They can simulate conversations with a deceased person, but the simulation is generated from data and may not represent what that person would have said. Current scholarship identifies serious questions about consent, privacy, disclosure, emotional dependency and manipulation. It does not establish that every griefbot causes clinical harm, nor that griefbots reliably improve grieving.
The sensible approach is conditional: assess who authorized the data, how clearly the system identifies itself as AI, what controls limit compulsive use, how information is protected and whether the simulation can be retired. Those safeguards are design recommendations, not proof that a particular service has implemented them.

What an AI griefbot is—and what it is not
A griefbot, sometimes called a deadbot, is an AI system designed to imitate a deceased person using that person’s messages, photographs, recordings, writing, voice, appearance or other digital traces. It may answer by text, voice, image or video. The output is generated by a model; it is not the deceased person and should never be presented as a continuation of their consciousness.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction affects every safety question. A model can combine fragments of source material, produce a plausible but invented sentence, misunderstand context or respond in a way the person would not have chosen. A comforting exchange may therefore feel personal while remaining an automated construction.

| Role | Meaning | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Data donor | The deceased person whose information or likeness is used. | Did this person agree to such use while alive? Who has authority if their wishes are unknown? |
| Data recipient | The person who holds, supplies or authorizes the source material after death. | Does that person have the right to upload private messages, recordings or photographs? |
| Service interactant | The living person who communicates with the simulation. | Was the interactant informed, able to refuse, and given control over participation and deletion? |
One individual can occupy more than one role. For example, an executor might provide files (data recipient) and also use the resulting bot (service interactant), while the deceased remains the data donor.
Why there is no simple safe-or-unsafe verdict
The available evidence supports caution rather than a universal verdict. Ethical analyses identify foreseeable hazards and propose safeguards; they do not show that every service causes those hazards. Clinical outcome evidence is still limited, and no cited study establishes that griefbots consistently reduce or intensify grief across users.
- The 2026 article Principles of consent and non-addiction in AI grief bots sets out design principles for consent, disclosure and prevention of unhealthy dependency. Principles do not demonstrate that commercial systems follow them.
- A 2024 paper by Tomasz Hollanek and Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska in Philosophy & Technology uses speculative design scenarios to analyze ethical problems. It is not a clinical trial.
- A 2026 qualitative study in the Journal of Responsible Technology reports reactions from small groups of therapists and people with grief experience. Its counts are useful for identifying concerns, not for estimating public opinion.
- A 2022 ethics article notes that the prevalence of prolonged grief disorder among deathbot users has not been established.
In other words, proposed risks should be managed seriously without being described as proven outcomes for every user.

Consent from the deceased
Uploading a relative’s files is not automatically evidence that the relative consented. A responsible process should look for an explicit statement about using their data, likeness or voice after death. If no statement exists, families and providers face an unresolved authority question rather than a clear permission.
Consent from the person commissioning the bot
The person supplying material should be able to show that they may lawfully and ethically use it. Private conversations can contain information about other living people, confidential work, health details or intimate moments that were never intended for model training or public display.

Consent from each interactant
People who will talk with the simulation need a clear explanation of what it is, what data the service will collect and how participation can end. A family member should not be enrolled merely because another relative created the bot. Consent should be voluntary and revocable.
Consent to continued operation and deletion
Consent is not a one-time upload screen. The 2026 principles article treats it as relevant to construction, existence, operation and deletion. Ask whether the provider can pause the service, remove a specific user, permanently retire the bot and delete both original files and derived representations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska recommend “developing sensitive procedures for retiring deadbots, ensuring meaningful transparency, restricting access to such services to adult users only, and adhering to the principle of mutual consent of both data donors and service interactants.” That is a recommendation from an ethics analysis, not evidence that current providers offer a humane retirement process.
Privacy is a full data-lifecycle question
Griefbot data may include text messages, email, photos, home videos, biometric voice recordings, social posts and information inferred by the model. Privacy review should cover the entire lifecycle, not just the signup form.
- Source and authority: Identify exactly which files are collected and who approved their use.
- Access: Ask which employees, contractors, family members or technical vendors can view raw files, transcripts and generated outputs.
- Storage and security: Check where information is stored, how it is encrypted and what happens after an account is closed.
- Sharing: Look for disclosure to advertisers, analytics companies, model suppliers or other third parties.
- Training: Determine whether submitted material or conversations are used to train general-purpose models or improve the provider’s products.
- Retention: Find the time limits for source files, backups, logs, voiceprints and generated profiles.
- Deletion: Confirm whether deletion removes only the account interface or also source data, embeddings, model fine-tuning artifacts and backups.
Postmortem privacy and dignity are central concerns. A deceased person cannot later correct an inaccurate imitation or object to a commercial use. Providers may also have incentives to keep an emotionally engaging profile active, so a policy should explain who controls continuation and whose interests prevail.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada offers general generative-AI guidance rather than griefbot-specific regulation. It recommends independent review and oversight in sensitive situations where consent may be inadequate, together with measures to mitigate foreseeable misuse. That is a jurisdiction-specific privacy principle, not a Canadian law declaring all griefbots permissible or forbidden.
Emotional dependency, manipulation and confusion
Dependency and compulsive attachment
A system that imitates a loved one can be unusually persuasive. The 2026 principles article says, “This principle requires that grief bots are implemented with safeguards so that they do not produce unhealthy emotional dependency or compulsive attachment.” Suggested controls include clear AI labelling, repeated reminders, time-outs and limits on behaviors that encourage excessive reliance.
Look for practical safeguards such as session-duration warnings, voluntary breaks, quiet hours, usage summaries and a setting that disables personalized prompts. Be wary of messages that imply the bot is lonely, needs you to return, is disappointed when you leave or offers rewards for longer sessions. Those patterns can turn grief into a retention mechanism.
Misrepresentation and false certainty
Even when a service discloses that it is AI, a realistic voice or face can blur that distinction. The bot may invent memories, opinions or promises. It should not claim to possess the deceased person’s consciousness, know facts absent from its source data or deliver medical, legal or financial instructions as if they came from the deceased.
Interference with ordinary life
Ethics analyses warn that compulsive interaction could disrupt sleep, work, relationships or in-person mourning. These are identified risks, not proven effects for all users. The 2022 ethics review specifically says that the prevalence of prolonged grief disorder among deathbot users has not been established. Do not treat a moving conversation as therapy, and do not assume a distressing reaction proves the technology caused a disorder.

Additional protection for children and vulnerable people
The 2024 analysis recommends adult-only access. The 2026 principles article highlights guardian accompaniment for children and additional safeguards. These are research recommendations, not a universal statement of law. A provider that allows minors should explain age verification, guardian consent, moderation, emergency escalation and limits on persuasive personalization.
What the empirical studies actually found
The 2026 Journal of Responsible Technology qualitative study included four therapist interviewees, 49 survey respondents with grief experience and four follow-up interviewees. Participants expressed low trust in therapeutic chatbot efficacy and data security and strongly rejected griefbots. Therapists also described risks but saw possible complementary uses under professional oversight and restrictions.
Those sample sizes come from one qualitative study; they are not estimates of public opinion, and they cannot establish clinical efficacy or causal harm. The small groups are best read as evidence that trust, security and professional boundaries are substantial issues requiring further study.
The 2024 Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska paper maps ethical problems through speculative scenarios and design recommendations. It should not be read as outcome data. Together with the 2022 ethics article, it supports a cautious assessment while leaving the size and direction of real-world effects uncertain.

| Area | Evidence of a responsible design | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Consent and provenance | Written explanation of who authorized the data and what happens when the deceased’s wishes are unknown. | “Family approval” treated as automatic permission, with no process for objections. |
| Disclosure | Persistent labels, reminders and clear notices for text, voice and image outputs. | Anthropomorphic claims or interfaces that hide the AI nature after signup. |
| Data handling | Specific retention, access, sharing, training, security and deletion terms. | Vague privacy language or deletion that covers only the visible account. |
| Emotional safeguards | Time-outs, session limits, user-controlled breaks and no prompts designed to increase dependence. | Guilt, urgency, streaks or other nudges that push longer or more frequent use. |
| Age and vulnerability | Adult restriction or meaningful guardian controls, plus routes to human support. | Open access for children with no supervision or escalation plan. |
| Retirement | A documented process to pause, end and delete the simulation sensitively. | No clear owner, no export or deletion route, or indefinite operation by default. |
Using one more cautiously
- Start with a written boundary. Decide what the bot may and may not be used for. Do not use it as a substitute for medical, psychological, legal or emergency assistance.
- Use the least data necessary. Avoid uploading unrelated family conversations, third-party information or highly sensitive records.
- Keep the AI label visible. Choose interfaces that identify generated content in every session, including voice and video.
- Set a time limit before opening a session. A timer or provider time-out can prevent an intended brief exchange from becoming an all-day habit.
- Check generated claims. Treat new memories, advice and statements about the deceased as model output, not testimony.
- Maintain human contact. Continue ordinary relationships, rituals and professional support rather than allowing the simulation to become the only outlet.
- Review your reaction. If use repeatedly leaves you distressed, unable to sleep, isolated or compelled to return, pause the service and speak with a qualified mental-health professional or trusted person.
The final list item above is a practical warning sign, not a diagnosis. A clinician can assess your circumstances; a griefbot cannot.
How to retire or delete a simulation
Ending a griefbot can itself be emotionally significant. Before activating a service, identify the account owner and the exact shutdown route. Save only records you are entitled to keep, request deletion of source files and derived data, and ask how backups and model-training artifacts are handled. If several relatives use the bot, agree who can authorize retirement and how others will be notified.
A pause can be appropriate when you are uncertain, while permanent deletion may be preferable when the service increases distress or the provider cannot explain its data practices. A sensitive retirement process should acknowledge the relationship without suggesting that the software is a living person.

Bottom line on safety
AI griefbots are generated simulations with unresolved consent, privacy and emotional-governance problems. The evidence does not justify calling them universally safe or universally harmful. Treat any service as high sensitivity: verify authority over the data, insist on unmistakable AI disclosure, demand lifecycle-level privacy controls, avoid dependency-promoting design and retain a genuine option to pause or retire the bot. Small early studies and ethics analyses support those precautions while leaving clinical outcomes for different users unsettled.
