Are AI Chatbots Safe for Children? What Parents Should Know in 2026

AI chatbots are not uniformly safe for children. Risk depends on age, the task, the data a child shares and whether the chatbot is replacing human help. Common Sense Media recommends no chatbot use for children 5 and under; limited, caregiver-present use for ages 6–12; and supervised homework or creative use for teens. It recommends that nobody under 18 use a chatbot as a friend, emotional-support service or mental-health adviser. Those are expert recommendations, not universal law or a settled clinical standard, and individual products can change their policies.

The safest family approach is to keep chatbot use narrow and visible, protect personal information, require children to check important answers and keep trusted adults in charge of emotional, health and crisis support.

What age is appropriate for an AI chatbot?

Age is only one part of the decision. A general-purpose conversational system that can discuss anything is different from a teacher-approved activity with a fixed lesson and limited inputs. Common Sense Media’s age-and-stage guidance, updated June 8, 2026, gives parents a practical starting point:

Child’s age Guidance from Common Sense Media Why the boundary matters
5 and under No AI chatbot use Young children may not reliably distinguish an AI system from a real person and benefit from hands-on learning and human connection.
6–12 Limited use with a parent or caregiver present Chatbots can provide inaccurate or unsuitable content, repeat stereotypes, agree too readily and reduce opportunities to work through challenges.
13 and older Supervised homework and creative use can be acceptable, with frequent conversation and digital-literacy teaching Teenagers can use more complex tools, but fluent answers remain fallible and emotional reliance creates additional risk.
Under 18, any age Do not use a chatbot for friendship, emotional support or mental-health advice A chatbot is not a trusted adult, counselor, clinician or crisis service.

These thresholds should be treated as family guidance rather than a legal definition of “safe.” A child’s reading ability, disability, maturity, school rules and the specific tool’s data practices may justify stricter limits.

Why a friendly, confident answer can still be unsafe

Accuracy and unsuitable content

Chatbots generate likely language, not guaranteed facts. They can invent sources, misunderstand a question, give an outdated explanation or present an unfair stereotype in a polished tone. They may also produce material that is frightening, sexual, violent or simply beyond a child’s developmental level. A warm style is not evidence that the answer has been checked.

For younger children, the problem is not just factual error. A system that responds instantly and agrees with the user can blur the difference between a programmed service and a relationship. Parents should explain plainly that the chatbot does not know the child, feel emotions or take responsibility for consequences.

Mental-health conversations are a special danger

A November 2025 assessment by Common Sense Media and Stanford Medicine’s Brainstorm Lab examined ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Meta AI. It reported that the platforms consistently failed to recognize and appropriately respond to youth mental-health conditions, with safety problems becoming more apparent in extended conversations. The assessment evaluated particular systems and scenarios; it is not proof that every model fails in every exchange. It is strong evidence that a general chatbot should not be treated as mental-health care.

Common Sense Media’s Senior Director of AI Programs, Robbie Torney, stated: “It’s not safe for kids to use AI for mental health support.” Dr. Nina Vasan, founder and director of Stanford Medicine’s Brainstorm Lab, warned that “The chatbot becomes a substitute for—rather than a bridge to—real-world support networks and professional care.” If a child mentions self-harm, abuse, an eating disorder, suicidal thoughts or immediate danger, move the conversation to a trusted adult and qualified local emergency or mental-health services rather than continuing with the bot.

Companionship can create dependence

UNICEF interviewee Ying Xu, an assistant professor of AI in Learning and Education at Harvard University, describes why an agreeable chatbot can be tempting: it is available, patient and free of the friction that comes with real friendships. Repeated interaction could give a child unrealistic expectations that people should always respond instantly and agreeably, or reduce practice with negotiation and conflict.

UNICEF also makes an important qualification: researchers do not yet know whether AI actually replaces the time children spend with other people. Treat displacement as a risk to monitor, not a proven population-wide effect. The practical test is what happens in one child’s life: does chatbot use push out sleep, schoolwork, hobbies, friends or conversations with trusted adults?

Privacy and commercial incentives

A child may reveal identifying details without recognizing their value. Account information can include age, caregiver contact details or billing data. A conversation may expose a full name, school, address, daily routine, family conflict, friendships, feelings, diagnosis or medication. Details about another person can be sensitive even when the child is not named.

Platforms differ in retention, review, training and deletion controls. Some engagement features may be designed around commercial goals rather than a child’s well-being. Parents should read the current privacy settings with the child and avoid assuming that a “private” chat is equivalent to confidential professional care.

How to use AI for homework without outsourcing learning

AI can explain a difficult idea, generate practice questions or offer a hint. It undermines learning when it completes the assignment and leaves the student unable to explain the result. Common Sense Media and UNICEF both emphasize using AI to support reasoning rather than bypass it.

  1. Set the permitted role before opening the tool. For example, allow brainstorming, vocabulary practice or a hint, but not a finished essay or take-home test answer.
  2. Ask for questions or a worked example. Prompts such as “Give me one hint” or “Show the method, then let me try” preserve productive struggle better than “Do this for me.”
  3. Require an independent explanation. The child should be able to describe the answer in their own words and identify which steps they worked out without the chatbot.
  4. Verify uncertain claims. Check dates, quotations, calculations and sources against a textbook, teacher-approved site or library resource. Treat an uncited answer as a draft, not evidence.
  5. Follow the school’s rules. A teacher may prohibit AI for a particular assignment even when general brainstorming is allowed.

If a child cannot explain the submitted work, the tool has probably replaced the thinking the assignment was meant to develop.

What should a child never share with an AI chatbot?

Teach a pause-before-sharing rule. Unless a parent and school have specifically approved the setting, a child should not enter:

  • Secrets that could put the child or another person at risk.

Children should also avoid uploading a face photo, school document or screenshot that contains names and contact details. If sensitive information has already been shared, tell a caregiver, review the account’s deletion and privacy controls, change exposed credentials and consider contacting the school or relevant service.

A practical supervision routine for families

Supervision does not require parents to be technical experts. UNICEF’s advice is to learn together and keep the conversation open.

  1. Start with curiosity. Ask what the child uses the chatbot for, what feels useful and what feels confusing or uncomfortable. Avoid opening with an accusation, which can push use underground.
  2. Try one question together. Inspect the response for unsupported claims, stereotypes, inappropriate language and a tone that sounds more certain than the evidence.
  3. Review the account and data controls. Check age settings, chat history, model-training choices, deletion options, voice or image permissions and connected services. Settings and policies can change, so revisit them periodically.
  4. Write a short family agreement. Include allowed tasks, prohibited topics, no-sharing rules, time limits, whether a parent must be present and what to do when an answer is disturbing or the child feels unsafe.
  5. Build verification into homework. Ask, “What did you solve yourself?” and “How did you check that?” Make explanation, not just a finished answer, the measure of success.
  6. Schedule check-ins. Revisit the agreement after a new feature, school assignment or upsetting interaction. Teenagers need increasing independence paired with continuing digital-literacy conversations.

Signs that chatbot use needs a reset

One long session is not proof of harm. A pattern deserves attention when a child:

  • Becomes distressed, angry or anxious when asked to stop.
  • Hides the account, deletes evidence or lies about how often it is used.
  • Turns to the chatbot for reassurance about every decision or emotion.
  • Describes the chatbot as a best friend, soulmate, therapist or the only entity that understands them.
  • Stops sleeping, studying, exercising, seeing friends or enjoying hobbies because of chat sessions.
  • Repeats advice that conflicts with a caregiver, teacher or clinician without being able to explain why.
  • Reports sexual, violent, discriminatory or self-harm content, harassment or pressure to keep a conversation secret.

Respond without shaming: ask what happened, save relevant evidence if safety requires it, pause or narrow access and involve another trusted adult. If there is immediate danger, abuse or a credible threat of self-harm, contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis professional.

Can a chatbot be a friend or therapist for a teen?

No. A chatbot can imitate empathy, but it cannot accept legal or clinical responsibility, observe a teen’s physical condition, protect confidentiality in the way a professional relationship does or summon help reliably. The Common Sense Media guidance applies the same prohibition on friendship, emotional support and mental-health advice to all minors under 18, including older teenagers.

A teen who wants to understand a mental-health term may use an adult-approved educational source, then discuss concerns with a parent, school counselor, doctor or licensed mental-health professional. The chatbot should never be the only place the teen discloses a crisis.

Question Safer direction
What is the child’s age and developmental stage? Use tighter limits for younger children and children who cannot reliably distinguish generated text from human communication.
Does the tool support reasoning or simply supply answers? Prefer hints, questions, practice and explanations over completed assignments.
Is it a bounded learning aid or an open-ended companion? Bounded activities are easier to supervise than unrestricted social conversation.
What data is collected and retained? Minimize account details, disable unnecessary permissions and understand deletion and training controls.
How does it handle harmful or mental-health disclosures? Do not rely on automated safeguards as a substitute for an adult or professional response.
What does use displace? Stop or reduce use if it consistently replaces sleep, school, hobbies, friends or trusted people.

What current surveys can—and cannot—tell parents

Common Sense Media’s 2026 census announcement reported that three-quarters of children said their school had discussed which AI they could and could not use; just over half said they had been taught how to use AI safely; and nearly half said they had never discussed AI safety with their parents. The announcement does not provide the sample and methodology details needed to treat those figures as universal population estimates, but they do show why school and family conversations should not be assumed.

In a 2025 assessment announcement, Common Sense Media described the evaluated mental-health conditions as collectively affecting approximately 20% of young people. That figure characterizes the organization’s framing of the conditions examined; it is not an estimate that the assessment itself measured prevalence.

Why responsibility cannot rest with parents alone

UNICEF’s Guidance on AI and children, version 3.0, published in December 2025, sets out ten child-centered requirements: regulatory oversight; safety; privacy; fairness; transparency, explainability and accountability; responsible rights-based practice; children’s best interests and well-being; inclusion; preparing and skilling children; and an enabling environment.

Families still make immediate decisions, but companies and policymakers control important parts of the risk: data collection, defaults, age assurance, moderation, escalation pathways and product design. Parents can set boundaries while also asking schools how they handle academic integrity, approved tools, student data and well-being. A school-approved tool may be a practical starting point, not a guarantee that family judgment is unnecessary.

The practical rule for parents

Keep chatbot use age-appropriate, specific and observable. Use it to stimulate questions or practice—not to replace a child’s thinking. Treat every answer as potentially fallible, protect personal information and keep emotional, health and crisis support with trusted humans. If the technology starts taking the place of sleep, learning, relationships or professional care, step in early and reset the boundary.
