AI travel agents are useful for searching, comparing and organizing trips, but they are not automatically safe or reliable at checkout. Treat the system as an assistant, not the seller. Before paying, identify the legal merchant, verify the airline or hotel reservation on the supplier’s own website, check the complete mandatory price and rules, and keep a human support route. Your refund and other remedies usually depend on the company that actually contracted with you, not the AI interface that suggested the trip.
What an AI travel agent actually does
An AI travel agent is a conversational system that can interpret a request such as “find a refundable flight to Rome next month,” search connected travel inventories, rank options and sometimes complete payment. Its authority varies widely. Some systems only search and send you to another site; some fill a supplier’s booking form; a smaller number issue the ticket or room reservation themselves through an agency or other intermediary.

The conversation can make every stage look like one transaction even when several companies are involved. The AI may be operated by one company, the checkout by a travel agency or online intermediary, and the flight or room supplied by a separate airline or hotel. Those parties can have different contracts, support hours, refund processes and legal obligations.

The four checks that determine booking safety
1. Identify the contracting party
The U.S. Department of Transportation states: “When you purchase a ticket through a travel agency or agent, you are not buying a ticket directly from the airline.” The agency books on your behalf, and the airline may be limited in the help it can provide. In practice, the company named on your receipt, terms or payment statement controls the first line of recourse.

Ask the AI to state the merchant of record, legal business name, country or state of registration and whether it is acting as an agent or selling the travel product itself. Do not treat a brand name in a chat window as proof of the legal seller. Save the agency’s terms and the exact support address before you submit payment.
2. Check the all-in price
A low conversational quote is not a reliable price until the final payment page shows all mandatory taxes, service charges, baggage costs, resort or destination fees and other required add-ons. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s rule on unfair or deceptive fees for covered short-term lodging transactions took effect on May 12, 2025. It applies to third-party platforms and travel agents and prohibits bait-and-switch pricing and obscured mandatory fees.
Compare the final total, not the first number produced by the model. A flight can become more expensive when a carry-on, seat or payment fee is added. A hotel can display a nightly rate while a mandatory resort fee appears only at checkout. Take a screenshot or download the itemized total.

3. Verify the exact rules
Language models can summarize a fare or room policy incorrectly, especially when several rate types look similar. Open the underlying fare rules and hotel terms and confirm:
- Passenger names, travel dates, airports, operating carrier and flight numbers.
- Fare class, baggage allowance, seat terms and whether a connection is protected.
- Room category, occupancy, bed type, taxes, meal inclusions and check-in restrictions.
- The cancellation deadline in the property’s local time, refund amount, change fee and no-show treatment.
- Whether the reservation is refundable by the supplier, the intermediary or neither.
4. Confirm support and auditability
A booking is not dependable if you cannot reach a person when a flight is canceled or a hotel cannot find your reservation. Require a human escalation route, a ticket or room locator issued by the supplier, and a record of the prompts, approvals and final terms. Systems used by businesses should provide logs, monitoring and a correction process; consumers should create their own record by saving confirmations, receipts and chat transcripts.
Can an AI get a flight booking wrong?
Yes. Errors can occur before payment (wrong airport, date or passenger), during ticketing (a payment accepted without an issued ticket), or after purchase (a schedule change that the intermediary fails to pass on). A conversational answer is not evidence that a ticket exists. Look up the airline’s reservation using the supplier confirmation code and passenger surname, then check that the e-ticket number or ticket status is present.

Intermediary bookings can complicate changes. The airline may direct you back to the agency that issued the ticket, while the agency may need to request a refund from the airline before paying you. For a tight connection, a complex itinerary, a visa-sensitive route or travel involving an unaccompanied minor, verify every segment directly and consider booking with the operating airline when the price difference is acceptable.

Hotel inventory changes quickly and properties often sell several rates for the same room. An AI can merge details from a nonrefundable rate with a refundable one, misread a “pay at property” condition or confuse a similarly named property. After checkout, contact the hotel through its independently found phone number or official website and ask it to confirm the guest name, dates, room type, payment arrangement and cancellation deadline. Keep the intermediary’s confirmation as well; the hotel may see a different reference number.
Be especially cautious with properties in different cities that share a name, hotels with multiple buildings, and bookings made in a time zone different from your own. The cancellation deadline belongs to the contract’s stated local time, not necessarily the time shown by your device.

How to book safely: a verification sequence
- Define the request precisely. Give the AI traveler names exactly as on identity documents, preferred airports, date flexibility, baggage needs, room occupancy and whether you require a refundable option. Never provide a passport or payment number in a chat unless you have independently confirmed the service’s security and necessity.
- Request seller details before shopping. Ask which company will charge you, which airline or hotel will provide the service, where each is legally established and whether the system is only comparing products.
- Generate alternatives. Ask for at least two options with the fare or room class, total mandatory price, baggage or inclusions, cancellation deadline and supplier name shown separately. Treat the output as a shortlist, not a contract.
- Open the supplier or agency checkout. Check the web address, business identity, contact details and payment page. The FTC warns about fake airline and hotel websites and payment requests using wire transfers, gift cards, payment apps or cryptocurrency. A legitimate seller should not pressure you into an irreversible payment method.
- Re-enter and review traveler data. Confirm spelling, birth dates where required, dates, airports, room occupancy and loyalty numbers. Automated transfers can introduce errors.
- Compare the itemized final total. Include taxes, service fees, baggage, seats, resort charges and currency-conversion costs. Do not authorize payment while any mandatory amount is described as “to be added later.”
- Read the operative terms. Expand the fare rules or hotel policy and record the cancellation time zone, refund method, change restrictions and no-show consequences.
- Pay with a disputable method. A credit card or another method with a formal dispute process generally gives you more practical recourse than a wire, gift card, cryptocurrency or direct payment-app transfer.
- Verify issuance immediately. Use the airline’s or hotel’s own site to retrieve the reservation. A confirmation email from the intermediary alone is insufficient.
- Archive the record. Save the receipt, contract, fare rules, hotel terms, supplier locator, ticket or voucher, support contacts and a transcript of material AI claims. Keep them available offline while traveling.
- Set a human escalation path. Record the agency’s case number process and the supplier’s emergency contact. For schedule changes, contact the party that issued the ticket or voucher first, then the operating supplier.
Who refunds you when an AI booking fails?
Start with the contracting party shown on the receipt. If an agency sold the ticket or room, it may need to obtain funds from the airline or hotel before issuing your refund. The supplier can sometimes help with a disruption, but it may be unable to change or refund an agency-issued booking directly. Your card issuer’s dispute process is a possible escalation for non-delivery or an unauthorized charge, subject to its deadlines and evidence requirements.
Do not assume that an AI’s promise of “free cancellation” overrides the written contract. If the system displayed a misleading price or rule, preserve the screen, final terms and payment record. Those documents are more useful to a regulator, card issuer or court than a paraphrase of the chat.

These protections are not interchangeable. A certificate or fee rule may apply only to a particular product, seller, consumer location or transaction date. If the seller is offshore, enforcing a claim can be harder even when the advertising reached you locally.
How reliable are AI travel recommendations?
Reliability has to be measured for a defined task rather than assumed from fluent conversation. A 2026 benchmark tested travel agents on 12 scenarios across six categories, expanding to 48 samples, to expose implicit animal-welfare policy failures. A separate 2026 hotel-selection audit evaluated 12 open-weight and proprietary models using randomized personas, prompts and hotel attributes. These studies show that agents can be tested for policy compliance and recommendation quality; they do not establish a universal market-wide booking success or error rate.
For your own evaluation, repeat the same request with small changes in dates, budget and constraints. Check whether the system preserves non-negotiable requirements, distinguishes refundable from nonrefundable offers and cites a real supplier confirmation. A model that changes its answer when a constraint is restated needs closer supervision, regardless of how confident its prose sounds.
A practical scorecard for comparing AI travel agents

When booking direct is the safer choice
Use the airline or hotel directly when the itinerary is expensive, time-critical, medically or visa sensitive, or likely to change. Direct booking usually leaves fewer parties between you and the provider, although it does not eliminate schedule-change or cancellation rules. An AI can still help you compare dates and organize questions; complete the transaction only after the supplier’s site shows the exact terms you accept.

An intermediary may be reasonable for a simple, low-cost, clearly refundable stay when its legal identity, total price, supplier confirmation and human support are all visible. The convenience is not worth accepting an unknown seller, an unverified confirmation or an irreversible payment demand.
What to do if something goes wrong
- No reservation found: Contact the issuing agency immediately with the payment receipt, then ask the airline or hotel to search by name and dates. Do not pay a second time until responsibility is clear.
- Wrong name or date: Request a correction before departure or check-in; document the exact error and the time you reported it.
- Cancellation or schedule change: Follow the issuer’s instructions, ask for written alternatives and record any deadline. The operating airline may not be authorized to refund an agency-issued ticket.
- Unexpected mandatory fee: Capture the advertised and checkout prices, request an itemized explanation and use the seller’s complaint channel, card dispute process or relevant consumer authority.
- Suspected fake website or payment scam: Stop communicating through the suspicious channel, contact the card issuer or payment provider, and report the seller to the applicable consumer or aviation authority.
Bottom line
An AI travel agent is safest as a research and administrative assistant whose work you independently verify. Reliability depends on the named contracting party, complete pricing, accurate rules, a supplier-issued confirmation and reachable human support. If any of those are missing, book through the airline or hotel’s verified channel instead.
