No. An AI-writing detector can flag text for review, but its score cannot prove who wrote it. The tools estimate whether wording resembles text produced by a language model; they do not observe the writer, prompts, edits, or chain of custody. Universities and regulators increasingly treat detector output as one limited signal that must be checked against drafts, version history and a conversation with the author.
The short answer: a detector score is not proof
AI detectors classify text according to statistical and linguistic patterns. A high score means that the submitted passage resembles examples the detector associates with generated text. It does not establish that an AI system produced the passage, that the named student used one, or that the text was submitted unchanged.

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) states that detector scores are probability estimates and that “any score, either high or low, is insufficient evidence by itself to allege misconduct.” Its more specific guidance says, “The ‘AI score’ alone is insufficient to bring an allegation of misconduct. Additional evidence is required to make an allegation of gen AI misuse.” The University of Minnesota’s faculty guidance likewise says that generative-AI detection tools “cannot provide proof of AI authorship.”
The University of British Columbia goes further. In guidance updated September 14, 2026, it says use of applications to detect AI-generated content is “strongly discouraged at this time” because of concerns about effectiveness, accuracy, bias, privacy and intellectual property. Those positions do not mean every detector is useless. They mean its output must be treated as an investigative prompt, not a verdict.

What an AI detector actually measures
A detector does not recover the history of a document. It analyzes the text it receives and calculates how closely its features match patterns found in human- and machine-written examples. Depending on the system, those features can include word choices, predictability, sentence-length variation, punctuation, repetition and stylistic regularity.
This distinction matters because authorship is a process, while detection is a snapshot. A person may brainstorm with software, write a draft, revise it heavily, translate it, or use a grammar assistant. A model may generate a passage that a person substantially rewrites. The detector sees only the submitted wording, not those actions. It therefore cannot provide a chain of custody comparable to a file’s version history or an in-class writing session.
Why accuracy changes with the text and the test
Detector performance is not a single universal percentage. Results depend on the language model that generated the text, the detector’s training and version, the genre, the language, the amount of text, and how much editing occurred.

|---|---|---|
| Long, unedited output from a model covered by the detector | Often easier for the system to separate from a comparable human sample | It still produces false positives and false negatives, and performance may change after a model or detector update. |
| Short passages | Scores become less stable | There are fewer linguistic signals, so a few ordinary sentences can dominate the estimate. Check the product’s minimum-length requirement. |
| Human-edited or “humanised” output | Detection reliability can fall sharply | Rephrasing, altered sentence lengths, spelling changes and tone adjustments can remove the patterns used by the classifier. |
| Mixed human and AI writing | The system may classify the whole passage or parts inconsistently | A single percentage cannot identify which sentences came from which source or how they were changed. |
| Paraphrased, translated or multilingual writing | Both missed AI text and false alarms are possible | Language transfer and paraphrasing change the features the detector expects. |
| Unusual genres, technical writing or formulaic assignments | Scores may be misleadingly high or low | Predictable phrasing can resemble model output even when a person wrote every word. |
Changing wording, complexity, sentence rhythm or spelling can also reduce a detector’s confidence. That is an evasion problem, but it is equally an accuracy problem: a system that can be pushed from “AI” to “human” by superficial edits is not measuring authorship directly.

What independent evaluations show
A 16-detector, 126-essay comparison
A peer-reviewed comparison evaluated 16 publicly available AI-text detectors using 126 essays: 42 generated by ChatGPT-3.5, 42 generated by ChatGPT-4 and 42 written by students. The researchers measured overall accuracy, uncertainty, false positives (human text labeled as AI) and false negatives (AI text labeled as human).
This design is valuable because it tests more than a headline accuracy number. However, it does not establish one accuracy rate for every detector, model, language, assignment or institutional deployment. A detector can perform well on one benchmark and poorly on a short, edited or multilingual submission. A score reported without the tested conditions is therefore difficult to interpret.
NIST’s 2024 pilot
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s 2024 pilot, published June 25, 2025, also found substantial variation between systems. Some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected AI text from almost all generators. The result is a warning against treating “AI detector accuracy” as one stable property shared by all products.
Bias across writers
Liang and colleagues’ 2023 study, cited in University of Minnesota guidance, reported bias against non-native English writers. In practice, a high score may reflect language-style features associated with the detector’s training data rather than use of an AI system. Institutions should also examine possible effects on neurodivergent writers and on anyone whose writing differs from the examples used to calibrate the tool.

A false positive is not a harmless technical glitch when a grade, scholarship, immigration status or disciplinary record is at stake. The burden of proof must not be shifted to a writer merely because an opaque classifier produced a high number.
Why a percentage cannot establish authorship
Consider what a detector score leaves unanswered:
- Who entered the words into a document?
- Which prompts, if any, were used?
- How much of an output was copied, edited, translated or paraphrased?
- Did a person independently write the same passage using conventional research and drafting?
- Was the document assembled from several authors or earlier drafts?
The score answers none of these questions. It is an estimate about resemblance. Even a very high score is compatible with several different production histories, including an entirely human one. Conversely, a low score does not certify that no AI assistance occurred.
For that reason, a responsible investigation should preserve the original file, inspect the writing process and test the factual and scholarly quality of the work. A detector report can identify passages worth discussing; it cannot substitute for that discussion.

What counts as stronger corroborating evidence
Evidence that records how a document was produced is more directly relevant to an authorship question than a linguistic probability. TEQSA identifies version-history and writing-process tools, including Cadmus, Inktrail, Turnitin Clarity and Grammarly Authorship, as examples of process evidence. Their presence does not automatically prove compliance or misconduct, but a genuine sequence of drafts is easier to evaluate than a standalone score.

- Outlines and research notes: Check whether ideas, sources and structure develop in a plausible sequence.
- Drafts and version history: Look for sustained writing over time, substantive revisions and the origin of unusual passages.
- Paste and edit records: A large unexplained insertion may warrant questions, but it is not by itself proof of prohibited use.
- Supervised or prior writing: Compare the work with writing produced under known conditions, while allowing for legitimate changes in genre and support.
- References and claims: Verify quotations, citations, calculations and factual assertions. Fabricated sources can be investigated directly without relying on a detector.
- Conversation or viva: Ask the author to explain the thesis, evidence, revisions and choices in the submitted work.
These sources should be interpreted together and in context. A writer may have a valid explanation for a discontinuity, and an apparently smooth history can still include assistance that policy forbids. The point is to gather evidence about the actual process rather than infer it from style alone.

A high score is not a finding of guilt. Respond calmly, preserve your records and ask for the procedure being used.
- Request the complete report. Ask for the passages highlighted, the score, the threshold that triggered concern, the detector’s name and version, and the date of analysis.
- Ask what other evidence is being considered. You are entitled to know whether the concern rests only on a score or also on citations, drafts, examination answers or other facts.
- Preserve your evidence. Keep the original file, local backups, cloud version history, outlines, notes, source PDFs and earlier exports. Do not rewrite the document after the allegation in a way that destroys the record.
- Explain your process. Be ready to describe when and where you researched, how your argument developed, which tools your course permits and why particular revisions were made.
- Use the ordinary appeal route. Follow the institution’s academic-integrity notice, hearing and appeal deadlines. Request accommodations or an adviser if policy allows them.
- Correct factual errors directly. If the report points to a wrong citation or invented reference, address that issue separately from the detector’s probability estimate.
Do not claim that another detector can certify your innocence. Running the same text through several services may produce conflicting numbers and can expose your work to additional data collection. Your strongest response is documented authorship and a fair process, not a lower score from a different classifier.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchHow institutions should evaluate a detector
Before adopting a system, an institution should test the product on the kinds of writing it will actually assess and publish how results will be used. The relevant questions include:
Best Value
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| False positives and false negatives | How often is known human writing flagged? How often does known generated text pass? Are confidence intervals and sample sizes reported? |
| Text conditions | What happens with short, edited, mixed, paraphrased, translated and multilingual submissions? |
| Bias | Has performance been checked across non-native English writers, neurodivergent writers and relevant demographic or linguistic groups? |
| Transparency | Does the vendor explain calibration, thresholds, uncertainty, model coverage and meaningful changes between versions? |
| Privacy and consent | Is student work retained, used for training, transferred across borders or shared with third parties? Can a student opt out? |
| Operational limits | What is the minimum text length, which languages and models are covered, and how quickly can results change after an update? |
| Policy role | Is the output only a conversation starter, or is someone treating it as disciplinary evidence? Does the written policy require corroboration? |
Scores should never be the sole basis for a failing grade, misconduct allegation or adverse record. If a tool is used, staff should receive training on uncertainty, bias, data handling and the difference between investigating a concern and proving an allegation.
A practical decision rule
For students, the rule is simple: treat a detector result as a request to explain your process, not as a scientific determination of guilt. For instructors, ask whether the same concern can be tested with ordinary academic evidence—drafts, references, supervised writing and a conversation—before escalating. For institutions, require a documented policy, independent validation and privacy safeguards before deployment.
AI detection may help prioritize a human review, especially when combined with clear course rules and process records. It cannot answer the authorship question on its own, and no score—high or low—should be presented as a certificate of who wrote a text.
