You can add it to a campaign that still uses 2014 material, but a subclass and its class should stay in the same rules family whenever that subclass has a 2024 version. Third-party supplements require individual checks; there is no blanket guarantee that every outside product works unchanged. Organized-play approval, mechanical usability, platform access and permission to redistribute are separate questions.
What “compatible” means in practice
A group can call a book compatible for several different reasons, and those tests do not always produce the same answer. Before adding an Arcana Unleashed option, identify which of these you need:

Passing one test does not automatically pass the others. A subclass can be mechanically usable at a home table but excluded from a particular organized-play campaign. A digital compendium can be searchable without granting permission to repost its text. Treat these as four decisions rather than one broad “compatible” label.
What Arcana Unleashed adds
The official Dungeons & Dragons product page presents Arcana Unleashed as a high-magic expansion under the line “Step into a World Where Magic Rules.” Its advertised character and spell content is summarized below, alongside the separate catalog description used by Roll20 in 2026.

The different spell totals do not by themselves indicate an error. The official page uses a rounded “30+” description, while Roll20 gives a count of 33 in its digital catalog. Use the listing for the edition you are buying when checking exactly what is included. The book is an official sourcebook for the 2024 rules, not a neutral conversion manual for every previous edition.
Using Arcana Unleashed with the 2024 rules
A campaign built on the 2024 Player’s Handbook is the straightforward case: start with the 2024 class, then choose Arcana Unleashed options presented for that rules framework. The main risk is importing a legacy subclass or feature whose assumptions differ from the revised class.
Build a character without mixing class families
- Set the campaign baseline. Record that the character uses the 2024 class progression, terminology and character-creation procedure.
- Choose an Arcana Unleashed subclass. Use the subclass with the 2024 class it is written to support. Check the subclass’s level sequence and any references to class features before finalizing the character.
- Check for an official 2024 update. If the same subclass exists in a 2024 form, use that version with the 2024 class. Do not attach the older version to the revised class merely because the names match.
- Review feats, spells and backgrounds together. Confirm prerequisites, spell lists, ability-score rules and background benefits against the 2024 character rules your table has adopted.
- Record exceptions. If the Dungeon Master permits a legacy element, write the exact version and any conversion in the campaign notes so later level-ups use the same interpretation.
This process keeps the class chassis and subclass progression aligned. It also makes later rules questions answerable: the group can point to a named 2024 option or to a documented house conversion instead of relying on memory.

D&D Beyond’s compatibility guidance allows players to continue using 2014 classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds and feats; older material is marked Legacy. That means a 2014 campaign does not have to discard its existing characters to use selected Arcana Unleashed content. It does mean that every imported option should be checked against the 2014 class and the exact wording at your table.
The subclass rule that prevents most problems
When a subclass received an update in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, the older subclass cannot be used with the 2024 version of that class. The older subclass remains usable with the 2014 class. In practical terms, keep the pair together:

- 2014 class + 2014 subclass version: the legacy pairing.
- 2024 class + 2024 subclass version: the revised pairing.
- 2024 class + an older subclass that has a 2024 update: not the supported pairing under the compatibility guidance.
This rule concerns the class/subclass relationship, not an automatic ban on every 2014 element. A 2014 background, feat or species may still be usable, but you should verify its prerequisites and interactions with the rest of the character rather than assuming that a Legacy label performs a complete conversion.
Importing only the pieces you need
A 2014 table can use Arcana Unleashed selectively. For example, the Dungeon Master might allow a new spell or background while retaining 2014 classes and subclasses. Decide whether each option changes a class feature, a prerequisite, an action economy interaction or a spell-list assumption. If it does, resolve that interaction before play and write the ruling down. Selective adoption is usually easier to manage than converting the entire campaign at once.
Running a mixed 2014/2024 table
Mixed campaigns are workable when the table treats rules versions as explicit data rather than as informal labels. Use this procedure at session zero or whenever a new character joins:
- Mark the class version. Put “2014” or “2024” beside every character’s class in the campaign roster.
- Match updated subclasses. Where a subclass has a 2024 update, pair it with the class version that belongs to that update. Keep the 2014 subclass with the 2014 class.
- Tag legacy options. Mark 2014 backgrounds, feats, species and other elements as Legacy in your notes, even when the group allows them.
- Compare prerequisites. Check ability-score requirements, proficiency wording, spell preparation and level-based features against the character’s class version.
- Document house conversions. Write a short entry for every changed number, renamed feature or altered prerequisite, including who approved it and when it takes effect.
- Freeze the interpretation for the level. Avoid changing a feature in the middle of an adventure unless the group agrees how to handle previous choices and future retraining.
The result is not a claim that every combination is officially balanced. It is a repeatable way to identify the combinations that need a ruling and to keep all players using the same ruling.
Organized play and campaign settings
The official organized-play update makes Arcana Unleashed character options and spells available for Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Ravenloft and Dragonlance campaigns. The same update permits Dungeoncraft creators to use the book’s new monsters. Those permissions apply to the organized-play guidance described by the update; they do not automatically govern every home campaign or every independent event.

Legends of Greyhawk
Legends of Greyhawk guidance was updated to include Arcana Unleashed’s Chapter 1 character options and Chapter 2 spells, with immediate availability for play. If you are joining that program, check the current campaign document for creation limits, level rules and any table-specific restrictions in addition to the book’s inclusion.

What to verify before an event
- Which edition of the class and subclass your character uses.
- Whether the event’s current document lists Arcana Unleashed as legal, and which chapters or options it includes.
- Whether a 2014 Legacy option needs a campaign-specific conversion.
- Whether the event permits a particular background, feat, spell or magic item even when the sourcebook itself is allowed.
Organized-play eligibility is a campaign-policy decision. Do not infer it from the fact that the book is official or that a virtual tabletop sells it.
Third-party D&D content: evaluate each product
No official source provides a blanket statement that every third-party Arcana Unleashed supplement works unchanged under both rulesets. Treat each outside book as its own compatibility case. Three checks cover most of the practical risk:

Mechanical review checklist
Read the third-party option beside the Arcana Unleashed option it references, not in isolation. Check class names, subclass levels, ability-score language, spell terminology, action and reaction timing, proficiency categories and any reference to a 2014-only or 2024-only feature. If the publisher supplies a conversion, follow that text first; if not, ask the Dungeon Master to approve a written ruling before the option enters play.
Fan content and commercial distribution
Wizards of the Coast’s Fan Content Policy states: “You can’t sell or license your Fan Content to any third parties for any type of compensation.” That statement is relevant to fan-made supplements and monetized distribution. It does not replace the license terms of a separately published commercial third-party book. A product can be legal to buy and use at your table while still prohibiting you from reposting its text, bundling it into another paid product or distributing copies to players.

Physical and digital editions
Asmodee lists an English-language hardcover sourcebook and describes it as compatible with the 2024 D&D rules. Roll20 sells a digital compendium that is searchable in the Compendium, Roll20 Tabletop and Roll20 Characters, with Digital Reader access. Choose the format according to how you reference rules during play.

Digital availability is a platform feature, not a rules conversion. A searchable 2024 entry does not transform a 2014 subclass into a 2024 subclass, and buying a hardcover does not confer digital entitlements unless the seller explicitly includes them.

Use one row per character or imported option. Keeping the record at this level prevents a campaign-wide assumption from hiding an individual incompatibility.
- Identify the source. Write “Arcana Unleashed,” the option name and whether it is a subclass, background, feat, spell, item or monster.
- Mark the rules family. Record 2014 or 2024 for the base class or option. If the source is third-party, record the publisher’s stated target as well.
- Check for an update. Note whether a 2024 version exists and which version the character is actually using.
- Check campaign permission. For organized play, record the setting and chapter permission. For a home game, record the Dungeon Master’s ruling.
- Check the platform. If the group uses a virtual tabletop, confirm that the purchased edition exposes the needed entries and character-sheet tools.
- Check sharing rights. Keep copies and exports within the product’s license and the applicable fan-content policy.
When a later erratum or campaign update changes the answer, edit the row rather than silently changing a character sheet. That gives the group a visible history of what was approved.

A 2024 class is paired with an old subclass
Symptom: The subclass name appears familiar, but its level progression or feature wording assumes the 2014 class. Fix: Use the 2024 subclass where an update exists, or move the character back to the 2014 class. If neither is acceptable, obtain a specific written house ruling instead of blending the two versions.

A Legacy label is treated as a complete conversion
Symptom: A 2014 feat, background or species is allowed without checking prerequisites or interactions. Fix: Keep the Legacy designation, then compare the option’s requirements and wording with the chosen class version and campaign rules.
Organized-play permission is assumed from home-game use
Symptom: A character legal at a private table is rejected at an event. Fix: Read the current event document, including chapter-specific and setting-specific limits, before registration.
A third-party conversion is copied without permission
Symptom: A group uploads a paid supplement or republishes its text so every player can download it. Fix: Share only what the product license permits; direct players to obtain their own copies when redistribution is restricted.

Symptom: A buyer assumes a hardcover or one storefront purchase unlocks another service’s compendium. Fix: Confirm the edition and entitlement on the seller’s listing before buying, and treat platform access as separate from rules compatibility.
