ARC Raiders PvE and PvPvE explained: progression, loot and strategy in the October 2026 test

ARC Raiders’ normal experience is PvPvE: you fight or evade ARC machines while other Raiders can attack at any time. During the limited October 13–20, 2026 beta test, a PvE queue removes player damage but keeps extraction risk, machine combat, shared progression and mixed solo, duo and trio matchmaking. PvE is safer for learning, quests and materials; PvPvE offers slightly higher baseline loot and is the only place to practice the full human-threat game.

What PvE and PvPvE mean in ARC Raiders

ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure. You enter the surface with a loadout, scavenge materials and equipment, complete objectives, then reach an extraction point before danger overwhelms you. The danger normally comes from two directions: ARC machines controlled by the game and human Raiders who may cooperate, ignore you or attack for your gear. Embark’s official description summarizes that premise as scavenging the surface while machines and Raiders prey on others.

That combination is what “PvPvE” means: player versus player versus environment. A machine fight can reveal your position through noise; another squad can arrive while you are healing; and an extraction route that was safe a minute ago can become a contested choke point. PvE keeps the environmental side of the equation but removes damage from other players.

PvPvE is the core format

In the standard queue, every decision includes the possibility of a human ambush. You decide whether a loud machine fight is worth the time, whether to reveal your route by using an extraction point, and whether a nearby Raider is a potential ally or a threat. The uncertainty is not an occasional event layered onto a co-op mode; it is the defining pressure of the normal format.

PvE is a temporary beta queue

For the current beta, Embark is testing a matchmaking toggle from October 13 through October 20, 2026. The toggle lets you select the classic PvPvE experience or a PvE queue focused on co-op play against ARC. Embark says the toggle will be removed when the test ends and has not promised a permanent PvE mode. Executive producer Aleks put the uncertainty plainly: “It’s possible that this will not work. This test is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future.”

Exactly what changes in the PvE test

No player-to-player damage

PvE sessions disable player damage. Other Raiders can be present and can cooperate, but they cannot directly harm you. ARC machines, environmental hazards, bad positioning, noise and a mistimed extraction remain real threats. You still have to manage health, ammunition and the time needed to leave with your haul.

Solos, duos and trios share the session

The PvE queue does not create separate matchmaking pools for party size. Solo players, duos and trios are placed in the same PvE session. That makes the queue more social than a strictly solo mode, but it also means you should not assume every friendly group has the same number of players as yours. Since friendly fire is absent, the asymmetry is mainly about who can help clear machines, carry supplies and revive or support teammates.

Lower overall loot value

Embark is reducing overall loot value in PvE to compensate for the safety of removing hostile players. PvPvE sessions receive slightly higher baseline loot values. The published rules do not give a universal percentage reduction, so the practical conclusion is comparative rather than exact: PvE is safer for collecting, but PvPvE pays a little better at baseline for accepting human risk.

Four high-tension conditions are excluded

The test excludes Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate. Embark describes these conditions as dependent on tension and uncertainty about other players, so they are not part of the no-player-damage experiment. PvPvE retains the normal condition pool, subject to the live rotation.

PvE does not alter your PvPvE rating

Playing PvE does not change your PvPvE matchmaking rating. You can use the test queue to learn maps or complete tasks without lowering or raising the rating used for the competitive human-threat queue. PvPvE matches continue to use the normal rating system.

PvE versus PvPvE at a glance

Decision axis PvE beta PvPvE
Main opposition ARC machines and environmental danger ARC machines plus hostile or unpredictable Raiders
Player damage Disabled Enabled in the normal format
Party sizes Solos, duos and trios in one queue Normal live matchmaking rules
Best use Learn maps, complete quests, gather materials and practice machine fights Practice ambush awareness, contest valuable routes and pursue higher baseline loot
Carried-gear risk ARC and extraction risk remain; other players cannot damage you Full player threat plus ARC and extraction risk
Economy Lower overall loot value during the test Slightly higher baseline loot value
Matchmaking rating Does not affect PvPvE rating Normal PvPvE rating applies
Condition access Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate excluded from the test Full normal condition pool, subject to live rotation

Does PvE have separate progression?

No. The test is not introducing a second progression track. Embark says its intent is to provide an alternative to PvP encounters, not to test new PvE progression. Your broader ARC Raiders progression remains tied to what you do on the surface and what you bring out.

XP and the three skill trees

Topside actions award XP. That XP unlocks perks in three skill trees: Conditioning, Mobility and Survival. The trees shape how your character handles the expedition, so a PvE run can still contribute to the same long-term build decisions as a PvPvE run. Choosing PvE does not create a separate character or reset those unlocks.

  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout

Gear, crafting and settlement resources

Progression also includes crafting, equipment and settlement resources. Maps have distinct resource types and extraction points, so route planning matters even when no human can shoot you. Epic’s guide documents four maps with separate queues, unique landmarks and different loot and resource profiles. Learning which map supplies a needed material can make a lower-pressure PvE run useful even when its sale value is reduced.

What happens to your loadout on elimination?

A loadout can include an augment, a shield, up to two weapons, ammunition and consumables. If you are eliminated, you lose carried equipment except items placed in Safe Pocket slots. That rule applies to the extraction economy, not just to PvPvE combat. PvE removes one source of death but does not make a failed run consequence-free: ARC damage, a dangerous route or a missed extraction can still cost the gear you carried.

Free Loadouts are a low-risk option

A Free Loadout supplies low-tier gear for a low-risk resource run, but it does not include Safe Pockets. Use it when you need to rebuild basic supplies or learn a route without risking your preferred weapons. Because Safe Pockets are removed from this option, valuable items carried in a Free Loadout remain exposed if the run ends in elimination.

How the two modes change your strategy

Use PvE as an onboarding and questing environment

PvE is the more efficient choice when your immediate goal is familiarity rather than maximum value. With no player damage, you can study landmarks, test how ARC enemies react, learn extraction locations and complete quests without constantly calculating whether a second squad is watching. That does not make the mode effortless: machine aggro, sound, line of sight and extraction timing still punish careless play.

  • Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
  1. Start with a modest loadout. Bring equipment you can replace. Keep the most valuable materials in Safe Pocket slots when the loadout provides them.
  2. Pick one learning objective. For example, identify a map landmark, test a machine’s attack pattern or locate a specific resource route.
  3. Control noise. A machine fight can attract nearby Raiders even when they cannot damage you; they may still occupy the same route and compete for extraction space or resources.
  4. Leave before the pack is full. Lower loot value does not remove the need to extract. A successful modest haul advances your account more reliably than a greedy failed run.

Use PvPvE to train for human uncertainty

PvPvE is the correct environment when you want the complete ARC Raiders skill set. You must read movement, recognize ambush locations, decide when to disengage and judge whether a contested resource or extraction point is worth exposing your team. The slightly higher baseline loot value also compensates for that extra variance.

  • Approach noisy objectives as if another squad heard them.
  • Keep cover and an alternate extraction route in mind before starting a fight.
  • Do not assume a neutral Raider is friendly because they have not fired yet.
  • Reserve ammunition and healing for the possibility of a second encounter after an ARC fight.
  • Extract when the value of your carried gear exceeds the expected gain from staying.

Why PvE is not simply “easy mode”

PvE removes the most unpredictable opponent, but it does not remove the extraction structure. ARC machines can still force you into the open, drain ammunition and delay you until an extraction opportunity becomes dangerous. You also miss the pressure of human opponents, so a player who spends all their time in PvE may know the maps yet still be unprepared for a real ambush when returning to PvPvE. Treat PvE as controlled practice, not a complete substitute for learning player behavior.

Should you play solo PvE or PvPvE?

Choose PvE first if you are new or rebuilding

Solo players benefit from PvE when they need to learn a map’s landmarks, gather a particular material, or complete a quest without fighting for every route. The mixed-party queue means other friendly players may be present, so you can still observe how groups move through a location. The absence of player damage gives you room to practice machine engagements and extraction timing before adding human opponents.

Choose PvPvE when your goal is improvement under pressure

Play PvPvE if your priority is higher baseline loot, contesting valuable routes or developing the awareness needed for end-to-end extraction runs. Solo play is less forgiving because a single ambush can end the run, but that is also the clearest way to practice sound discipline, cover usage and disengagement decisions.

For duos and trios, decide by the group’s objective

A group that wants to teach a new player, finish quests or test a machine strategy should begin in PvE. A coordinated group seeking stronger economic returns and realistic combat practice should use PvPvE. Because PvE mixes party sizes, a trio should not expect every other group to be a trio, and a duo should not interpret the absence of player damage as permission to ignore positioning around machines.

How progression continues beyond individual runs

Expeditions are an optional reset loop

Long-term progression is not limited to stacking gear. PC Gamer reports that Expeditions act as a prestige-style reset: an Expedition resets much of your progression, preserves cosmetics and grants carry-over advantages. The first Expedition requires level 20. Since Expedition rules and schedules can change, review the current project screen in-game before committing materials or choosing the reset.

This makes mode choice a short-term versus long-term decision. PvE can help you reach objectives and understand resource routes; PvPvE can provide more valuable baseline runs and teach the threat awareness needed to protect those gains. Neither queue creates a separate Expedition track.

Why Embark is testing PvE now—and what the numbers do and do not prove

Embark published a player breakdown of 37% friendly co-op players, 27% mixed players and 34% pure PvP players in 2026. In the same material, 51% of the surveyed player base expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. Those figures explain why a toggle test is being run, but they are not a guarantee that a permanent queue will ship. The test is specifically measuring whether an alternative to PvP encounters can work without undermining the extraction economy or the identity of the main mode.

The design trade-off is visible in the rules: safer sessions have lower loot value, some high-tension conditions are removed, and PvE rating is isolated from PvPvE rating. These are balancing measures for the experiment, not evidence that the final game will use exactly the same structure if a permanent mode is created.

A practical decision rule for your next drop

  1. Need map knowledge, a quest, or a specific material? Select PvE while the October test is available.
  2. Need to maximize baseline haul value? Select PvPvE and accept the possibility of losing your carried gear to another Raider.
  3. Want to practice machine combat only? Use PvE, but keep noise and extraction discipline because those threats remain.
  4. Want to practice ambushes, contested routes and escape decisions? Use PvPvE; PvE cannot reproduce that pressure.
  5. Worried about your PvPvE rating? The PvE test does not change it.
  6. Considering an Expedition? Check the live project requirements first; the first reported threshold is level 20 and the reset affects much of your progression.

The clearest summary is functional rather than ideological: PvE is the lower-pressure environment for learning, quests and resource gathering, while PvPvE is the full ARC Raiders experience for human-threat practice and slightly better baseline value. Both still depend on the same extraction fundamentals—loadout planning, Safe Pocket management, route knowledge and getting out alive.
