You still scavenge a dangerous surface, evade machines, contend with rival Raiders and extract valuable loot, but Embark is deliberately building more ways to cooperate instead of forcing every encounter into a firefight.
That design is attracting an audience that wants extraction stakes without Escape from Tarkov’s uncompromising intensity. The contrast is not a claim that one game is universally better; it is a difference in priorities, communication and accessibility.

Why ARC Raiders feels like the game Tarkov players wish they had
A tense extraction loop with less social friction
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure. Raiders search the surface for valuables, survive hostile machines and rival players, then try to leave with their loot. That is the same broad risk-and-reward structure that makes extraction games compelling, but the surrounding design gives players more ways to approach an encounter.

Embark design lead Virgil Watkins said the team was pleased to attract people who wanted to “play more socially or lean more toward the PvE side of things.” Proximity voice and instruments are part of that philosophy: players can signal, talk or interact without automatically shooting the other person. A tense meeting can become cooperation rather than an immediate duel.

“Casual” does not mean consequence-free
Escape from Tarkov creator Nikita Buyanov described ARC Raiders as “an extraction shooter for casual people.” He contrasted that with his own goal: “We want to have the most painful, most challenging, and most rewarding experience.” Those remarks explain the jealousy factor better than a simple difficulty ranking. ARC Raiders is aiming for a broader on-ramp, while Tarkov continues to emphasize maximum hardship and reward.
How the ARC Raiders loop works
- Enter the surface. You deploy as a Raider in a multiplayer session.
- Scavenge. Search for useful and valuable loot while navigating a dangerous environment.
- Manage threats. Machines and rival Raiders can both end your run.
- Decide how to interact. Proximity voice, instruments and cooperation allow non-combat approaches when the situation permits.
- Extract. Reach an extraction point and leave with what you recovered.
The available material does not establish a complete, current comparison of weapon systems, inventory management, queue times or death penalties between the two games. It does establish the central distinction: ARC Raiders preserves PvPvE extraction pressure while explicitly supporting social and PvE-leaning play.

Does ARC Raiders have PvE?
Yes, its core format includes machine enemies alongside rival players, making it a PvPvE experience rather than a purely player-versus-player shooter. Embark has also discussed attracting players who prefer collaborative or PvE play. The official game page currently lists a PvE Toggle Beta Test scheduled for October 13–20, 2026. Because that is a time-limited live-service test, its rules and future availability can change.
Does ARC Raiders support cross-play?
ARC Raiders supports cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The official listing includes Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW. That gives a squad more flexibility than a platform-locked launch and makes the game available on PS5, PC and current Xbox consoles, with cloud access through GeForce NOW.

The table shows why “more casual Escape from Tarkov” is a useful shorthand but not a full review. ARC Raiders’ stated design goals support that description; they do not prove that every system is easier or that every run carries less risk.

How big has ARC Raiders become?
Nexon reported more than 12.4 million units sold and 960,000 concurrent players on January 13, 2026, ten weeks after the October 30, 2025 launch. Those are publisher-reported figures, not an independent measurement, but they show that the lower-friction approach has reached a substantial audience.
Embark also reported just over one million Expedition participants. Of those players, 40%–45% completed all five skill points. Expeditions therefore appear to be drawing significant engagement, while the completion rate indicates that the full progression path remains a commitment rather than an automatic finish for everyone.

What this means if you already play Tarkov
You may prefer ARC Raiders if you want more social options
Choose ARC Raiders when you want to talk to nearby players, cooperate with strangers, fight machines alongside human opponents and play with friends on different supported platforms. Its design gives a squad more opportunities to decide whether an encounter becomes a battle.
You may still prefer Tarkov if maximum punishment is the point
If your favorite part of extraction games is severe friction, demanding mastery and the strongest possible sense of danger, Buyanov’s description of Tarkov points toward a different audience. ARC Raiders is not presented as a replacement for that experience; it is an alternative for players who want extraction tension without making every interaction as punishing.
What to check before joining
- Confirm the edition and platform you intend to use: Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X|S or GeForce NOW.
- Check whether your friends’ platforms are supported for the current cross-play configuration.
- Review the official live-service page for changes to the October 13–20, 2026 PvE Toggle Beta Test or other temporary features.
- Use a headset if you plan to rely on proximity voice; communication is a documented part of the social design.
- Do not assume that “casual” removes extraction risk. You still have to survive machines and rival Raiders and successfully leave with your loot.
The bottom line for Tarkov players
ARC Raiders gives Escape from Tarkov players a reason to be jealous by treating extraction as a social sandbox as well as a test of aim and endurance. Its cross-play reach, machine-focused PvE threats, proximity communication and cooperative tools lower the barrier to entry without removing the core gamble of extracting with loot. Tarkov remains the clearer choice for players who want the most punishing version of the genre; ARC Raiders is the more inviting option for players who want tension, teamwork and the freedom to avoid a fight when possible.
