Who is in England’s current U21 midfield group?
England’s squad announcement of 18 September 2026 lists five midfielders: Archie Gray, Jobe Bellingham, Josh King, Lewis Miley and Sydie Peck. That is a snapshot of one international window, not proof that each player has one fixed role for club or country. A separate, earlier comparison group comes from England’s squad for the June 2025 U21 EURO: Elliot Anderson, Jobe Bellingham, Archie Gray, Hayden Hackney, Jack Hinshelwood, Tyler Morton and Alex Scott were listed among the midfielders. What makes Gray’s role distinctive?
Versatility is the clearest documented difference
Tottenham describes Gray as a midfielder and a “versatile midfielder/defender.” That supports calling out his capacity to cover more than one broad area of the pitch, but it does not establish how often he played in midfield versus defence, or whether he is better in one role. Tottenham’s player profile records 35 appearances in all competitions in 2025/26 and 46 in 2024/25. Appearance totals indicate usage volume, not minutes by position or comparative quality.

Club-reported use is date-specific
In a March 2026 report, Tottenham said Gray had made 31 appearances across all competitions by that point, praised his recent midfield displays, and noted his ability to cover across the backline. The article also said he had completed the full match in each of the previous seven Premier League games as of its publication. These are dated club statements, not a current-season running total. What did the 2025 U21 EURO show about their use?
Opener against Czechia: Gray started
Gray was in England’s starting XI for the 3–1 win over Czechia on 12 June 2025. Hayden Hackney replaced Alex Scott in the 85th minute. The report documents selection and a substitution, but does not specify each player’s full tactical function. UEFA’s Czechia match report is evidence of that match’s lineup and changes.

Semi-final against the Netherlands: different midfield names, late Gray entry
In England’s 2–1 semi-final win over the Netherlands on 25 June 2025, Alex Scott and Elliot Anderson were listed in midfield. Hackney came on for Scott in the 84th minute; Gray entered in the 90th minute for Harvey Elliott. This shows Gray was used as a late replacement for an advanced player in that match, not that he is generally an attacking midfielder. UEFA’s semi-final report records the lineup and substitutions.

Taken together, those two match reports show Gray starting the tournament opener and appearing late in the semi-final, while Scott and Anderson were named in the semi-final midfield and Hackney replaced Scott. They are useful examples of deployment, not enough matches to define permanent roles across a season.

How does the team’s tactical plan fit the comparison?
UEFA’s Technical Observer Group highlighted England’s ability to play through Germany’s press in its analysis of the 2025 final. Harvey Elliott, named Player of the Tournament, described the plan: “The plan was the same through the whole game – to play out from back and find the gaps in between their midfield. We did it so many times in the first half and we scored two great goals from it. In the second half it was harder because we had a lot of pressure on ourselves.” UEFA’s final analysis attributes the quote to Elliott. It describes England’s collective approach; it is not Gray’s own account of his job in the team.

Not on the evidence available here. The official sources support a comparison of squad labels, club-described versatility and specific tournament appearances. They do not provide consistent, same-competition measurements of progression, chance creation, defensive work or possession contribution for Gray and every current midfield peer. A claim that one player is definitively England U21’s strongest passer, defender or creator would go beyond these sources.
