AirPods 4 are worth considering if you want open-fit earbuds and primarily use Apple devices. Choose the standard version if you do not need active noise cancellation (ANC) or a wireless-charging case; choose AirPods 4 with ANC if those additions matter and you are comfortable with the open fit. Neither version is a safe buy without considering fit: the earbuds have no silicone eartips or sealed in-ear isolation, and they will not suit every ear.
What is different between AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC?
The two versions share an open-fit design and USB-C charging. The ANC version adds noise-control features and a more capable charging case; the standard model keeps things simpler. The right choice depends on whether you will use those additions and how much more they cost where you shop.

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Apple’s ANC tests used pre-production AirPods 4 and iPhone 16 Pro Max units with pre-release software in July and August 2024, at 50% volume. Apple says actual battery life varies with settings, environment, and use. Choose standard AirPods 4 if you do not need ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Conversation Awareness, and would not use wireless charging or the case speaker. The ANC case’s extra features are only valuable if they fit your routine; check the current local price difference rather than assuming one version is always the better value.

When the ANC model makes more sense
Pay for AirPods 4 with ANC if you want its noise-control modes and will use its wireless-capable case. Keep expectations realistic: ANC can reduce outside noise, but it does not give an open-fit earbud the passive seal of a silicone-tipped model.
Will AirPods 4 fit your ears?
Both versions use an open design without silicone eartips. That avoids the sealed, in-ear feel some people dislike, but also means fit and retention are personal. What Hi-Fi’s 2026 AirPods guide says the fit will not suit everyone and recommends trying them before buying. If you cannot test them in person, check the retailer’s return policy.

There is no basis here for promising a fit for small ears or any particular ear shape. If earbuds often loosen or fall out for you, an open-fit AirPods 4 purchase carries more uncertainty than a design with replaceable silicone tips.

Only the ANC version has noise cancellation. What Hi-Fi describes it as impressive for an open design, but less comprehensive than AirPods Pro 3. That distinction matters: ANC reduces noise electronically, while a sealed ear tip also blocks some sound passively. AirPods 4’s open fit does not provide that seal, so they are not the best choice if strong isolation is your priority.

The ANC model also includes Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, as listed by Apple. The standard model has none of these noise-control additions.
How long does AirPods 4 battery last?
Apple rates standard AirPods 4 for up to five hours of listening on a charge and up to 30 hours with the case. For AirPods 4 with ANC, Apple’s estimates are up to four hours per charge with ANC enabled and up to five hours with noise control off; total listening time with the case is up to 20 hours with ANC enabled or up to 30 hours with noise control off. These are maximum estimates from Apple’s 2024 tests, not promises for every listener.

If you listen for long stretches without a chance to recharge, the ANC-on per-charge estimate is a trade-off to weigh against the added noise-control features.
What should you know about charging, durability, and compatibility?
Charging and case features
Both cases charge over USB-C. Apple says the USB-C charging cable is sold separately, so check whether you already have a suitable cable. Only the ANC case is specified as supporting Qi wireless charging and Apple Watch charging; it also has a speaker for Find My proximity view. The standard case does not have those listed wireless-charging features.

Dust, sweat, and water resistance
Apple rates both AirPods 4 versions IP54 under controlled laboratory testing using IEC 60529. This is resistance to dust, sweat, and water, not waterproofing. Apple says resistance can decline with normal wear, advises against swimming with them, and says not to charge them when wet. Regular cleaning matters too: debris and earwax can affect noise-control features.
Using AirPods with non-Apple devices
AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple warns that functionality may be limited. Apple identifies compatible iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro software for the relevant supported features. If you use Android or Windows, consider whether the features you expect are available before paying for an Apple-focused product.
How to decide whether they are worth the price
- Decide on the fit first. AirPods 4 are open-fit earbuds, not sealed in-ear headphones. If that shape does not suit you, neither version is likely to be the right purchase.
- Choose the features you will use. The ANC version adds ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, wireless charging support, and a case speaker. The standard version omits these extras.
- Factor in listening habits. Apple’s ANC-on estimate is up to four hours per charge; if that is too short for your typical listening sessions, compare other options.
- Check current local prices and alternatives. There is no universal price or break-even point established here. Apple’s comparison page includes newer AirPods models, so compare the versions currently available in your region rather than treating the 2024 lineup as the whole market.
