Its first product, the Sperro SV hardshell, combines repair-focused design and a stated route for recovering some nylon with components that the recycling process described in 2026 could not recover. The challenge is to make those changes without asking users to give up the performance expected of a technical shell.
What is Arc’teryx System 0?
System 0 is Arc’teryx’s effort to connect product design and manufacturing with care, repair, customer services and end-of-life material recovery. The company’s stated premise is that circularity depends on how those parts work together: “No single product or service is fully circular on its own. It is the ecosystem of products and services that can bring circularity to life.”

That distinction matters. A jacket does not become circular just because one fabric can be recycled. It also has to last, be repairable, reach a repair service when it needs one, and be handled in a way that allows recoverable materials to be separated and processed. System 0 describes an attempt to build that broader system; the available reporting does not establish a complete closed loop for the Sperro SV.
Why start with a technical hardshell?
Arc’teryx announced the Sperro SV as System 0’s first product on August 26, 2026. T3 reported that the project developed over four years and that the team chose a hardshell because it is among the company’s most technically demanding categories.

According to T3’s reporting on the project, an early prototype removed zippers to simplify recycling, but athletes and professional users found it impractical. The team concluded that easier recycling was not a useful improvement if the jacket stopped working for its intended use. Arc’teryx vice president of advanced concepts Alexandra Plante put the trade-off this way to Vogue: “We were not interested in creating a product that asked people to accept lower performance in exchange for lower impact.”
T3 also reported that professional users, including search-and-rescue teams, tested the product. That account describes the development process; it is not a published comparative performance test or environmental assessment.

What can be repaired or recovered?
Repairability informed the Sperro SV’s design. T3 reported that the team drew on lessons from products returned to ReBIRD for repair, using recurring wear and failure points to guide design decisions. Vogue reported that the jacket has 80 different repair routines and removable zipper stops intended to make slider replacement easier.

Arc’teryx says the Sperro SV includes three years of unlimited out-of-warranty repairs through ReBIRD. That is the company’s stated offer for this product; the announcement does not establish that identical coverage applies to other products or in every region.

Material recovery is more limited. Arc’teryx identifies the Sperro SV’s GORE-TEX Pro fabric as using an ePE membrane, and says the nylon face fabric and backer were designed for recyclability with Aquafil, the maker of ECONYL regenerated nylon. Vogue reported that the recycled nylon 6 in those two layers can be chemically recycled by Aquafil. It also reported that several other components could not then be recycled through the described process.

These descriptions point to partial material recovery, not a fully recyclable garment. They also do not specify a recovery yield or establish how much of a returned jacket would become material for another product.

What does the TESTEX certification establish?
Arc’teryx says the Sperro SV is the first product certified under TESTEX Circularity, a standard it says it helped develop. Vogue describes the assessment as considering durability, repairability and recyclability together, and reports that the jacket scored particularly high for durability and lower for recycling.
The label is therefore best understood as an assessment under a particular framework. It does not mean every component can be recycled, and it is not a measurement of emissions avoided, waste prevented or the jacket’s total life-cycle impact compared with another shell.

What remains unproven about the environmental benefit?
The company and the reports describe design choices, repair provisions and a route for processing selected nylon layers. They do not provide a verified comparative figure for greenhouse-gas emissions, waste avoided, material-recovery yield or life-cycle impact. Without such a figure, the size of any environmental benefit cannot be quantified from the available information.
That makes the distinction between a design intention and a measured outcome important. Repair access and recoverable materials may support longer use or material recovery, but the reporting does not establish how often customers will use repairs, how many jackets will enter the recovery process, or what environmental savings result.
When and where is the Sperro SV available?
Arc’teryx announced global availability beginning September 4, 2026. That date has passed, but the announcement does not establish current inventory in any particular country or retailer. Availability should be checked for the reader’s market rather than inferred from the launch date.

Vogue also reported a five-year System 0 roadmap, attributed to Arc’teryx’s Katie Becker. That is a reported company plan, not a completed program outcome. System 0’s longer-term significance will depend on how its repair and recovery services operate in practice and whether future products expand what can be recovered.
