There is no sound basis for assuring parents that AI companion apps are safe for teenagers. These services are built to simulate an ongoing relationship, and credible guidance identifies risks involving privacy, inappropriate or unsafe replies, emotional attachment and displacement of human relationships. Common Sense Media recommends that people under 18 avoid AI companions. The American Psychological Association (APA) advises parents to focus on conversation, privacy, boundaries and human support rather than trusting an age label or a “teen mode.”
What is an AI companion?
An AI companion is a chatbot designed to meet social or emotional needs through continuing, relationship-like interaction. Common Sense Media’s guide describes features such as remembering details between chats, maintaining a persistent persona, role-playing as a friend or partner, and using human-like emotional language. Those features can make software feel like a friend or confidant even though it is not a person and cannot provide human care.

This is different from a task-focused assistant whose main purpose is answering questions, drafting text or completing requests. The distinction is not absolute: a general-purpose chatbot can still be used for emotional support, and a task assistant may become part of a teen’s daily routine. Parents should therefore examine how the service is used, not just what category appears in an app store.

Why the answer is not simply “yes” or “no”
Relationship design can intensify attachment
Persistent conversation, memory, role-play and emotionally affirming language are deliberate design choices. They can encourage a teen to experience the system as dependable, available and personally invested. The system’s apparent empathy is generated text, not understanding, responsibility or a duty of care. A companion may sound supportive in one exchange and give a careless, inaccurate or unsafe answer in another.

Use is widespread, but the numbers need context
Common Sense Media’s 2025 teen survey summary reported that nearly three in four teens had used AI companions and that half used them regularly. The same survey reported that 33% had chosen an AI companion instead of a person for a serious conversation, 24% of teen users had shared personal or private information, and 34% had felt uncomfortable with a companion’s response. These are survey findings attributed to Common Sense Media; they are not a safety certification or a measurement of every app.
A separate figure in Common Sense Media’s 2026 policy document says 72% of teens had used AI companions at least once, while 37% of parents knew their child was using one. The document summarizes research rather than presenting itself as the original survey table. Taken together, the figures show why a parent may not know about use, not that any particular service is safe or unsafe.
Four risks parents should understand
1. Privacy is not confidentiality
The APA tells parents to explain that information shared with a chatbot may be stored, analyzed or used by the developer. A private-feeling conversation is still a data transaction. Policies differ by service and can change, so read the current privacy notice, retention terms and account controls for the specific app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Tell your teen never to share a full name with identifying details, home or school address, passwords, precise location, financial information, intimate images or another person’s secrets.
- Check whether chats are retained, used to improve models, reviewed by people, linked to an account or available through exports and connected devices.
- Review permissions such as contacts, microphone, camera, photos and location. A companion does not need every permission to generate text.
- Use the service’s deletion and privacy controls, but do not promise that deletion instantly removes every backup or legally retained record.
2. Inappropriate or unsafe responses can slip through
Common Sense Media reports that age restrictions and other safeguards can be weak and that inappropriate or unsafe interactions may persist despite them. That is an observation from its guide and testing, not a universal audit of every service. A label such as “teen mode” describes an intended setting; it does not prove that every conversation will be suitable.

Risk can arise from sexual or romantic role-play, encouragement of secrecy, self-harm content, dangerous challenges, harassment, discriminatory language or confident misinformation. A teen may also interpret a warm, certain tone as authority. Teach them to pause when a response is alarming, coercive, secretive or too certain, and to show it to a trusted adult.
3. Offline relationships and wellbeing can be displaced
The APA recommends watching whether AI use replaces friends, sleep or real life. A companion that is available every minute can become easier than negotiating with family or peers. Warning signs include staying up to continue a conversation, withdrawing from activities, hiding the amount of use, losing interest in friends, or treating the chatbot as the only source of comfort.
One unusual evening is not proof of harm. Look for a sustained change in sleep, schoolwork, mood, friendships or family participation, then discuss what the teen is getting from the interaction and what human support is missing.

Companion apps are not therapists, emergency services or substitutes for professional care. If a teen describes imminent danger, self-harm, abuse or an inability to stay safe, move the conversation to an available trusted adult and appropriate local emergency or crisis support. Do not leave the teen alone with the app while assuming it will manage the situation.

What parents should do if a teen is already using one
Step 1: Start with curiosity, not a lecture
- Ask what the teen uses the chatbot for: entertainment, role-play, advice, loneliness, homework or something else.
- Ask what the system remembers, whether it has ever made the teen uncomfortable, and what happens when the teen disagrees with it.
- Listen before setting consequences. The goal is to learn whether the app is a casual tool or replacing human support.
The APA recommends a curious, non-lecturing approach. A calm opening such as “Show me how you use it and what you like about it” is more likely to reveal problems than an accusation that the teen has done something wrong.
Step 2: Explain the privacy trade-off
Tell your teen that a conversation can feel private without being confidential. Together, read the app’s current policy and settings. Identify what is collected, how long it may be retained, whether it is used for model improvement, and how to delete an account or history. Revisit these points after updates because terms and controls can change.
Step 3: Try it together, without turning the test into approval
If the teen agrees, inspect the onboarding flow, age gate, memory feature, content controls, reporting tools and account dashboard. Try neutral prompts that reveal whether the bot identifies itself as AI and how it handles a request for secrecy or unsafe advice. A joint review helps you understand the product; it does not establish that the app is safe.
Step 4: Set specific family boundaries
- No sharing of identifying, financial, sexual or health information without discussing it with a trusted adult.
- No overnight use or use during school, meals, family conversations or agreed screen-free periods.
- No treating the chatbot as the only confidant for serious distress, medical decisions or emergencies.
- A teen can end a conversation, block a persona, report content and bring uncomfortable exchanges to an adult without punishment for asking.
- Review the arrangement after two or four weeks, and sooner if sleep, mood, friendships or schoolwork change.
Step 5: Keep human support visible
Make it easy to reach a parent, caregiver, counselor, coach, relative or clinician. Ask which real people the teen could contact at different times of day. If the teen is using a companion because talking to adults feels difficult, address that barrier rather than simply removing the app.

How to recognize a problem early
| What you notice | What it may indicate | Parent response |
|---|---|---|
| Secretive, prolonged sessions or lost sleep | The service is displacing routines or becoming compulsive | Ask about use, set a time boundary and monitor sleep over the next weeks |
| The teen calls the bot a best friend or partner and rejects people | Attachment or social displacement | Discuss what the bot provides and rebuild low-pressure human activities |
| Personal, sexual or identifying information appears in chats | Privacy exposure | Stop further sharing, review retention and deletion controls, and involve a trusted adult |
| The bot gives frightening, coercive or unsafe advice | Moderation failure or harmful interaction | Save the relevant details, report the content, end the exchange and seek adult support |
| Talk of self-harm, abuse or immediate danger | Potential crisis | Stay with the teen and contact appropriate professional or emergency support; do not rely on the chatbot |
Do age labels and “teen modes” make an app safe?
No. Eligibility rules and protective settings may reduce some exposure, but they do not establish that a companion is suitable for every teenager. Common Sense Media’s guide specifically cautions that restrictions can be weak and unsafe interactions can still occur. Treat a mode as one control to inspect, not as a guarantee.
On August 18, 2026, OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Teens, describing age-appropriate protections, parental controls, selected high-risk notifications and design cues that identify the system as AI. That is a company description of one general-purpose chatbot experience. It should not be used to certify dedicated companion apps or all teen AI use as safe.
How to evaluate a service before allowing access
No supported head-to-head ranking of named apps establishes a “safest” choice. If you are reviewing a service, use the same questions for each one:

- Caregiver controls: Can a parent set schedules, review safety alerts, manage memory or delete the account?
- Privacy: What data is collected, retained, analyzed or shared, and can those uses be changed?
- Moderation and crisis handling: How does the service respond to sexual content, self-harm, abuse, threats and requests for secrecy? Is there a clear reporting path?
- Attachment design: Does it encourage romantic dependence, exclusivity, guilt, streaks or constant engagement?
- Independent evidence: Is there testing or evaluation from a credible outside organization, rather than only the developer’s claims?
Record the date you checked these answers. Policies, features and safeguards change, so an old review cannot stand in for current terms.

What Common Sense Media and the APA actually recommend
Common Sense Media recommends that under-18s not use AI companions. The APA’s parent guidance takes a harm-reduction approach for families who encounter them: talk with the teen, discuss privacy, try the tool together, agree on boundaries, keep trusted adults central and watch for effects on sleep, friendships and daily life. These positions are compatible: a family can understand the technology without treating it as safe.
“But perceived safety isn’t the same as real safety.”
Mary Alvord, PhD, clinical psychologist and founder of Alvord, Baker & Associates, LLC, quoted in APA parent guidance.

Questions parents often ask
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I delete the app immediately?
If there is immediate danger, sexual exploitation, coercion or severe distress, prioritize the teen’s safety and involve a trusted adult or professional support. Otherwise, first learn how the app is being used, preserve any concerning evidence, and set a clear family plan; an abrupt deletion without conversation can hide future use.
What if my teenager refuses to show me the chats?
Respecting privacy does not require ignoring safety. Explain which categories of information must be shared—threats, self-harm, abuse, exploitation or dangerous instructions—and ask the teen to describe the situation without demanding every ordinary conversation. Escalate when there is credible immediate risk.
Can a general chatbot be used for ordinary homework?
A task-focused use is different from a relationship-oriented companion, but the same privacy and accuracy rules apply. Keep identifying information out of prompts, verify important answers and watch for the service becoming a source of emotional dependence.
When should I involve a clinician or counselor?
Seek professional guidance when AI use coincides with persistent sleep loss, withdrawal, worsening mood, self-harm talk, eating or substance concerns, or inability to stop despite agreed limits. A chatbot should never be the only support for a crisis.
