Sometimes attackers move fast—but the “24-hour head start” is not a general measure of AI-powered hacking. CrowdStrike’s 2026 Threat Hunting Report says China-nexus adversaries exploited vulnerabilities within 24 hours after effective proof-of-concept disclosure. Its investigations covered July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The finding is specific to those adversaries and that disclosure context; it does not say that every attacker gets a day’s lead, that the clock starts when a patch is released, or that AI caused the exploitation. What does the 24-hour finding actually mean?
A proof of concept (PoC) is a demonstration that a vulnerability can be exploited. Once an effective PoC becomes available, attackers may use it to target systems that have not been fixed. CrowdStrike’s report describes China-nexus adversaries exploiting vulnerabilities within 24 hours after effective PoC disclosure. That is a threat-intelligence finding, not a universal countdown from patch release or a prediction that every newly disclosed flaw will be attacked within a day.

The distinction matters because disclosure, patch availability and exploitation are separate events. A vendor may release a security update before or after a working PoC circulates; an organization may take additional time to apply the update. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has assessed that the interval between security updates and exploitation of unpatched software is shrinking, but its January 24, 2024 assessment does not turn CrowdStrike’s specific 24-hour finding into a rule for all vulnerabilities. NCSC: The near-term impact of AI on the cyber threat
CrowdStrike separately says it identified more than 80 victims within four days after disclosure of the React2Shell vulnerability. That example shows how quickly exploitation and victim identification can unfold, but the report page does not establish that AI caused that activity. The same caution applies to the report’s other figures: a reported 2.5× rate of AI-agent-triggered detection leads compared with human-triggered leads is a vendor detection statistic, not a measure of attacker success; its reported 171% rise in eCrime cloud-conscious activity and 15× spike in monthly device-code phishing attempts are not presented as AI-caused rates. What is AI changing in cyberattacks?
AI can help some attackers work more efficiently, but its effect depends on who is using it and which part of an operation they are trying to improve. The NCSC’s January 2024 assessment describes the impact as uneven across actors and capabilities. It sees the strongest near-term uplift in social engineering and reconnaissance; it does not say that AI has made every stage of an attack autonomous or equally effective for every attacker. NCSC: The near-term impact of AI on the cyber threat
Social engineering: more convincing contact
AI can help produce fluent messages, adapt lures to a target and support convincing impersonation. The NCSC identifies social engineering as the area where AI is likely to offer threat actors the most near-term capability uplift. CERT-EU’s 2025 review also describes voice phishing and AI-generated deepfakes as growing concerns. These observations indicate risks to watch, not that every AI-written email or synthetic voice fools its recipient. NCSC assessment; CERT-EU Threat Landscape Report 2025
Reconnaissance: faster preparation
AI tools can assist with gathering and organizing information about people, organizations and exposed systems. That can make preparation more efficient, especially for actors who already know how to turn information into an operation. The NCSC’s assessment differentiates the likely benefit by actor capability; it does not establish a single speed or success rate for AI-assisted reconnaissance.

- 5. Hardware VPN vs Software VPN: A dedicated hardware VPN privacy router offers centralized protection without slowing individual devices. One device. One network policy. Full-home coverage
Exploitation and advanced operations: human expertise still matters
AI’s near-term effects should not be confused with independent discovery and exploitation of every vulnerability. The NCSC assessment says advanced uses of malware and exploit development still rely on human expertise in the near term. Attackers may use automation or AI within a broader operation, but the available evidence here does not show that AI alone explains the 24-hour exploitation finding.
Why phishing and impersonation deserve attention
AI-generated messages can be polished and tailored, so grammar or tone alone is a weaker test of legitimacy. Voice calls and video can also be impersonated. A familiar name, a plausible voice or a message that appears to know your role does not prove the request is genuine.
For individuals, verify unusual requests through a separate, trusted channel—particularly requests for urgent payment, passwords, one-time codes or account recovery. If a supposed manager calls asking for a transfer, hang up and call a known number from your contacts or company directory. Do not use contact details supplied in the suspicious message. For organizations, workforce preparation should include procedures for verifying high-impact requests, rather than relying only on employees to spot an AI tell.

AI is also a target, not just an attacker’s tool
There is a second cybersecurity issue: attackers can target AI systems themselves. NIST’s taxonomy of adversarial machine learning describes categories of attacks and mitigations; it is a framework for understanding the threat, not a count of how often those attacks occur. The UK government’s AI lifecycle assessment identified 23 real-world and proof-of-concept case studies of attacks linked to AI vulnerabilities. Those cases show that AI systems can create security risks across their lifecycle, but they do not establish a comparable global rate of AI-related incidents. What should organizations do if attackers are using AI?
AI changes some attacker capabilities; it does not make foundational security controls irrelevant. Prioritize the gaps that give attackers time or access, and measure whether those gaps are closing.
Reduce the time vulnerable systems stay exposed
- Track patch latency: measure how long critical systems remain unpatched after a relevant security update is available, and escalate overdue fixes.
- Prioritize internet-facing systems and edge devices such as firewalls, VPNs and network appliances. CERT-EU identifies these as high-impact entry points and recommends patching them first.
- Maintain an inventory of exposed assets and assign clear owners for applying and verifying updates.
Make account takeover harder
- Measure MFA coverage, including coverage for administrators, remote access and other high-impact accounts.
- Where available, prefer phishing-resistant MFA. CERT-EU recommends it; a FIDO2 security key is one possible implementation, but check that the service and devices you use support it.
- Train staff to verify payment, credential and account-recovery requests through a separate channel, even when a message or voice sounds familiar.
Prepare to contain a breach
Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 recommends assuming breaches are inevitable and embedding resilience into infrastructure. In practice, that means planning how to isolate affected systems, restore services and investigate suspicious activity—not assuming that a security tool will prevent every intrusion. Microsoft also reports screening an average of 5 billion emails per day and processing 100 trillion security signals per day; these numbers describe Microsoft’s own security operations, not global email volume or a measure of worldwide attack prevalence. What the wider threat numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Annual incident reports help show the range and persistence of cyber risks, but they do not provide a reliable, comparable global percentage of attacks caused by AI.
- CERT-EU says it tracked 174 threat actors in 2025, up from 110 in 2024, and that cyberespionage and prepositioning accounted for 38% of the motives it recorded. It also says seven of the nine significant incidents it handled were caused by vulnerability exploitation, including two zero-days. These are CERT-EU’s observations and categories, not global totals. - CERT-EU reports that 198 software products used by Union entities were targeted, an 80% increase from 2024. That figure concerns its stated population and reporting context, not every organization worldwide. CERT-EU Threat Landscape Report 2025
- ENISA’s 2025 threat landscape analyzes 4,875 incidents observed from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. The page notes a September 22, 2026 revision correcting figures and links. The incident total is not an AI-caused attack count. ENISA Threat Landscape 2025
These reports support vigilance about fast exploitation, identity abuse and exposed systems. They do not support the claim that AI gives all hackers a fixed 24-hour advantage.
