Not automatically. An AI shopping assistant is safer to use when you understand what personal data it collects, restrict what accounts and payment methods it can access, require approval before purchases, and verify every order yourself. Those protections vary by service; AI branding alone is no guarantee of privacy, accuracy, or spending control.
What makes an AI shopping assistant risky?
Your data may travel beyond the shopping conversation
Shopping services may collect identity and contact details, location, and information about purchases and payments. Some may share or sell information that can be combined into profiles. An AI shopping feature may have different data practices from the retailer or platform that hosts it, so check the assistant’s own privacy policy and terms as well as the surrounding service’s disclosures. The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping guidance describes the kinds of information shopping apps may collect and share.

AI does not change consumer-protection obligations
The FTC says businesses can be liable for misleading or incomplete privacy disclosures, including omissions about how customer data is used. As the agency puts it, “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” Read the FTC’s January 2024 guidance on AI companies’ privacy commitments.
Recommendations and actions can be wrong
An assistant can misunderstand a request, return inaccurate information, or take an action you did not intend. UK government guidance notes that some AI models can “hallucinate” nonsensical or inaccurate results and recommends monitoring and human oversight. Before you buy, check the product identity, seller, price, delivery details, sponsored placement, and return terms yourself. What do consumers say they need to trust shopping agents?
Visa’s 2025 survey of 1,600 US respondents measured reported concerns and preferences—not the actual security or accuracy of any assistant. Respondents cited data security (48%), privacy (44%), purchase accuracy (44%), service reliability (40%), and lack of control (37%) as concerns about using an online shopping agent. Price matching (39%), discovering new products (38%), and saving time (38%) were reported motivations to use one.

Control over data stood out: 62% said control or deletion of agent data use was “very important,” and 23% said it was “important.” Without control over how an agent used their data, 9% said they would be extremely likely to use it and 12% very likely. These are self-reported attitudes in Visa’s survey scenario, not proof that assistants are safe or unsafe. See Visa’s 2025 report on consumer trust in agentic commerce.
How to check a service before giving it access
- Read its privacy policy and terms. Look for the types of information collected, whether conversations or purchase history are used to improve models, whether data is shared with retailers or other companies, how long information is retained, and how to delete it.
- Limit connected accounts and permissions. Review each account the assistant can access and grant only what it needs. Restrict location access in your device or app settings if location is not necessary for the task.
- Check the purchase controls. Find out whether the assistant can only recommend products, add them to a cart, or complete purchases. Look for explicit confirmation, a PIN, a spending cap, or another approval step. Do not enable ordering on a shared device if other household members should not be able to buy things.
- Secure the accounts you connect. Use a long, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Review which payment methods are linked and remove access you no longer need.
- Verify the order before approving it. Confirm the exact product and seller, total price, shipping charges and timing, return policy, and whether the recommendation is sponsored. Keep the order confirmation and seller information.
The FTC’s voice-assistant security and privacy advice recommends reviewing privacy and recording-retention controls, using a PIN or turning off voice ordering to prevent others from purchasing, choosing a strong unique password, and enabling multi-factor authentication when available. These are examples for voice assistants, not a guarantee that a particular AI shopping service offers the same controls.

Use the same checks for every service, rather than judging by the AI label or the quality of its recommendations.

What is not established about specific assistants
The available sources do not establish the current spending caps, mandatory purchase-confirmation flows, deletion options, model-training practices, or retention terms of named shopping assistants. Those controls and policies are service-specific and can change, so consult the provider’s current documentation before connecting accounts or enabling purchases. The UK government’s 2025 report on agentic AI and consumers warns that, without appropriate safeguards, agentic systems could undermine trust in AI and consumer markets.
