Arduino Telephone Caller ID Unit: How It Works and What You Need

The Arduino Telephone Caller ID Unit is a DIY display built around an Arduino UNO, a custom HT9032D decoder module and a 16×2 HD44780 LCD. It is designed to show caller information sent over an analog telephone line, but whether it works depends on the caller ID signaling and service used by the local telephone provider.

What the Arduino Telephone Caller ID Unit does

The project connects an analog telephone line to a custom HT9032D module, which decodes caller ID signaling for an Arduino UNO. The Arduino sketch sends the received details to a 16×2 character LCD. The project author describes the display as showing the telephone number and the date and time supplied by the exchange. The project repository includes the sketch and module design files, and points to schematics and Gerber files in its release: project repository.

How caller ID decoding works in this design

Caller ID information is transmitted as audio-frequency shift keying (AFSK) data on an analog telephone connection. The decoder module receives that signaling and makes message data available for the Arduino to process. The project documentation describes the module as supporting Bellcore 202 and ETSI V.23 AFSK, ring detection, and parsing of SDMF and MDMF Caller ID and message-waiting data (module documentation).

That module-level description should not be confused with the sketch’s documented capabilities. The project README says the current sketch handles MDMF packet IDs for caller line identification, name, and date/time; it does not say that the sketch handles every message type the module can parse (project repository).

Will it work on your telephone line?

Compatibility is not universal. Caller ID service availability, signaling format and timing vary by operator and region. The project discussion describes testing on a Swiss network and notes that differences can affect operation elsewhere (project repository; project discussion).

Before building or connecting the unit, check whether caller ID is enabled on the intended line and determine which signaling protocol and message format the provider uses. Then compare those details with the module’s Bellcore 202 or ETSI V.23 support and the sketch’s documented MDMF handling. The available project information does not establish compatibility with every provider or network.

What to check before adapting the design

  • Signaling: Confirm whether the telephone provider uses Bellcore 202 or ETSI V.23, and account for any region-specific timing differences.
  • Message format: Check whether the line sends SDMF or MDMF data. The module documentation lists both, while the sketch description specifically identifies MDMF caller ID, name and date/time packet handling.
  • Service: Verify that caller ID is active on the line; a decoder cannot display information that the provider does not send.
  • Ring detection: The project PDF gives a ring-detection range of 17 to 70 Hz above voice voltage levels. Treat this as a specification of this project’s documentation, not a general telephone-network standard (module documentation).

Telephone-line safety

A live telephone line can expose connected equipment to hazardous voltage. An Arduino Forum test-tool post cautions that ring voltage may exceed 90 V AC and specifically warns against connecting a PC directly to a live telephone line (forum safety discussion). That figure is the forum author’s caution, not a universal line-voltage specification or a complete safety standard.

Check local provider requirements and applicable connection rules before attaching homemade electronics to a telephone line. The available project sources do not establish certification for all networks or jurisdictions.
