A remarkably preserved warship from ancient Phanagoria shows how Mithridates VI’s naval engineers protected a wooden hull from seawater, marine organisms, shipworms and fire. Its hull design, radiocarbon dates and a bronze ram bearing the king’s symbols identify it as a fast one-oared warship from the middle of the first century BCE.
What archaeologists found at Phanagoria
Underwater archaeologists located the wreck in 2012 at the ancient settlement of Phanagoria in Taman Bay. More than 1.5 meters of sand, silt and shells covered the surviving timber, helping preserve about 16 meters of hull. A peer-reviewed study describes the vessel as the oldest warship discovered in Russian waters.

The hull’s shape indicates a vessel intended for speed rather than heavy cargo. Radiocarbon analysis places its timbers in the middle of the first century BCE. The evidence points to a ship that combined rowing with sail power and carried a single bank of oars.

How archaeologists linked the wreck to Mithridates VI
Identification rests on several independent clues rather than on one object alone. The hull form is consistent with a military vessel, while a bronze naval ram found nearby carries the star-and-crescent imagery associated with Mithridates VI Eupator. The radiocarbon dates also fit his reign.

E. A. Greshnikov and colleagues concluded: “The complex of conducted studies convincingly identifies the vessel as a high-speed sailing and rowing ship with one row of oars (unireme), in the middle of the 1st century BC, which was a part of the navy of Mithridates VI Eupator.”
The classification matters because an early announcement described the wreck as a bireme. The later peer-reviewed assessment identifies it as a unireme: a ship with one oar bank. It should not be presented as a trireme or bireme.
What the warship looked like and how it was built

The interior materials were not decorative filler. Researchers interpret the tarred wool and clay mixture as a practical system for closing seams and limiting water penetration. The animal hair and feathers helped create a fibrous composite. The authors also argue that the coating could improve resistance to fire, a serious danger for wooden ships carrying flammable materials or fighting at close range.

On the outside, realgar—an arsenic sulfide mineral—was combined with beeswax and conifer resin. This was not modern antifouling paint, but it served a similar defensive purpose. The sulfur-bearing treatment slowed the growth and activity of marine mollusks and helped protect the hull from the shipworm Teredo navalis. The “enemy that never sleeps” was therefore the sea’s continuous assault: water working through seams, organisms attaching to the hull, shipworms boring into wood and fire threatening the vessel above the waterline.
Why the metalwork reveals a maintenance system
A separate analysis examined 23 metal objects from the wreck, including 22 nails or nail fragments. The fastenings were copper or copper alloy even though iron was cheaper and readily available. Repeated use of copper suggests that builders valued durability and resistance to corrosion in a wet environment.
A small lead sheet was found in a form consistent with reinforcement of vulnerable sections. It does not indicate that the entire hull was covered in lead. Selective reinforcement would have added protection where damage was most likely without the weight and cost of full sheathing.

The bronze ram contained approximately 91% copper, 4.7% tin and 4.3% lead, according to data reported by Anatolian Archaeology in 2026. Its five-pointed stars and crescents provide the strongest symbolic connection to Mithridates’ naval forces. Together with the hull design and dating, the ram makes a more secure identification than any single line of evidence could provide.
What may have happened in 63 BCE
The wreck probably dates to the Phanagorian revolt of 63 BCE, the final year of Mithridates’ reign. This is an interpretation, not an event directly observed in the archaeological record.
Researchers connect the loss to the account by the ancient historian Appian. His narrative describes an uprising in which royal children were captured and a flotilla was sent from Panticapaeum to Phanagoria. The location, date and military character of the wreck fit that episode, but the connection remains a historical reconstruction based on matching evidence.

Unireme, bireme or trireme?
The safest description is a fast sailing-and-rowing unireme. “Unireme” refers to the single row of oars, not to a particular hull material or a guaranteed speed. The ship’s compact hull, rowing arrangement and ram indicate a combat role, while its sail provided efficient movement when wind conditions allowed.
There is no reliable performance figure in the cited archaeological publications for its maximum speed, crew size or operating range. Nor do those studies establish the size of Mithridates’ wider fleet. Ancient literary traditions may contain broader claims, but they should not be substituted for measurements from this wreck.

Most ancient warship descriptions come from texts, reliefs or later reconstructions. Phanagoria provides physical evidence for the less visible work that kept a wooden fighting ship operational. The builders combined organic sealants, mineral coatings, corrosion-resistant fastenings, targeted reinforcement and a bronze striking weapon.
That combination also shows that naval engineering was an ongoing maintenance problem. A hull could be damaged without a battle: seawater opened seams, organisms weakened planks and shipworms consumed timber from within. The protective treatments were a coordinated response to those threats, not a single technological trick.
The surviving timbers, the Mithridatean symbols on the ram and the material evidence of repair and protection together make this one of the rare archaeological windows onto how a Hellenistic-era military vessel was actually constructed and kept afloat.
