opener, ruler, and screw slots
If it has no blade, no prohibited sharp feature, and is seven inches or shorter when assembled, it fits the clearest carry-on pathway under TSA’s “Multi-tool without Blades” classification. Keep the exact model accessible for inspection.
A card tool with a one-inch knife
It cannot go in carry-on baggage. TSA’s knife rule applies to blades of any length. Pack it in checked baggage with the edge protected.
A card tool with two-inch scissors
Two inches is below the four-inch threshold only if measured from the pivot point. Confirm that measurement and check the tool’s overall assembled length before carrying it on.
A card tool that unfolds to eight inches
The assembled length exceeds seven inches, so it must be checked even if it has no knife. Measure the working configuration rather than the folded card.

A tool advertised as a “survival” or “self-defense” card
Review it with extra caution. Marketing language can signal a sharpened edge, spike, or other weapon-like feature that is not obvious in a flat product photo. If the feature list is unclear, do not put it in your carry-on.
U.S. TSA rules are not a worldwide guarantee
The rules above apply to screening under the U.S. Transportation Security Administration. Airlines, individual airports, and foreign security authorities can impose additional requirements. A connection through another country may involve a second security inspection under different standards, and an airline can set baggage conditions beyond the TSA classification.
For an international itinerary, check the security authority for every airport where you will be screened and the baggage policy of the operating airline. Keep the tool in checked baggage for the entire journey when any leg has a stricter rule, or choose a simple blade-free model that meets the most restrictive requirement you can verify.

A practical preflight checklist
- Identify every implement on the exact physical tool.
- Confirm there is no knife blade or sharpened cutting edge.
- Measure scissors from pivot to tip; the carry-on limit is less than four inches.
- Measure the tool end to end when fully assembled; it must be seven inches or shorter for carry-on consideration.
- Check the current TSA classification rather than relying on a seller’s “TSA-approved” label.
- Use a protective covering and checked baggage for any knife-bearing or over-length tool.
- Allow for officer discretion and possible additional screening.
- Review airline and non-U.S. security rules for every airport on the itinerary.
Key TSA wording to remember
The classification that supports a blade-free carry-on is “Multi-tool without Blades.” TSA’s complete list states, “Multi-tools (multipurpose tools) with knives of any length are prohibited.” The same guidance warns that “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.” Those three statements explain why the exact implement list, measurements, and checkpoint circumstances all matter more than the credit-card form factor.
