The Arduino MKR Vidor 4000 is a specialist maker board that combines an Intel Cyclone 10CL016 FPGA with an Arm Cortex-M0 SAMD21 microcontroller. That pairing lets a project use Arduino-style firmware for control and connectivity while programmable logic handles hardware-level, parallel or timing-sensitive work. It also includes Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, Micro HDMI and a MIPI camera connector. However, Arduino currently labels the board End of Life, so confirm availability, condition, accessories and documentation before building a new project around it.
What makes the MKR Vidor 4000 different?
Most Arduino boards center on a microcontroller running sequential firmware. The Vidor 4000 adds an FPGA: configurable digital hardware that can implement parallel logic and dedicated hardware functions alongside the SAMD21 microcontroller. Arduino describes it as the only MKR-family board with an FPGA.

| Part or connector | Role in a project |
|---|---|
| Intel Cyclone 10CL016 FPGA | Programmable logic for parallel, deterministic or custom hardware functions. |
| Arm Cortex-M0 SAMD21 | Arduino-style application firmware, control flow and peripheral management. |
| NINA-W102 module | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. |
| Micro HDMI connector | Video-output projects that use the board’s supported FPGA design. |

The FPGA does not turn the board into a faster general-purpose Arduino by itself. You must create or load an FPGA design, establish how that design communicates with the SAMD21, and account for the board’s pin assignments and electrical limits.
How the FPGA and Arduino microcontroller share a project
Use the SAMD21 for orchestration
The SAMD21 is the natural place for application logic such as configuration, user input, networking and sequencing. Arduino code can initialize a design, pass parameters to it and read back results, while the FPGA performs the custom digital work.

Use the FPGA for hardware that benefits from parallelism
FPGA logic suits tasks that need several operations at once, fixed timing or custom interfaces. Examples include a video pipeline feeding an HDMI output, camera-data preprocessing, waveform generation, protocol experiments and hardware accelerators. These are project patterns, not guaranteed performance results; the actual capability depends on the FPGA image and your design.
Choose an integration path
The VidorFPGA project materials describe approaches that combine an FPGA image with Arduino code, as well as direct FPGA programming methods. Follow the repository’s current instructions for the exact image, communication interface and programming sequence. Its README warns that direct JTAG RAM programming requires care because the SAMD21 can contend for JTAG when it is outside bootloader mode.
DIY project ideas that fit the architecture
Camera-to-QR reader
Use the MIPI camera connector for image capture and put the pixel-processing or pattern-detection stages in FPGA logic. The SAMD21 can handle setup, results and wireless reporting. Arduino lists QR-code work as a camera use case, but you still need a compatible camera, an appropriate FPGA design and software for decoding.

Whether you're programming in C++ or using Arduino's intuitive libraries, the shield simplifies the process of managing memory, allowing you to focus on your project's core functionality without worrying about memory limitations.
Parallel sensor or protocol experiment
When a device exposes several simultaneous digital signals, FPGA logic can sample or transform them in parallel while the SAMD21 logs, configures or transmits the data. This is more appropriate than treating the board as a drop-in replacement for a basic sensor breakout.
Wireless FPGA instrument
The NINA-W102 can provide Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity for a custom logic analyzer, signal generator or remote display controller. The wireless portion remains an application-design task: define the data format, buffering and error handling between the SAMD21 and the FPGA.
Security-aware connected prototype
The listed ECC508 security chip can be relevant to a connected prototype that needs hardware-backed security features. Consult the board documentation and supported software libraries before assuming a particular authentication flow.

For the question “where is the documentation to know the pin relationship between the physical FPGA pins and the Arduino board?”, start with Arduino’s official MKR Vidor 4000 product resources. The product page provides the board datasheet, full pinout, schematics, Fritzing files, tutorials and technical specifications. Use the full pinout and datasheet together: the diagram distinguishes functions when the board is programmed with the SAMD or with the FPGA.

- Family: MKR
- Identify the physical header pin in the full pinout.
- Check whether that pin’s function changes between SAMD and FPGA operation.
- Confirm the signal direction, voltage and assigned FPGA I/O standard in the design you intend to load.
- Check the relevant current limit for that pin and its group before attaching a load.
Do not reduce the electrical guidance to one board-wide current number. The pinout material reports a 7 mA maximum per pin in one context, while FPGA limits can be 2 mA or 4 mA depending on I/O standard, with additional group-level sink limits. Those values depend on pin, programming mode and configuration. The official diagram and datasheet are the authority for your specific connection.
Software and development requirements
FPGA development
The VidorFPGA repository states that compiling MKRVIDOR4000 FPGA images requires Quartus II 18.0 Lite or Standard. That is the repository’s stated prerequisite, not a guarantee that an old installer will work unchanged on a current computer. Verify tool compatibility, device support and the repository’s current setup notes before committing to a toolchain.
Arduino firmware
For SAMD21-focused work, PlatformIO documents the board identifier mkrvidor4000 and MCU setting samd21g18a. PlatformIO also states that this board has no onboard debug probe and is not ready for debugging in its environment. That limitation is specific to PlatformIO’s documented workflow; it should not be generalized to every development environment.

What to check before buying or starting a build
- Lifecycle: Arduino labels the MKR Vidor 4000 End of Life. Treat listings as potentially old stock or used hardware and verify what is actually included.
- Availability: The cited documentation does not establish current stock or a current price. Check the seller, board condition, returns policy and accessories at the time of purchase.
- Need for an FPGA: Choose it when configurable, parallel logic is central to the project—not merely because it is an Arduino-compatible board.
- Required connectors: Confirm that your design genuinely needs the MIPI camera, Micro HDMI or wireless module, and verify compatibility of the specific camera, display and software.
- Toolchain tolerance: Plan for Quartus II 18.0 Lite or Standard as stated by the repository and allow time to resolve legacy-tool installation or compatibility issues.
- Pin assignment: Reconcile the physical header, SAMD functions, FPGA functions, I/O standard and current limits before wiring.
- Debugging: If using PlatformIO, account for its documented lack of onboard debug-probe support.
- Long-term maintenance: Archive the exact FPGA image, source, tool version and wiring notes so the project remains reproducible if downloads or listings change.
Is the MKR Vidor 4000 still practical?
It can be practical for an existing board, a focused FPGA-learning project or a design that specifically benefits from its camera, HDMI, wireless and programmable-logic combination. It is a riskier choice for a new product or a beginner project that only needs ordinary microcontroller I/O, because the board is End of Life and its FPGA workflow has a specialized, potentially legacy toolchain.
Arduino’s MKR family shares a common pinout intended to make movement among MKR boards easier, and the family supports a broad add-on ecosystem. That does not mean every MKR accessory supports the Vidor’s FPGA, camera or HDMI functions; verify each accessory’s pin use and software requirements.
Bottom line for makers
The MKR Vidor 4000 is best understood as a compact two-processor platform: SAMD21 firmware manages the application, while a Cyclone 10CL016 FPGA supplies custom digital hardware. Its unusual connectors open up camera, display, wireless and parallel-logic projects, but successful builds depend on reading the official pinout, using the repository’s FPGA workflow and respecting configuration-specific current limits. Because Arduino marks it End of Life, secure the hardware and toolchain before designing a project that depends on it.
