Apple says Apple Intelligence preview summaries of emails, messages, and notifications are generated by on-device models. Google’s Pixel feature summarizes unread messages shown in supported notifications, but its help documentation does not provide an equivalent, feature-specific statement about cloud routing, retention, logging, or model training. In either case, the summary can expose the substance of a message on your lock screen or notification shade, so privacy includes what other people can see as well as where processing occurs.
What an AI notification summary actually does
A notification summary compresses one long notification or a stack of notifications into a shorter description. The model has to analyze the text represented in the notification to produce that description. That can include message wording, the sender or conversation context shown by the app, and other text the operating system makes available to the summarization feature. Neither platform’s cited documentation publishes a complete field-by-field list of notification payload data, so it would be inaccurate to promise that only the visible sentence, or every field in the underlying message, is processed.

Summaries are not the same as a privacy filter. They create a new, condensed representation of private content. A short sentence can reveal an appointment, payment, health issue, relationship dispute, password-reset request, or other sensitive subject even when the original message is hidden. Treat the generated text as potentially sensitive and check the original conversation before acting on it.
Apple Intelligence notification summaries
Apple’s settings documentation describes summaries for long or stacked notifications. Its Apple Intelligence privacy documentation specifically mentions preview summaries of emails, messages, and notifications and states: “For example, when Apple Intelligence provides you with preview summaries of your emails, messages, and notifications, these summaries are generated by on-device models.” You can choose which apps are allowed to have notifications summarized.

Google Pixel AI notification summaries
Google describes Pixel AI notification summaries as summaries of unread messages surfaced in notifications from messaging apps. Its examples include Google Messages, Android Messages, WhatsApp, and other supported apps. The feature is controlled at the app level, so you can exclude an individual messaging app rather than disabling every notification summary.
The Pixel help page does not enumerate every notification field the model reads, state how long any data is retained, or say whether this particular feature sends data to a remote server. It also does not make a feature-specific promise about logging or model training. Those omissions matter: a general description of local Android AI processing is useful context, but it is not a complete privacy policy for Pixel notification summaries.
What is documented about where processing happens
| Feature | What the platform explicitly says | What is not established by the cited documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence preview summaries | Apple says summaries of emails, messages, and notifications are generated by on-device models. | The documentation reviewed does not say that notification summaries use Private Cloud Compute, nor does it publish a retention period or a complete list of notification fields. |
| Google Pixel AI notification summaries | Google says the feature condenses unread messages appearing in supported messaging notifications. | The Pixel feature page does not specify routing, retention, logging, or training behavior for these summaries. |
| Android AICore | Google describes AICore as a system service that runs supported AI tasks on the device and explains the privacy benefits of local processing. | AICore’s broad description does not prove that every Pixel notification-summary operation follows the same path. |
| Android Auto and Google built-in cars message summaries | Google documents a separate Assistant feature with a no-logging and no-training statement. | That statement applies to the in-car feature, not to Pixel phone notification summaries. |
Apple’s Private Cloud Compute boundary
Apple also documents Private Cloud Compute (PCC) for more complex Apple Intelligence requests that need a larger server-based model. Apple says only data relevant to the request is sent to Apple silicon servers and provides a processing report that can show whether recorded requests ran on the device or through PCC. The available feature-specific statement for notification previews is the on-device statement above; it does not establish that notification summaries are routed through PCC. Do not turn Apple’s general PCC explanation into a claim that every Apple Intelligence function is either entirely local or always cloud-based.
Why the Android AICore description is not a guarantee
AICore explains how supported on-device AI tasks can run locally, which is relevant background for Pixel owners. However, the Pixel notification-summary help page does not identify its exact processing route or provide a retention and logging policy. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Google documents the summary’s input as unread messages in notifications, while feature-specific privacy details beyond that are not stated.

What message content can be exposed
The two platforms describe the input differently, but both involve message text surfaced through notifications.
- Apple: preview summaries can cover emails, messages, and notifications, including long or stacked notification content from apps you permit.
- Pixel: summaries cover unread messages that appear in notifications from supported messaging apps. You can exclude apps individually.
- Undocumented fields: neither cited help page lists every payload field, such as hidden metadata, attachments, reactions, or notification action data. Do not assume those fields are either always processed or categorically excluded.
- Practical sensitivity: if a notification preview contains a person’s name and message text, the resulting summary may reveal the same subject in fewer words. A summary can therefore be more discreet for reading quickly but more revealing to someone glancing at your screen.
Because no source reviewed here supplies a quantified error rate, there is no evidence-based percentage for how often a summary is wrong. Summaries can omit context or misrepresent who said what. How to control Apple summaries
On an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, use the following path:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Summarize Notifications.
- Turn the feature on or off, then choose which apps may have notifications summarized.
Apple Intelligence availability depends on the iPhone model, software version, language, and region. The menu may not appear on an unsupported device or in an unsupported language. Check Apple’s current device and regional requirements before troubleshooting a missing option.

If you need evidence about processing for recorded Apple Intelligence requests, review the Apple Intelligence processing report available in Settings on supported software. The report can identify whether a request ran on the device or through PCC; it should not be interpreted as proof that every future notification summary will use the same path.
How to control Pixel AI notification summaries
Google documents the feature on Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. The documented summary languages are English and Japanese. It is off by default.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification Summaries.
- Turn summaries on or off.
- Use the app controls on the same screen to exclude individual messaging apps.
The phone may require Android System Intelligence notification access for the feature to work. If the setting is missing or summaries do not appear, confirm that the device is an eligible Pixel model, the phone is using a supported language, Android System Intelligence has the needed access, and the feature is available in your region.
Eligibility and labels can change with software updates. A compatible Pixel phone is not required for ordinary notifications; it is only relevant if you specifically want this summary feature.
Do not confuse phone summaries with Android Auto summaries
Google also offers message summaries through Android Auto and Google built-in cars. That is a separate Assistant feature with its own device, country, region, and language availability. Google’s no-logging and no-training statement for that in-car feature cannot be used as a blanket privacy claim for Pixel notification summaries. When evaluating a privacy statement, match it to the exact product surface: phone notification shade, Android Auto, or a built-in-car system.

For Pixel notification summaries, the cited help page does not answer several questions that privacy-conscious users commonly ask:
- Does the complete notification text leave the phone?
- How long are notification text or generated summaries retained?
- Are requests logged, and if so, in what form?
- Are notification summaries used to train a model?
- Which non-message fields, attachments, or metadata are included?
Those are not minor technicalities. Without a feature-specific statement, a general promise about on-device Android AI cannot fill the gap. The accurate position is that the details are not stated in the cited Pixel documentation.

It is still important to keep the claim scoped: Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence architecture includes PCC for some complex requests, while the notification-summary statement identifies on-device models. The available material does not establish a PCC path for these summaries or provide a universal retention rule for every Apple Intelligence request.

Choosing a safer setup
Use app-level exclusions for high-risk conversations
Leave summaries enabled only for apps whose notifications are low risk. Exclude work, medical, financial, password-reset, family, or confidential-client messaging apps. On Apple, choose permitted apps under Summarize Notifications. On Pixel, use the individual app exclusions under Notification Summaries.
Reduce lock-screen exposure
Even local processing does not prevent someone nearby from reading a generated summary. Review your phone’s lock-screen notification preview setting and disable previews or require authentication for sensitive apps. This protects against shoulder-surfing and shared-device exposure, which are separate from server privacy.
Verify important messages in the original app
A summary is a convenience layer, not an authoritative transcript. Open the conversation to confirm the sender, qualifiers, dates, attachments, and requested action. If a summary seems urgent or unusual, treat it as a prompt to inspect the full message rather than as proof.

Recheck after updates or language changes
Feature availability depends on model, operating-system version, language, and region. A software update can add or remove a setting, and changing the device language can affect eligibility. Revisit the notification-summary controls after major updates.
Apple and Pixel privacy comparison
| Question | Apple Intelligence summaries | Pixel AI notification summaries |
|---|---|---|
| Primary input described | Emails, messages, and notifications; long or stacked notifications can be summarized. | Unread messages surfaced in supported messaging notifications. |
| Feature-specific processing statement | Yes. Apple says these preview summaries are generated by on-device models. | No equivalent routing statement is provided on the cited Pixel help page. |
| Cloud path | PCC exists for some complex Apple Intelligence requests; use of PCC for notification summaries is not stated. | Not stated for this feature. |
| Retention, logging, and training | Not fully specified for notification summaries in the cited statement. | Not stated on the cited Pixel feature page. |
| App controls | Choose which apps can be summarized. | Exclude individual apps. |
| Documented availability | Supported Apple Intelligence iPhones, languages, and regions; requirements vary. | Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series; English and Japanese are documented. |
| Default state | Varies by setup and software; use the Settings control to verify. | Off by default. |
Bottom line for privacy-conscious users
Apple provides the clearest feature-specific processing claim: its Apple Intelligence preview summaries of emails, messages, and notifications are generated on the device. Pixel’s feature is clearly described in terms of what it summarizes—unread messages in supported notifications—but Google’s cited Pixel documentation does not spell out routing, retention, logging, or training for that feature. Android AICore’s local-processing description and Android Auto’s no-logging statement should not be substituted for a Pixel notification-summary policy.
Whichever phone you use, the summary itself can disclose private content. Limit the apps, protect lock-screen previews, and verify consequential information in the original conversation.
