Claude Artifacts are not public by default. A Free, Pro, or Max user must publish or share an artifact before people can open it through a link. Once published, anyone who has that link can access the shared version until it is unpublished. Team and Enterprise sharing works differently: access is limited to authenticated members of the organization, and project permissions may apply.
Before sharing a work artifact, inspect the conversation attachments and files as well. Anthropic’s guidance says that sharing the artifact also gives access to those associated materials.

The short answer
Claude generating an artifact does not, by itself, put that artifact on the public internet. Visibility changes when you use the product’s publishing or sharing controls.
- Free, Pro, and Max: an unpublished artifact has no public access established by Anthropic’s sharing guidance. After you publish it, anyone with the published link can open it until you unpublish it.
- Claude for Work Team and Enterprise: sharing is intended for people inside the organization. Viewers must sign in with an organizational account, and a viewer may also need access to the project that produced the artifact.
- Attachments: in a work-sharing situation, files and attachments in the related conversation can become available to the people receiving access.
“Public” therefore means link-accessible after publication, not automatically exposed merely because Claude created it. The documented behavior does not promise that an unpublished link is confidential, nor does it establish whether somebody saved or copied content before you unpublished it.

How consumer-plan artifacts become visible
Free, Pro, and Max accounts
Anthropic describes public discovery and publishing for Free, Pro, and Max users. The practical sequence is creation first, publication second. Until you choose to publish or share, do not treat the artifact as a public page.
After publication, the access rule is simple: anyone who obtains the published link can access the shared artifact. That could include a colleague, a customer, or someone who receives the URL from another person. The official wording is deliberately link-based; it does not establish that the artifact will be listed in a public directory, indexed by search engines, or otherwise easy to discover without the link.
The link remains usable until you unpublish the artifact. Unpublishing is the documented way to end the published state. If the material is sensitive, do not rely on the assumption that a recipient has not already downloaded, copied, or recorded it; the guidance does not describe a recall mechanism for copies made while the link was active.

People who are not Claude users can view and interact with a publicly shared artifact for basic use without signing up. This lowers the barrier for a public demonstration or a simple interactive prototype: a recipient can follow the link instead of creating an account just to see the shared version.
Account requirements can appear when the viewer goes beyond basic viewing. Anthropic says that advanced capabilities, including customization and AI-powered features, can prompt the viewer to sign in. That sign-in requirement does not change who can open the published link for ordinary viewing; it applies to the additional features.

How Team and Enterprise sharing differs
Organization authentication
Claude for Work Team and Enterprise artifacts are shared securely within the relevant organization rather than published as an anonymous public link. A recipient must be logged in to an organizational account to view the shared artifact.
This distinction matters when you send a work artifact to an external consultant, customer, or personal email address. Possessing the URL alone is not enough if that person is not an authenticated member of the organization. The documented rule is organization membership plus login, not open web access.
Project permissions can add another gate
If the artifact was created from a project, the recipient must also have access to that project. An employee may belong to the organization and still be unable to open a project-based artifact if the project itself is outside their permissions.
When a recipient reports that a work link does not open, check both conditions separately: are they signed in to the correct organizational account, and does that account have access to the originating project? Treating the artifact link as the only permission check can lead to a confusing access failure.
Attachments and files are part of the sharing decision
Anthropic states that sharing a work artifact also allows access to attachments and files in the conversation. The artifact may therefore expose more than the rendered interface. A spreadsheet, image, document, or data file attached during development should be reviewed as part of the audience decision.

This is especially important for prototypes that summarize internal data. Before sending the link, identify every attachment in the associated conversation, remove or replace anything the recipient should not see, and confirm that the intended viewers have the appropriate project and organization permissions.
What exactly does a shared link represent?
The shared version is specific
A shared artifact link points to the version that was shared. Later edits to the creator’s working artifact should not be assumed to change what an earlier recipient saw. If the artifact has several revisions, verify the selected version immediately before publishing.
A useful operational habit is to give each release a clear internal label, then open the link in a separate browser session or another account to confirm that the displayed version is the one you meant to distribute. This check is about avoiding version mistakes; it does not create an additional privacy control.
Customization creates a copy
When another person customizes a shared artifact, Claude creates that viewer’s own copy. Their modifications do not alter the creator’s original. This separation protects the original artifact from accidental edits by viewers, but it also means that a customized result is a separate artifact with its own owner and sharing context.
Do not assume that unpublishing your original will erase copies that viewers created while the link was available. Anthropic’s documented guidance explains the copy behavior but does not state that creator-side unpublishing deletes a viewer’s customized copy.

AI-powered features and account usage
Basic public viewing does not require a viewer to sign up, but AI-powered functions do require sign-in. When a viewer uses those AI features, Anthropic says the usage counts against the viewer’s own Claude plan limits, not the creator’s allowance.
That division is useful when distributing an interactive prototype: simply opening it does not consume the creator’s plan limits, while a recipient who chooses AI functionality needs an account and uses their own plan capacity. The guidance does not provide a universal number of free interactions or a separate artifact quota, so avoid promising a specific allowance.
Visibility by situation

A safe sharing procedure
Use this sequence whenever the artifact contains internal information or will be sent beyond the person who created it:
- Identify the account type. Determine whether the artifact belongs to a Free, Pro, or Max consumer account, or to a Team or Enterprise workspace. The account type determines whether link access can be public or requires organizational authentication.
- Confirm the intended audience. For a consumer artifact, decide whether “anyone who gets the link” is acceptable. For a work artifact, list the organization members and project members who should be able to view it.
- Check the exact version. Sharing is tied to the version selected for publication. Review the content, interface, and data shown in that version rather than relying on the latest draft in your editor.
- Audit the conversation. Inspect attachments and files associated with the artifact, particularly documents containing personal, financial, customer, or internal company information.
- Publish or share deliberately. Use Claude’s publishing or sharing control only after the audience and version checks are complete. Creation alone does not publish a consumer artifact.
- Test as a recipient. For a consumer link, test basic viewing in a session that is not signed in. For a work link, test with the correct organizational account and verify project access. Testing reveals an incorrect audience or missing permission before distribution.
- Explain feature limits to viewers. Tell recipients that customization or AI-powered functions may require sign-in. Their AI use is charged to their own Claude plan limits, according to Anthropic’s guidance.
- Unpublish when the link should no longer be active. Unpublishing ends the documented published state, but it cannot be treated as a guarantee that recipients did not retain copies made earlier.
Common scenarios
“I only generated it in a private conversation.”
That action does not establish public access. The public-link rule begins when a consumer user publishes or shares the artifact. Keep the artifact unpublished if you are still working through sensitive content or deciding who should see it.

For Free, Pro, or Max, the relevant permission is possession of the published link, not the identity of the first colleague. Anyone to whom that link is forwarded can potentially open it while it remains published. For Team or Enterprise, the colleague also needs the required organizational login and any project permission.
“A customer outside our company needs to see a work prototype.”
The documented Team and Enterprise model is internal, authenticated sharing. It does not establish anonymous external access for a customer. Consider whether the customer can legitimately receive an account in the organization’s sharing arrangement; otherwise, do not represent a work-only link as publicly accessible.
“A viewer changed my artifact.”
Customization produces the viewer’s own copy, so the creator’s original is not changed by that action. The copy has its own content and should be treated as a separate artifact for any later sharing decision.
“Can I embed a public artifact on another site?”
Anthropic describes allowed-domain controls for embedding a publicly shared artifact on another website. Those controls govern where an embed can be placed; they should not be described as a restriction on who can open the artifact’s own published link unless a separate permission setting confirms that behavior.

Limits of what the documented controls establish
The official guidance supports a precise, conditional privacy statement: consumer artifacts become accessible to anyone with the published link; work artifacts require authenticated organizational access and may require project access; attachments and files can be included in work sharing; and viewers can create independent customized copies.
It does not establish that an unpublished artifact is protected by a blanket confidentiality guarantee, that a published link is impossible to discover, or that unpublishing retracts content somebody already saved. Use the controls as audience-management tools, and remove sensitive information before publication when a link-based audience is too broad.
Anthropic’s support material also does not provide a named statistic about artifact visibility or a universal retention period. Avoid inferring one from the existence of a share button. The safest interpretation is the narrow one documented above: publication enables link access for consumer plans, while work sharing applies organization and project permissions.
Bottom line for privacy decisions
Claude Artifacts are private until you deliberately publish or share them, but a published consumer artifact is not limited to the person you originally sent it to: anyone with the link can access it until you unpublish it. Team and Enterprise artifacts are a separate case, requiring an authenticated organizational account and sometimes project membership. Always inspect the associated conversation files, verify the exact version, and remember that a viewer’s customized copy is independent of your original.
