Choose the Grappling Hook when you need to climb, descend, swing, or change direction around an anchor. Choose the Zipline when you can place a clean, deliberate connection between two useful points. In Frozen Trail 2.0, those are different jobs rather than two versions of the same mobility item. The Grappling Hook is personal, flexible movement; the Zipline is a committed route you place in the world.
The short answer
The Grappling Hook is the better carry for unpredictable terrain, vertical buildings, roof-to-roof movement, and routes that may need a midair correction. A preview of the item published by PC Gamer on October 7, 2026, describes a simulated rope that lets the player climb, descend, swing, and even interact with flying ARC. The hook point works as a pivot, so your movement is organized around an anchor rather than a fixed line.

The Zipline is the better choice when you already know the two endpoints you want to connect. The current community item page lists a 60 m range and attachment to most surfaces. Once placed, it gives you a defined route instead of the Grappling Hook’s three-dimensional swing space. That simplicity is useful, but it also means placement matters: Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 notes warn that a Zipline breaks if it intersects something after placement.

Grappling Hook and Zipline at a glance
| Tool | Primary movement | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grappling Hook | Anchor-based climbing, descent, swinging and personal repositioning | Vertical routes, changing direction, roof movement and improvised escapes | Preview reports rope tangling around protruding balconies and occasional failure to grab a ledge |
| Zipline | A placed route between two locations | A known, unobstructed connection between useful endpoints | Official notes say it breaks when it intersects something after placement |
The table describes roles, not measured performance. Current sources do not establish a head-to-head travel time, sound level, visibility, team-reuse behavior, cooldown, or combat-survivability advantage for either tool.
What the Grappling Hook actually does
It behaves like a rope, not a single-button pull
Morgan Park, a PC Gamer staff writer who tried the item in a preview session published October 7, 2026, described the Grappling Hook as a simulated rope. That distinction matters. A simple pull-to-target grapple would give you one predictable displacement. The previewed Grappling Hook instead creates a line to an anchor and lets you work around that anchor.
Park reported climbing buildings, swinging between rooftops, descending from height, and interacting with flying ARC. The hook point acts as a pivot: you can move upward or downward along the rope and use momentum to swing. This makes the tool useful when the destination is not directly in front of you or when a straight route would leave you exposed.
Redeployment increases route flexibility
During that preview, Park reported being able to redeploy the Grappling Hook in midair and chain swings without a cooldown or use limit. That observation belongs to the preview build and should not be treated as a permanent live-service specification. It does, however, explain why the tool is the flexible option in the comparison: you can adjust the next anchor while already moving instead of committing to one installed line.
Midair redeployment is especially relevant for broken-up urban geometry. A first anchor can lift you to a roofline, a second can redirect you toward another structure, and a later anchor can help you descend on the far side. The mechanic rewards players who read anchor points and momentum rather than simply selecting the most distant target.

Expect physics quirks
The same preview found several execution problems. The rope sometimes tangled around protruding balconies. Park also reached the top of a structure without successfully grabbing the ledge, forcing a recovery rather than a clean mantle. The hook did not reliably attach to a large ARC that appeared to be outside the intended climbable set.
Those reports make the Grappling Hook versatile but not frictionless. Leave room for the rope to clear architectural lips, avoid assuming that touching a roof guarantees a ledge grab, and keep a fallback route in mind when the anchor behaves unexpectedly. Its strength is the number of movement options it offers, not perfect automation.
What the Zipline actually does
It creates a committed connection
The current community-maintained ARC Raiders item page describes Zipline as a Rare utility that can be deployed between two locations. It lists a 60 m range and attachment to most surfaces. Those are community reference values, last modified October 8, 2026, and should be checked against the live client because item data can change between patches.
Unlike the Grappling Hook, the Zipline does not center movement on a pivot or a sequence of swings. You choose two useful points, place the line, and use the resulting connection. That makes it easier to plan when the terrain offers a clear start and finish: a street to a roof, one side of a gap to the other, or a known approach to an extraction route.
Placement is the critical skill
Frozen Trail 2.0 adds an explicit failure condition. Embark’s October 8, 2026 update notes state that Ziplines break when they intersect something after placement. A line that appears valid from the firing position can therefore fail if its path clips an intervening structure or object.

Before committing, inspect the full corridor between both endpoints. Check balconies, roof equipment, beams, signs, terrain lips, and other geometry that could cross the cable. The Zipline’s value comes from reliability after placement, so a few seconds spent confirming a clear path is part of using the item correctly.
What changed in Frozen Trail 2.0
Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 update, posted October 8, 2026, adds the Grappling Hook to the ARC Raiders item roster. The official Steam update post dated the same day also lists the Grappling Hook as a new item. The update notes place the new item in a broader effort to give personal mobility tools clearer identities. Embark’s ARC Raiders Team wrote: “As we added more personal mobility items, it became clear we needed to begin differentiating them to a greater degree.”
That statement describes the design direction; it does not rank Grappling Hook above Zipline. The same notes separately change Snap Hook, an existing personal mobility item, so its numbers must not be transferred to the new Grappling Hook.
How to decide which tool to carry
Choose Grappling Hook for changing direction
- The route includes several elevations rather than one clean crossing.
- You may need to swing around a corner, descend on the far side, or redirect while airborne.
- Buildings, rooftops, or vertical shafts offer multiple possible anchors.
- You expect the route to change after you see enemies, ARC, or blocked geometry.
- You are comfortable correcting momentum and recovering from an imperfect ledge approach.
These conditions favor personal movement. The hook lets you solve the route one anchor at a time, and the previewed redeployment behavior supports chaining those decisions.
Choose Zipline for a known connection
- You can identify two endpoints that are both useful and within the listed 60 m range.
- The corridor between them is clear of intersecting geometry.
- You want a repeatable line rather than a swing that depends on momentum and anchor choice.
- Your route is planned before deployment and is unlikely to need a midair change of direction.
The Zipline’s commitment is an advantage in this situation. Once the endpoints and corridor are sound, the tool expresses the route directly instead of asking you to manage a rope pivot.

When neither choice answers the question
Do not use either item as a substitute for an unverified combat statistic. The available material does not establish whether one tool is faster, quieter, less visible, safer from enemy fire, more reusable by teammates, or more survivable in a fight. If that information determines your loadout, treat it as an open question for the current client rather than relying on older guides or anecdotes.
Using the Grappling Hook: a practical procedure
- Read the route before firing. Identify a first anchor that gives you useful height or lateral reach, then note at least one fallback surface in case the rope tangles or the ledge grab fails.
- Pick an anchor with clearance. Prefer surfaces that leave the rope away from balconies, signs, beams, and other protrusions. The previewed tangling behavior makes a technically reachable but cluttered anchor a poor choice.
- Control the approach. Use the rope as a pivot for climbing or descent rather than assuming the hook will place you directly on the destination. Let the anchor do the work while you manage your position around it.
- Use momentum for a swing. When the destination is offset, build a controlled arc instead of aiming only at the endpoint. This is the movement pattern that separates the Grappling Hook from a direct pull.
- Check the ledge before releasing. Reaching roof height did not always produce a ledge grab in the preview. If the mantle is uncertain, prepare to remain on the rope, redeploy, or move to a safer surface.
- Redeploy only when the next anchor is clear. The preview reported midair redeployment without a cooldown or use limit, but that behavior was observed in a pre-release session. Use it as a technique, not as a guaranteed permanent rule.
- Recover deliberately. If the rope catches on geometry or an intended ARC attachment fails, stop treating the first anchor as mandatory. Shift to the fallback surface or disengage rather than forcing a bad swing.
Using the Zipline: a placement procedure
- Define both endpoints. Choose a start and destination that remain useful even if the surrounding fight changes. The item is most valuable when the connection solves a specific route problem.
- Confirm distance. The community item page lists a 60 m range. Because that value is community-maintained and patch-sensitive, verify the live placement indicator rather than relying on a measurement from an older build.
- Trace the entire cable path. Look for balconies, beams, signs, roof machinery, terrain, and other objects that could intersect the line. Frozen Trail 2.0 specifically warns that an intersecting Zipline breaks after placement.
- Prefer broad attachment surfaces. The item page lists attachment to most surfaces, but a broad, unobstructed surface gives you more margin than a narrow edge or decorative piece.
- Place only after the corridor is clear. A valid endpoint does not make an invalid path safe. Treat the line between the endpoints as a separate placement check.
- Reassess after placement. If the line breaks, do not assume the destination is unreachable. Move to a different pair of endpoints or switch to the Grappling Hook if the route now requires climbing or redirection.
Access and crafting information
PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 Nomadic Crafting guide lists both Grappling Hook and Zipline among the items unlocked by Nomadic Crafting. That list provides access context, but it is secondary reporting rather than a substitute for the current in-game unlock screen.
The community Zipline item page lists one Steel Cable plus one Mechanical Component at Utility Station 2 as its crafting requirement. Because this is community reference data and recipes are vulnerable to patch changes, confirm the ingredients and station requirement in the live client before planning a loadout around them.
No authoritative current source in the available material establishes the Grappling Hook’s exact crafting ingredients, carry cost, durability, cooldown, or power requirement. Do not import the Zipline recipe or Snap Hook costs into the Grappling Hook’s description.

Do not confuse Grappling Hook with Snap Hook
Frozen Trail 2.0 also revises Snap Hook, but Snap Hook is a separate item. Embark’s official notes reduce its range from 20 m to 18 m, increase durability consumption from 2% to 4% per use, and raise its power cost from 50 to 60. The notes describe Snap Hook as a burst-mobility tool that closes distance or traverses a location with more commitment.
Best Value
| Snap Hook value | Before Frozen Trail 2.0 | Frozen Trail 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 20 m | 18 m |
| Durability consumed per use | 2% | 4% |
| Power cost | 50 | 60 |
These figures describe Snap Hook only. They are not Grappling Hook statistics, and they do not measure the Grappling Hook against the Zipline. Keeping the three items separate prevents a common but consequential loadout mistake: treating a change to one personal-mobility tool as a balance change to all of them.
What is still not established
The current material does not provide a reliable side-by-side test for precise travel speed, sound, visibility, exposure while moving, team reuse, cooldown, durability, carry burden, or survivability. It also does not provide a named population statistic, win rate, or usage rate showing that one item produces better outcomes.
The Grappling Hook’s reported no-cooldown, no-use-limit redeployment comes from a preview session, not a promise that every live build will retain that behavior. The Zipline’s 60 m range and listed recipe come from a community-maintained page and should be rechecked after patches. These qualifications do not erase the tools’ different identities; they define where the comparison can be confident and where it cannot.
A loadout checklist
Before taking the Grappling Hook
- Mark at least two viable anchors for the first movement.
- Look for balconies and protrusions that could catch the rope.
- Plan what you will do if the ledge grab fails.
- Expect to manage momentum rather than receive a straight-line pull.
- Use the item when vertical access or redirection matters more than a fixed route.
Before taking the Zipline
- Identify both endpoints and confirm they are useful for the whole route.
- Check the listed range against the current placement indicator.
- Inspect the full cable corridor for intersecting geometry.
- Place only when the path is clear, because an intersection can break the line.
- Use it when a repeatable connection is more valuable than personal swing control.
Bottom line for “which is better to carry”
There is no universal winner. The Grappling Hook is the stronger general-purpose answer when the map asks you to climb, swing, descend, or change direction. The Zipline is the stronger route-building answer when two points are obvious and the cable can pass cleanly between them. Make the decision from the geometry in front of you: personal maneuvering calls for Grappling Hook; a clear endpoint-to-endpoint connection calls for Zipline.
