Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: ARC Raiders is the more approachable extraction shooter for most newcomers, while Escape from Tarkov is generally the more punishing choice. That is a qualified comparison, not a measured difficulty ranking: no published study establishes a universal survival rate or learning-time difference. ARC Raiders combines rival players with large ARC machines, offers forgiving entry options such as free loadouts and objective-based skill progress, and uses a third-person view. Tarkov emphasizes lethal raids, realistic injury systems, first-person combat and the risk of losing raid loot when extraction fails.
What both games ask you to do
ARC Raiders and Escape from Tarkov belong to the extraction-shooter family. You enter a dangerous area, search for valuable equipment or complete objectives, encounter other threats, and try to reach an extraction point. Anything you successfully leave with can support later raids; dying before extraction puts the value of that run at risk.

The shared loop makes the games comparable, but the experience around that loop is different. ARC Raiders presents itself as a multiplayer extraction adventure on a future Earth ravaged by mechanized ARC forces. Tarkov presents itself as an extraction FPS in which every raid can end in death and extraction determines whether you keep or lose what you found. Those descriptions establish the games’ intended stakes, not a laboratory measurement of which title every player will find harder.

How the extraction loop differs in practice
ARC Raiders: a PvPvE sandbox
ARC Raiders puts machines and humans into the same surface space. Its official description calls it a lethal future-Earth adventure, and the Steam page describes movement between the machine-ruled surface and the underground society of Speranza. You are therefore managing two kinds of uncertainty at once: a machine encounter can force a fight or a detour, while another player can choose to contest your loot, cooperate temporarily or avoid you.
The PvE component is not merely background decoration in the official framing. ARC machines are a prominent source of danger, so a quiet-looking route can become dangerous even when no rival player is visible. The game’s published features include online co-op as well as PvP, allowing groups to approach those encounters together. Other players’ appearance is described as more variable than in a conventional PvP shooter, which gives each run a less predictable rhythm.
Tarkov: a raid built around lethal extraction
Tarkov’s store description calls it an extraction FPS and stresses that every raid risks death. The stated consequence is direct: extraction decides whether your loot is retained or lost. Its combat model highlights realistic injuries, including bleeding and limb damage, so a fight can continue to affect your ability to survive even after the first exchange.
Recommended Free Tools
The listing identifies PMCs and Scavs as combatants. That means Tarkov also has player-versus-environment pressure, but its official copy puts greater emphasis on armed survival, injury and the cost of a failed raid than on a machine ecosystem. Avoid interpreting that as “Tarkov has no PvE”; Scavs are explicitly part of its encounter mix.
Threats: machines versus human combatants
Why ARC machines change decision-making
ARC machines can reveal your position, interrupt a route or consume resources before you ever meet a rival. A player who enters expecting only a duel has to account for noise, movement and ammunition spent on mechanical enemies. Co-op partners can divide attention between suppressing a machine and watching for human raiders, while a solo player may need to disengage rather than win every encounter.

This design creates a broader definition of success. You can choose a safer path, delay an objective, or leave with less loot when the machine threat becomes too expensive. The official descriptions do not provide a universal machine difficulty scale, so the practical burden will vary with your equipment, route and group.
Why Tarkov’s injuries raise the cost of mistakes
Tarkov’s store copy specifically calls out bleeding and limb damage. Those mechanics make a hit consequential beyond the instant of impact: surviving the initial exchange does not automatically mean the raid is safe. Combined with the explicit risk of losing loot on a failed extraction, the result is a system in which one poorly judged fight can damage both your character’s condition and the value you hoped to carry home.
The available material does not establish exact damage numbers, healing times, armor behavior or a comparative survival percentage. Treat “more punishing” as an interpretation of the documented stakes, not as a universal statistical claim.
Third-person ARC Raiders versus first-person Tarkov
Third-person advantages and trade-offs
Steam classifies ARC Raiders as a third-person shooter. Seeing your character from behind can make movement through cover, corners and open terrain easier to read, particularly when you are learning a new map. It also gives co-op players a clearer sense of their avatar and nearby positioning. That visibility does not remove risk: machines and rival players can still punish exposed movement, and third-person camera information is not a promise of easier gunfights.
First-person advantages and trade-offs
Tarkov is classified as a first-person extraction FPS. First-person presentation concentrates attention on sightlines, weapon handling and audio cues from your own viewpoint. It can feel more immediate, but it also limits what you can see around cover compared with a detached camera. In a game that already emphasizes lethal injury and loot loss, that narrower perspective can make cautious positioning and information gathering feel essential.

Which game is harder?
For a typical newcomer, the strongest evidence supports this wording: Tarkov is generally the more punishing game, while ARC Raiders is the more approachable entry point. Xbox Wire’s launch-period preview presents ARC Raiders specifically as an option for people who have not tried extraction shooters. PC Gamer’s reviewer described it as more casual than Tarkov. Those are editorial judgments, not controlled tests, but they align with the documented mechanics.
Tarkov’s official description makes failed extraction, death, bleeding and limb damage central to the pitch. ARC Raiders’ published preview describes safety valves that reduce the cost of experimenting: free loadouts provide a minimum viable kit without risking your own equipment, and objectives grant skill points even when you fail to extract. ARC Raiders also has variable encounters with other players rather than a fixed expectation of constant PvP contact.
“Harder” still depends on the player. A veteran of first-person tactical shooters may prefer Tarkov’s viewpoint and find its rules readable, while a player who dislikes machine encounters may struggle more with ARC Raiders. Neither game has a cited common difficulty scale, learning-time study or survival-rate comparison, so any absolute ranking would overstate the evidence.
Why ARC Raiders can be easier to start
Free loadouts reduce the first-raid penalty
Xbox Wire describes free loadouts that let a player enter with a minimum viable kit without risking personally owned equipment. That matters during the learning phase: you can test routes, extraction behavior and machine encounters without turning every mistake into a loss of your preferred gear. The preview does not establish how many free loadouts are available, how often they refresh or whether later patches changed the system, so check the current game build for those details.
Objectives reward progress even after failure
The same preview says raid objectives grant skill points even if you fail to extract. This separates character or skill progression from a perfect survival outcome. You still lose the run’s loot when you fail to leave, but an unsuccessful raid can contribute toward future capability instead of producing no progress at all. The published information does not specify every objective type or skill-tree rule.

Encounter frequency is less predictable than a standard PvP match
Xbox Wire notes that encounters with other players are more variable than in a conventional PvP shooter. That variability can create breathing room for exploration and objective work, although it can also produce uncertainty: a quiet route may remain quiet, or it may place you in an unexpected fight. ARC Raiders therefore lowers some entry barriers without becoming a low-stakes game.
Why Tarkov can feel harsher from the first raid
Extraction is the condition for keeping loot
Tarkov’s Steam description states that extraction determines whether you keep or lose raid loot. The consequence is easy to understand but difficult to manage: finding valuable equipment is only part of the task, and every additional minute spent searching can expose you to another fight. The source does not provide a universal value table or loss percentage, so do not assume that every item has the same strategic importance.
Injury systems extend the consequences of combat
Bleeding and limb damage are explicitly highlighted in the store description. A player may win a brief exchange yet remain impaired, making the route to extraction more dangerous. Exact treatment systems, recovery rules and equipment interactions are not established by the information available for this comparison; consult current in-game documentation before relying on a specific medical procedure.
First-person information is narrower
The first-person view focuses your attention through the character’s line of sight. That can reward players who enjoy deliberate peeking, sound awareness and route discipline, but it leaves less room for checking a corner without exposing yourself. The camera alone does not prove greater difficulty; it contributes to the tension created by Tarkov’s documented raid stakes.
A practical raid mindset for each game
Approach for a new ARC Raiders player
- Start with the lowest-risk kit available. Use a free loadout when the current build offers one, so your first runs teach movement and extraction without consuming your preferred equipment.
- Set one objective for the raid. Learn where to find a target, identify an extraction route and leave once the objective is complete instead of treating every run as a demand to maximize loot.
- Read the environment for ARC activity. Machines are an explicit threat. If a fight is drawing attention or consuming too many resources, disengage and change route.
- Decide how much player contact you want. Encounters vary, so avoid assuming that every visible player must be challenged. Cooperation, evasion and extraction are all compatible with the game’s PvPvE framing.
- Use failed runs as progression. Objectives can grant skill points even when extraction fails, according to Xbox Wire’s preview, so record what the failed route taught you before changing your plan.
Approach for a new Tarkov player
- Define the extraction plan before entering. Because extraction determines whether loot is retained, know your intended exit and a backup route before committing to a long search.
- Assume every fight has a medical cost. The store description highlights bleeding and limb damage. Do not treat surviving the first exchange as proof that the raid is secure.
- Separate “valuable” from “worth the risk.” The longer you stay, the more opportunities you create for another player or Scav to end the run. Leave when the expected gain no longer justifies the documented death-and-loot risk.
- Learn the first-person information game. Move deliberately, watch sightlines and use sound and cover to compensate for what the camera cannot show.
- Verify current systems in the live game. Detailed rules for insurance, secure containers, wipe cadence and mode-specific progression are not established by the evidence used here, and they should not be assumed from an older guide.
Progression and failure: the key philosophical difference
ARC Raiders’ documented free-loadout and objective-skill systems soften the link between a single failed run and long-term advancement. A player can lose the immediate haul yet still gain skill points from completed objectives. This design supports experimentation, especially for someone learning extraction conventions for the first time.
Best Value
Tarkov’s published pitch ties success more tightly to the raid outcome: death threatens the run, and extraction is what preserves loot. That creates a stronger pressure to make conservative choices, recognize when to stop searching and value survival over one more engagement. It can be deeply rewarding for players who want those stakes, but the same pressure is why reviewers often describe Tarkov as less casual.
Platforms, release dates and live-service caveats
Nexon announced ARC Raiders for PC and consoles with a worldwide launch date of October 30, 2025. The official site frames it as cross-platform, and Steam lists online PvP, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. The site also carried live event information when checked; event schedules and seasonal features are therefore volatile.
Escape from Tarkov’s Steam listing identifies a Windows PC game and gives November 15, 2025 as its Steam release date, along with system requirements. Requirements can change and do not guarantee a particular frame rate on every computer. Neither listing should be treated as a permanent statement of regional pricing, editions or service availability. Check your local platform page immediately before purchase.

Choose ARC Raiders if…
- You want an extraction loop with a visible PvE machine threat as well as rival players.
- You prefer a third-person camera and online co-op options.
- You are new to extraction shooters and value free entry kits or progression from objectives even after a failed extraction.
- You want encounter frequency to vary rather than entering every run expecting constant player combat.
- You are comfortable with a live game whose events, maps and balance may change.
Choose Escape from Tarkov if…
- You want first-person extraction combat with severe raid consequences.
- Bleeding, limb damage and the possibility of losing loot on failed extraction are features you find motivating rather than discouraging.
- You prefer a survival problem centered on PMCs, Scavs, positioning and information discipline.
- You are willing to accept a steeper learning curve and less forgiving mistakes.
- You are playing on Windows and can verify current system requirements for your hardware.
What this comparison can and cannot establish
The documented mechanics support a qualitative distinction, not a universal difficulty verdict. There is no cited common scale comparing the games, no controlled survival-rate study and no verified learning-time benchmark. Store review counts and percentages are snapshots, not measures of difficulty. Individual results will depend on prior shooter experience, group size, tolerance for losing progress, preferred camera perspective and comfort with PvE pressure.
ARC Raiders’ maps, events, balance and live-service features can change after the October 2026 information date. Tarkov’s requirements and storefront details can also change. Recheck official platform pages and current in-game documentation for any decision involving a specific edition, price, progression rule or technical expectation.
Bottom line
ARC Raiders is the safer recommendation for someone asking, “Is there an extraction shooter I can learn without every mistake feeling catastrophic?” Its third-person PvPvE format, machine encounters, free-loadout option and objective-based skill progress make the entry experience more forgiving according to launch-period coverage. Escape from Tarkov is the better fit for a player who specifically wants first-person raids where injury, death and failed extraction threaten the value of the run. Calling Tarkov harder is a well-supported interpretation of those stakes and reviewer descriptions, but it is not an objective score that overrides every player’s experience.
