Yes. Adders are venomous, and any suspected bite needs urgent professional help: call 999 or go to A&E for a person, and contact a vet urgently for a dog or cat. Keep the bitten person or animal still, do not handle the snake, and do not wait for severe symptoms to appear.
What makes an adder bite urgent?
The adder is the only venomous snake found in the wild in the UK. The NHS describes it as grey or reddish-brown, with a dark zigzag stripe along its back. The NHS also advises getting all snake bites checked as soon as possible, whether or not the snake was identified. NHS guidance on snake bites was last reviewed on 17 July 2026.

Do not approach, catch or kill a snake to identify it or take a photograph. If you can safely remember its appearance or take a picture from a distance, that may help clinicians, but your safety comes first.
If a person may have been bitten

Do not cut the bite, suck out venom, tie a tight bandage or ligature around the bitten part, or go near the snake. The RSPCA also advises keeping the limb still and going to A&E; it says to call an ambulance if the person loses consciousness. Hospital observation is usually at least 24 hours. Treatment may include wound care, tetanus protection and antivenom for a venomous bite. RSPCA advice on living with reptiles provides additional guidance.
If a dog or cat may have been bitten
Contact a veterinary practice urgently and arrange an examination, even if the animal seems well. Keep the pet quiet and still, leave the bite alone, and tell the vet you are coming. For a dog, PDSA advises carrying it or bringing the car to it if practical, to minimise movement. Do not apply a bandage or tourniquet, search for the snake, or try home treatment instead of veterinary care. The RSPCA’s advice applies to pets generally: a suspected bite needs urgent veterinary examination.

How to reduce the chance of an encounter
Adders should be left alone. Keep children and pets away if you see one, and do not try to move it. PDSA identifies long grass, woodland, moorland and coastal areas such as sand dunes or coastal paths as places where adders are commonly found. Its guidance says adders are active from February to October and dog bites are especially common from June to August; these are seasonal observations, not a guarantee that encounters cannot happen at other times. PDSA’s dog guidance also says bites commonly affect the face, neck or lower leg.
