Archrebel Tactics is launching an unusually substantial Steam demo: developer Ularis Badler describes it as a complete short game with a first playthrough expected to take 6–8 hours, or longer for newcomers. The demo has its own story and mission rather than serving only as a tutorial, while the full game still has no announced release date.

In an October 1, 2026 announcement, Badler called the demo a “complete short-game” and said a first playthrough can take “6–8 hours, or longer if you are new to this type of game.” That makes it closer to a compact standalone campaign than a short introduction to the finished product.

It is intentionally denser than the opening of a conventional campaign and introduces mechanics that would normally appear later in the main game. The result should give players a concentrated look at the systems without claiming to represent the full campaign’s opening hours.

When it releases on Steam
The developer’s announcement targets October 16, 2026 for the demo. Because that date is also the date of the available announcement, the safest way to confirm whether it is downloadable is to check the live Steam listing. The same page currently gives no release date for the complete game.
How the opening choice works
The demo starts after a crash landing. Players use the shuttle’s remaining power to open one of four starting kits:

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Includes gameboard, armies with 4 Infantry, 12 Cavalry, and 8 Artillery each, deck of 56 Risk cards, 1 card box, 5 dice, 5 cardboard war crates, and game guide.
- PLAY USING ALEXA SKILL: Players have the option of playing this Risk game using Alexa. (Alexa device sold separately. ) Note: sound comes from paired Echo device.
- DRAGON TOKEN: This Risk game includes a dragon token. Players must destroy the dragon before it destroys their troops. A lucky roll can subdue the dragon and get it out of a player's territory
- Upgrade
- Special Gear
- Weapons
- Survival
Each kit supplies items, including some unique equipment, and can alter the difficulty substantially. There is no preview of the contents before the choice, so this is a deliberate commitment rather than a loadout screen that can be safely optimized after inspecting every option. Badler warns that choosing poorly can make the demo much harder.

Combat and progression systems
Grid combat with action points
Combat is grid-based and turn-based, using a classic action-point system inspired explicitly by Rebelstar (1986) and Laser Squad. Action points let a unit divide a turn among movement, attacks and other actions, making positioning and the order of operations as important as raw weapon strength.

Classes and leveling
Units earn experience and select a permanent class when they reach their first human level. That decision changes how a unit contributes to a squad, which equipment upgrades are valuable and how much the team depends on cooperation between different roles. Since the class is permanent, the first-level choice is a strategic commitment rather than a temporary experiment.
Broader tactical systems
The planned game combines mission selection and equipment development with destructible environments, ranged and melee combat, morale and stamina systems, class-based progression and optional permadeath. The demo’s denser mission is intended to expose several of these systems earlier than a normal campaign would.

What makes this different from a short tutorial demo
| Aspect | Archrebel Tactics demo |
|---|---|
| Expected first playthrough | 6–8 hours, or longer for newcomers, according to the developer |
| Content format | Self-contained short game with an exclusive mission and story |
| Combat model | Grid-based, turn-based action-point system |
| Opening decision | One of four shuttle-power starting kits, with no preview |
| Progression | Experience gains followed by a permanent class choice at the first human level |
| Planned systems | Destructible environments, ranged and melee attacks, morale, stamina and optional permadeath |
This structure means the demo can function as a meaningful tactical game in its own right while also demonstrating systems reserved for later stages of the full campaign. It should appeal most to players who enjoy planning several actions ahead, managing limited resources and accepting consequences from early build decisions.

Should you try it?
If you want a substantial preview rather than a brief tutorial, Archrebel Tactics’ demo is notable for its promised length and self-contained structure. Expect a concentrated, potentially demanding tactical scenario: the starting-kit decision is irreversible in practical terms, later class selection is permanent, and the mission deliberately introduces advanced mechanics early. Players looking for a quick story sampler may find the 6–8-hour commitment longer than expected, while fans of action-point tactics and the Rebelstar or Laser Squad tradition have a clearer reason to try it.
