Treasure islands are unofficial, player-run Animal Crossing: New Horizons islands stocked with unusually large quantities of items. They are not a Nintendo feature. Visiting one may save time, but it also creates legal, account, gameplay, and personal-safety uncertainty that Nintendo’s published policies do not resolve for each individual visitor.
The careful answer is neither “everyone gets banned” nor “there is no risk.” Nintendo prohibits unauthorized modification, cheating, circumvention, and unauthorized devices; it can remove content or restrict online services after agreement breaches. No reliable public statistic shows how often a treasure-island visitor is punished, loses items, or suffers a corrupted save.

What “treasure island” means in Animal Crossing
In community use, a treasure island is an Animal Crossing: New Horizons island arranged by a player to contain large quantities of materials, furniture, clothing, recipes, seasonal objects, currency items, or other loot. The host generally opens the airport and publishes a Dodo Code so other players can fly in and collect items.
Many such islands are associated with modified consoles, save editing, automation, or other methods that are outside ordinary gameplay. That association comes from community descriptions, not from a Nintendo definition. Nintendo’s official game information supports visiting and sharing islands, but it does not identify “treasure islands” as an authorized service or feature.

- Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
That distinction matters. Flying to another player’s island through the game’s normal airport is an official multiplayer function. The way an island was stocked, however, may involve conduct that Nintendo’s agreements prohibit.
Is visiting one safe?
Safety depends on which risk you mean. A visitor can complete a flight without an immediate problem, yet still face uncertainty about the origin of items, the host’s behavior, or how Nintendo may treat unauthorized content. The published policies establish that consequences are possible; they do not establish a visitor-specific probability.
| Risk area | What Nintendo’s published material establishes | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Online access or account | Nintendo may restrict online use for breaches of user agreements or its Code of Conduct. Its support documentation identifies error 2124-5114 as an online restriction for a software title after an agreement breach. | There is no published percentage showing how often a treasure-island visitor is restricted, and no rule saying every visitor will be banned. |
| Items and other content | Nintendo says content obtained through an unauthorized device or unauthorized modification may be removed. | There is no item-by-item guarantee that every altered, duplicated, or otherwise unusual object will remain usable. |
| Console or software function | Nintendo warns that noncompliance involving unauthorized devices or modifications may render console or software functionality permanently unusable in whole or in part. | The public wording does not provide a treasure-island-specific failure rate or a prediction for a particular console. |
| Personal safety and conduct | Players can report inappropriate visitors and block future contact by removing people from their Friend List. | No policy can guarantee that a public Dodo-Code session will be pleasant, private, or free of harassment. |
| Save integrity | The official material cited here does not publish a treasure-island-specific corruption statistic. | Claims that visits are guaranteed to corrupt saves, or guaranteed never to do so, are unsupported. |
What Nintendo’s rules say
Unauthorized modification and devices
Nintendo’s Switch User Agreement prohibits bypassing, modifying, defeating, tampering with, or circumventing console or software protections. It also prohibits using unauthorized devices and accessing another person’s console, device, account, or data without consent. Those clauses concern the conduct used to create or access some treasure islands, not merely the existence of the in-game airport.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not install software, attach a device, alter a save, or provide account access just to reach an island. A host or service that asks you to defeat console protections is asking for a materially higher-risk action than a normal multiplayer visit.
Content can be removed
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 User Agreement states: “Content obtained through the use of an unauthorized device, or through the unauthorized modification of the Console or the Software, may be removed.” The wording is broad. It does not promise that an item will remain in your inventory because you received it from another player, nor does it describe a separate safe category for duplicated or edited objects.
Online restrictions and suspension
Nintendo’s online-service guidance says that an online restriction can follow a breach of user agreements, including Code of Conduct violations. Nintendo’s community guidelines also say violations may lead to suspension, disabled access to games or services, and removal of user entries or content.

These documents establish possible enforcement, not an automatic penalty for every visitor. They also do not publish a special “treasure-island rule” or a probability table. Treat absolute assurances such as “you can never be banned” as claims that go beyond the available policy language.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan you get banned simply for visiting?
A visitor-specific ban rule is not published. The defensible conclusion is that risk exists because Nintendo prohibits unauthorized modification, cheating, circumvention, and unauthorized devices, while the chance of enforcement for a particular visit is unknown.
There is an important difference between ordinary multiplayer behavior and participating in prohibited conduct. Flying with a Dodo Code uses a Nintendo-supported feature. Installing unauthorized software, modifying a console, using someone else’s account without permission, or helping circumvent protections can independently violate the agreement. A visitor who only flies in cannot honestly be promised immunity, but neither can anyone cite a reliable statistic proving that every such visitor will be banned.
Are hacked or unusual items safe?
“Safe” can mean several different things:
- Safe to pick up: An object may appear normally in the game and be collectible during a session.
- Legitimate under ordinary play: The object may be altered, duplicated, or unobtainable through normal progression, so its origin is uncertain.
- Guaranteed to remain: Nintendo’s agreement says content obtained through unauthorized devices or modification may be removed.
- Safe for your account and console: No official source cited here gives an item-level guarantee or a visitor-specific risk percentage.
An item that works today is not proof that its origin complies with Nintendo’s rules. Keep your expectations limited: unusual content can be removed, become unusable, or lose value if the online service changes. Do not trade away irreplaceable legitimate items in exchange for objects whose provenance you cannot verify.
Before you use a Dodo Code
Use this decision process before opening the airport:
- Read the host’s rules. Check what categories, quantities, time limits, and areas are allowed. A host’s instructions are not Nintendo authorization, but ignoring them creates avoidable conflict.
- Reject account or software requests. Never provide your Nintendo Account password, recovery codes, payment credentials, or remote access. Do not install an unauthorized program or device to join.
- Assess the source. Prefer a host with a visible moderation policy, clear session controls, and a history of responding to disruptive visitors. Reputation is community evidence, not a safety guarantee.
- Check for pressure or payment demands. A request for money, login details, or personal information increases your exposure. If the offer depends on secrecy or urgent action, leave.
- Decide what you can lose. Do not bring valuables, rare legitimate items, or anything you cannot replace. A cautious visit uses a small, disposable inventory.
- Understand the uncertainty. Proceed only if you accept that online access, content, and service availability are governed by Nintendo’s agreements, not by the host’s promises.
Visitor etiquette that protects the host and other players
Treasure-island sessions often have limited space and many arrivals. Follow the host’s posted rules first, then use this baseline etiquette:
Rank #3
- Take only the quantity and categories the host allows.
- Do not shake trees, pick flowers, alter terrain, enter shops, catalog objects, learn DIY recipes, or touch decorations unless the host explicitly permits it.
- Do not leave dropped items, tools, clothing, or other litter behind.
- Keep the airport entrance clear so arrivals and departures can move safely.
- Do not interrupt another player’s transaction, block a path, or monopolize a pickup area.
- Use the airport to leave. Closing the game or disconnecting abruptly can interrupt the session and force the host to reset.
- If the host says the island is full, closed, or resetting, stop collecting and depart.
Host rules differ, so one island may allow cataloging while another forbids it. Treat the posted instructions as session-specific rather than assuming that behavior permitted elsewhere is acceptable here.
How to judge whether an island is worth the risk
Use these comparison points when deciding between invitations:
| Question | More reassuring sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Moderation | A named host or team explains how queues, resets, and abuse reports are handled. | No accountable host, changing instructions, or refusal to address disruptive behavior. |
| Rules | Pickup limits, prohibited actions, time windows, and departure instructions are posted before entry. | Rules appear only after you arrive, conflict with the invitation, or demand secrecy. |
| Access | Only the normal in-game Dodo-Code process is required. | Requests for passwords, account access, unauthorized software, or a modified device. |
| Items | The host describes what is available without promising impossible guarantees. | Claims that every item is permanently safe or that Nintendo cannot detect anything. |
| Session controls | Clear time, pickup, queue, and reset limits reduce crowding. | Unrestricted crowding, repeated forced disconnections, or pressure to grab everything immediately. |
| Payment | No payment or personal information is required for a normal visit. | Unexpected fees, crypto requests, gift-card demands, or requests for identifying data. |
These signs help you manage practical and social risk; they do not convert an unofficial island into an authorized Nintendo service.

What to do if a session goes wrong
A visitor is abusive or posts offensive material
End the interaction, leave through the airport if possible, and use Nintendo’s in-game Report function. You can also block future contact by removing the person from your Friend List. Save screenshots or other details only if you need them for a report, and do not retaliate with harassment or account access attempts.
The host changes the rules or demands credentials
Do not comply. Leave, block the account, and report the behavior through the available Nintendo controls. A legitimate multiplayer session does not require your Nintendo Account password.
An item disappears or behaves unexpectedly
Do not assume that a missing or unusable object proves a console failure, and do not download unapproved tools to repair it. Check whether the session completed normally, restart the game using its ordinary procedures, and contact official Nintendo Support if you experience a service or software error.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
You see an online restriction
Record the exact error code and follow Nintendo’s official support process. Error 2124-5114 is described by Nintendo as an online-use restriction for a software title after a breach of user agreements. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction with unauthorized devices or modified software; that can create additional agreement issues.

Safer legitimate ways to play
New Horizons includes official island-sharing and visiting features. You can obtain items through normal play, trading with people you trust, seasonal events, crafting, shops, and ordinary online visits that do not involve unauthorized modification or devices.
If you buy the game, use the legitimate Nintendo Switch edition available for your region and verify the current edition and seller before purchasing. A legitimate copy gives you access to the game’s supported multiplayer systems; it does not endorse any third-party treasure-island service.
A practical decision
Treasure islands can be convenient, but convenience does not remove the uncertainty surrounding modified content and unofficial hosts. The most responsible approach is to avoid any request for account credentials, unauthorized software, or console modification; understand that content may be removed and online access may be restricted; and use normal reporting, blocking, and airport-exit controls during any visit.
No reliable published evidence proves that all treasure-island visits are safe, and no evidence proves that every visitor will be banned. Treat the activity as an unofficial service with unknown odds, follow the host’s limits, and decide only after considering whether the possible loss of access, content, or time is worth the convenience.
