AI coding agents can be used with private code, but they are not automatically safe—and no brand name alone tells you whether a particular setup is suitable. Check the data terms for the exact plan and model, then limit what the agent can read and do. Keep production credentials out of development agents, isolate execution where possible, and require review and the usual security checks before code is merged or deployed.
What makes an AI coding agent different from code completion?
A code-completion feature that returns a suggestion has a different risk profile from an agent that can read repository files, use tools, run commands, or change files. The more authority an agent has, the more damage a mistake or malicious instruction could cause. GitHub notes that its agent features can differ in execution environment, permissions, and data flows; VS Code documents workspace-limited file access and per-session permission controls, including modes that can auto-approve actions.
Repository content is not automatically trustworthy. A prompt injection hidden in a file, issue, or tool result might try to redirect an agent. The risk depends in part on what the agent can reach: access restrictions and external authorization checks matter more than a natural-language instruction telling it to behave. OWASP identifies prompt injection, excessive autonomy, sensitive-data exposure, and supply-chain attacks among agent-security risks. See the GitHub Copilot agents documentation, VS Code agent security documentation, and OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.
Will an AI coding agent train on private code?
There is no single answer for every product or account. Training use and data retention are separate questions: a provider may say it does not train on certain data while still having retention, feedback, abuse-monitoring, or safety-review terms. Check the current terms for the exact plan, model, settings, and contract before sharing sensitive code.

| Service and scope described in the cited policy | Training position described | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI business products and API platform | OpenAI says it does not use business and API data for training by default. Its business data policy describes listed products and the API platform. | Whether the product and account fall within that scope, and which retention controls are available and enabled. Retention settings are not stated here as one universal duration. |
| GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise | GitHub says Business and Enterprise customer data is not used to train its AI models. | Confirm the account’s plan, model, hosting and current data-handling terms in GitHub’s model-hosting documentation; availability and retention arrangements can vary by model. |
| Individual GitHub Copilot subscribers | GitHub says interaction data may be used under the stated policy and settings. | Review the account’s settings and the applicable policy rather than assuming Business or Enterprise terms apply. |
| Anthropic consumer products | Anthropic’s cited consumer policy describes circumstances in which consumer chat and coding sessions may be used to improve models. | This policy is for consumer products. It does not establish Claude for Work or API terms; consult their separate current terms. See Anthropic’s consumer data-use policy. |
These are provider policy statements, not proof that every integration has identical data flows or that a particular organization has enabled every available control. For example, “no training” does not by itself answer where code is processed, how long it is retained, or who can access it.
Can you use Claude Code, Codex, or Copilot with a private repository?
Possibly, if the specific product configuration and your organization’s rules permit it. Assess the actual agent path rather than treating a product family as one uniform service: a feature may run locally, in a separate worktree, in a sandbox, or in a remote environment, with different permissions and data flows. Confirm the selected plan and model’s terms, the files and tools the agent can access, and the credentials and host resources available to its execution environment.

For an organization, security, privacy, and legal stakeholders should check applicable service terms and obligations before sensitive code is exposed. Also consider where code and prompts are processed or stored, whether regional controls are available and enabled, and whether administrators can manage identity, access, retention, and audit records to meet policy.
How do you keep an agent away from secrets and limit the damage it can do?
Give the agent only the access needed for its task. OWASP’s secure-coding guidance says not to give development agents access to production credentials, deployment keys, or organization-level secrets, and recommends isolated CI agents without production secrets. Apply that principle to credentials, repositories, tools, commands, network destinations, and write permissions.

- Use task-scoped, revocable access; avoid passing a developer’s broad interactive credentials to an agent where separate credentials are feasible.
- Keep production secrets and deployment credentials out of development environments. Any exception should have a documented, tightly scoped need and controls.
- Prefer a sandbox or isolated worktree where available, and restrict network access and command execution to approved needs.
- Require explicit approval for consequential actions such as deployments, permission changes, destructive operations, and external publication. Check that the approval request shows the action and its scope.
These controls reduce exposure; they do not make an agent incapable of error or eliminate every route to sensitive data. OWASP’s recommendations are in its Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet.
Should an AI coding agent be allowed to deploy to production?
Do not treat an agent’s ability to generate or change code as authority to release it. A safer separation is to let an agent propose a change while a responsible human reviews it and an existing release process controls whether it ships. Avoid putting production credentials in a development agent’s reach; require an accountable person to approve deployments and other consequential actions.

Review every proposed diff and apply the same project-specific tests, code review, and release gates used for other changes. Log the agent identity, model or version where available, tool actions, approvals, and the human who accepted the change. OWASP recommends a human owner and explicit review and approval before merge; the OWASP secure-coding guidance covers these practices.

- Data terms: Do the terms for this plan and model cover prompts, source code, and outputs? What retention, feedback, abuse-monitoring, and safety-review rules apply?
- Access and authority: Which repositories, files, tools, commands, network destinations, and MCP servers can the agent reach? Are permissions read-only or write-enabled, limited to the task, and revocable?
- Execution boundary: Does the work run locally, in a separate worktree, in a sandbox, or in a remote cloud environment? Which host resources and credentials are inherited?
- Approvals and accountability: Which actions require approval, and can settings auto-approve tool calls or commands? Who reviews the diff and authorizes a merge or deployment?
- Detection and validation: Are tool activity and decisions logged? Do tests, code scanning, secret scanning, dependency checks, and normal release gates apply to agent-generated changes?
- Governance fit: Can administrators control availability, identity, access, retention, and audit records in line with organizational policy?
Start with a low-risk repository or read-only task, then grant only the files and tools needed. Recheck the setup when a provider changes data terms, models, hosting, agent tools, or permission defaults. Sandboxing, approvals, logs, and scanning are useful controls, not guarantees; confirm they are enabled and apply to the precise agent path. OpenAI describes Codex controls such as an enterprise workspace boundary, sandboxing, and agent-aware telemetry in its Codex safety overview. GitHub describes scanning agent-generated changes with CodeQL, secret scanning, and dependency checks for third-party coding agents in its third-party coding agents documentation. Neither description establishes that every customer has enabled a control or that it applies to every integration.
