Which Birkenstock width should you choose?
Birkenstock’s US fit guide recommends Regular for medium-to-wide feet and Narrow for narrow-to-medium feet. Those are the brand’s sizing equivalencies, not universal shoe-width standards. “Do Birkenstocks run wide?” has no single answer across the range: width choices depend on the particular style and size, so check the product listing rather than assuming every model comes in Regular.

On some pairs, the footprint mark on the footbed can help identify width: Birkenstock’s UK FAQ says an outlined footprint indicates Regular, while a filled footprint indicates Narrow.

Measure both feet before choosing a size
Width is only one part of fit. Birkenstock advises measuring foot length and width, checking both feet, and using its size chart or calculator. Its printable template offers another way to compare your foot outline with a model’s fit guide.
- Measure both feet and use the larger foot when checking fit.
- If using Birkenstock’s printable template, print it at 100% scale, trace your foot and compare the outline with the template.
- Verify the template’s millimeter scale against a ruler before relying on it. A measuring ruler may help, but the printable method does not require buying a special tool.
- Check the exact style listing for the available width and size, then try on that combination if possible.
Birkenstock says most of its models are available in two widths, but that does not mean every style or size is offered in both. Width availability and stock can change.

How to check the fit when you try them on
Open the straps, place your foot on the footbed and fasten the straps comfortably. Birkenstock’s US fit guide suggests about ¼ inch of space around the foot and says the toes should not touch the edge. The UK FAQ advises leaving some room at the sides, even in Narrow, while keeping the foot from sliding over the footbed’s side rims.
- Toe room: Your toes should not press against the front or back edge.
- Side clearance: Your foot should sit within the footbed sides, not spill over the rims. Some space at the sides is expected.
- Straps: They should hold your foot comfortably without creating pressure points. Birkenstock says straps can be adjusted; its UK FAQ mentions extra holes as an option if they remain too loose.
These are Birkenstock’s fit checks, not a guarantee that a particular model will feel comfortable for every foot. If your foot presses against the sides or your toes touch the edge, try another size or a style with a better fit rather than relying on the width label alone.

What Birkenstock says about support—and what that means
Birkenstock describes its roomy shape as allowing toes to spread naturally. The UK FAQ says: “This is because BIRKENSTOCK shoes are designed to allow your toes to spread naturally, unlike narrow fashion shoes.” That is the manufacturer’s design intent; it does not by itself establish a health benefit or prove that the sandals will suit every wearer.
The official fit and product guidance explains width choices and fit cues, but does not establish that a particular pair treats foot pain or corrects a condition. Treat “support” as a description of the brand’s footbed design, not a promise of a medical result.

Adjust to a new footbed gradually
Birkenstock recommends starting with short wear periods, keeping straps loose at first to reduce pressure points, and wearing the sandals around the house for one to two hours at a time before gradually increasing wear. This is the brand’s adjustment advice, not a guarantee that persistent discomfort will resolve. Stop wearing a pair that causes pain or pressure that does not ease, and reassess its fit.
