Arctis 3 on a PC: Wired Setup, Splitter Choice, and Bluetooth Pairing

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect a standard SteelSeries Arctis 3 to a PC, use its 3.5 mm analog cable. Plug the single 4-pole connector directly into a computer’s combined headset jack. If the computer has separate headphone and microphone sockets, use a dual 3.5 mm headset splitter so the two signals reach the correct ports. Bluetooth pairing is available for the separately identified Arctis 3 Bluetooth model, not the standard wired-only Arctis 3.

The physical port layout determines the correct setup. Identify that layout first, then follow the matching connection procedure below and test both playback and microphone input in your operating system and voice-chat application.

What you need before connecting

The Arctis 3 family has two relevant connection paths: a wired 3.5 mm path and, on the Arctis 3 Bluetooth variant, a documented Bluetooth path. The standard Arctis 3 is an analog headset; it does not become a Bluetooth headset simply because a computer supports Bluetooth.

SteelSeries describes the Arctis 3 as “one of our legacy 3.5mm analog headsets that you simply plug and play.” That means the main decision is not a driver package or a special USB utility. It is whether your PC offers one combined headset jack or two separate audio jacks.

Check the headset variant

  • Standard Arctis 3: connect with the supplied 3.5 mm cable. Do not expect it to appear in a Bluetooth-device list.
  • Arctis 3 Bluetooth: it can also use the 3.5 mm cable, and SteelSeries documents Bluetooth pairing for this variant.

Check the PC’s audio ports

Look along the sides of a laptop or the front and rear panels of a desktop. A single socket marked with a headset icon is generally a combined headphone-and-microphone jack. A computer with two distinct sockets provides one connection for headphones and another for a microphone. The labels or icons on the computer, rather than the physical location alone, should determine which setup you use.

Connect an Arctis 3 to one combined headset jack

This is the simplest arrangement and applies to a laptop or desktop with one compatible headset socket.

  1. Locate the combined jack. Confirm that the socket is identified as a headset or combined audio connection. A headphone-only socket will not provide the microphone contact needed by the four-pole plug.
  2. Insert the Arctis 3 cable. Push the single 4-pole 3.5 mm connector fully into the combined jack. A partial insertion can leave the plug mechanically connected while one of the audio channels or the microphone contact remains disconnected.
  3. Choose the headset for playback. Open your computer’s sound controls and select the connected headset or the analog headset output as the playback device if the computer does not switch automatically.
  4. Choose the microphone input. In the same sound controls, select the analog headset microphone when it is listed separately from the built-in microphone.
  5. Test in two places. Play a known audio source, then make a short microphone recording or use the input meter in your voice-chat application. A successful playback test alone does not prove that the microphone contact is working.

No USB audio interface is required for this analog connection. If the plug is fully inserted but the PC continues to use its speakers or built-in microphone, the issue is usually device selection or the computer’s jack sensing rather than a need for a different Arctis cable.

Connect an Arctis 3 to separate headphone and microphone jacks

A desktop PC may provide independent sockets for headphone output and microphone input. The Arctis 3’s single four-pole plug combines both signals, so it cannot be divided correctly by plugging it into only one of those sockets. Use a dual 3.5 mm headset splitter, also called a headphone-and-microphone splitter adapter, designed to separate a headset connection into independent headphone and microphone plugs.

  1. Identify both PC sockets. Find the jack marked for headphones or audio output and the jack marked for a microphone input. Do not rely on color alone; use the printed labels or icons.
  2. Connect the headset to the splitter. Insert the Arctis 3’s single 4-pole plug into the headset socket on the splitter. The headset socket is the one intended to accept a combined headphone-and-microphone plug.
  3. Connect the splitter’s headphone plug. Insert the plug designated for headphones into the PC’s headphone or audio-output jack.
  4. Connect the splitter’s microphone plug. Insert the plug designated for the microphone into the PC’s microphone jack. Reversing these two plugs can produce playback without microphone input, or no useful signal at all.
  5. Select and test each signal. Set the PC’s playback device to the connected headphone output and its recording device to the connected microphone input. Play audio and make a short recording before opening a meeting or game chat.

Readers whose computer has one combined headset jack do not need this accessory. A splitter is relevant only when the computer exposes separate headphone and microphone connections, or when another piece of equipment specifically requires those two independent plugs.

What to look for in a splitter

  • One combined headset socket for the Arctis 3 plug.
  • Two clearly identified 3.5 mm outputs, one for headphones and one for microphone.
  • A four-pole headset-compatible input rather than an adapter intended only to duplicate stereo headphone audio.
  • Plugs and cable length that can reach the computer without pulling the headset connector sideways.

The official setup guidance establishes that a dual adapter is needed for separate PC jacks, but it does not verify any particular listing, brand, price, or affiliate offer. Treat those as accessory-selection decisions independent of the headset itself.

Pair the Arctis 3 Bluetooth model with a PC

Use this section only if the headset is the Arctis 3 Bluetooth variant. The standard Arctis 3 does not gain Bluetooth capability through software or through a Bluetooth-enabled PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the headset off. Bluetooth discovery is initiated from the powered-off state described by SteelSeries.
  2. Hold the power button for six seconds. Continue holding until the power LED begins blinking rapidly. The rapid blink indicates that the headset is ready to be discovered.
  3. Open the PC’s Bluetooth device scan. Start a new device search in the computer’s Bluetooth controls.
  4. Select “Arctis 3 Bluetooth.” Choose that exact device name when it appears in the scan results.
  5. Confirm both profiles in use. After pairing, select the headset as the playback device and, when you need voice chat, select its microphone input in the operating system or application.

The Arctis 3 Bluetooth model can still be connected with the 3.5 mm cable. Wired operation is therefore the fallback when Bluetooth is unavailable, when a wired connection is preferred, or when the computer’s Bluetooth scan does not find the headset.

Set up playback and microphone input after the physical connection

The connection procedure gets the signal to the computer; the operating system and application still have to use it. Menu names differ between operating systems and versions, so use the sound and Bluetooth controls provided by your particular PC rather than assuming a specific screen layout.

Playback check

  1. Open the computer’s sound settings after plugging in the headset or completing Bluetooth pairing.
  2. Choose the Arctis 3 analog output for a wired connection, or the paired Arctis 3 Bluetooth output for a wireless connection.
  3. Play a source with continuous sound. Confirm that audio comes from the headset rather than the PC’s speakers.
  4. If the application has its own output-device selector, choose the same headset there instead of leaving it on a previously selected speaker.

Microphone check

  1. Open the recording or input section of the computer’s sound controls.
  2. Select the Arctis 3 microphone for a wired connection, or the paired Bluetooth headset microphone when using the Bluetooth model.
  3. Speak at a normal level and watch for an input meter or make a short recording.
  4. Open the voice-chat application and verify that its input device is the same microphone. Use the application’s own test function if it provides one.

These are practical PC checks, not a detailed Windows workflow published in the cited SteelSeries setup material. If your operating system presents different labels, follow the equivalent playback, recording, and Bluetooth controls it supplies.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No audio in the headset

  • Remove and reinsert the 3.5 mm plug firmly. A four-pole connector that is not fully seated may leave the headset apparently connected while the electrical contacts are incomplete.
  • For a single-jack PC, confirm that the socket is a combined headset jack rather than headphone-only.
  • For a two-jack PC, check that the splitter’s headphone plug is in the headphone output and that the headset plug is in the splitter’s combined headset socket.
  • Check the computer and application playback selections. A PC can remain set to its speakers even after a headset is connected.
  • Try a second audio source. If one application is silent while another plays normally, the problem is likely that application’s output selection or mute state.

Playback works but the microphone does not

  • On a computer with separate sockets, verify the splitter’s microphone plug and headphone plug are not reversed.
  • On a computer with one combined socket, verify that the jack is headset-capable and that the four-pole plug is fully inserted.
  • Check the selected recording device in both the operating system and the voice application. The application may still be using the built-in microphone.
  • Make a recording outside the chat application. This separates a physical connection problem from an application-specific input or permission setting.

The microphone works but playback is missing

  • Inspect the splitter’s headphone connection and the PC’s headphone jack.
  • Confirm that the playback device is set to the headset output rather than the computer’s speakers.
  • Test the headset through the other supported arrangement: if you used a splitter on a two-jack desktop, test the cable on a known combined headset jack when available. This helps isolate the splitter from the headset.

Only one side of the headset plays

  • Reseat the connector because a partially inserted plug can interrupt one contact.
  • Check whether the same imbalance occurs with several audio sources.
  • On a two-jack setup, inspect the splitter connection and make sure the headset plug is fully seated in the splitter’s combined socket.

The Bluetooth model is not found

  • Confirm that the headset is the Arctis 3 Bluetooth variant; the standard Arctis 3 is not documented as a Bluetooth headset.
  • Turn the headset off, then hold the power button for six seconds until the LED blinks rapidly.
  • Start a fresh Bluetooth scan and select the device name “Arctis 3 Bluetooth.”
  • If pairing remains unsuccessful, use the 3.5 mm cable while you check the PC’s Bluetooth function and previously saved device entries.

Wired versus Bluetooth: which connection should you use?

Consideration 3.5 mm wired connection Bluetooth connection
Supported headset versions Standard Arctis 3 and Arctis 3 Bluetooth Arctis 3 Bluetooth variant only
PC requirement One combined headset jack, or separate jacks plus a splitter PC Bluetooth capability and a successful device pairing
Physical setup Plug in the cable; add a splitter when the PC has separate jacks Power off, hold the button for six seconds, wait for rapid LED blinking, then scan
Best fit Desktops, laptops, and situations where a direct analog connection is preferred Arctis 3 Bluetooth owners who want to avoid a cable and have compatible Bluetooth
Fallback Works when Bluetooth is unavailable Not available on the standard Arctis 3

Final connection checklist

  • Identify whether the headset is the standard Arctis 3 or Arctis 3 Bluetooth.
  • Identify whether the PC has one combined headset jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks.
  • Use the single 4-pole plug directly with a combined jack.
  • Use a dual 3.5 mm headset splitter when the PC has separate jacks.
  • For Arctis 3 Bluetooth, hold the power button for six seconds from the off state and select “Arctis 3 Bluetooth” during the PC’s Bluetooth scan.
  • Test playback and microphone input separately in the operating system and the voice application.
