You deploy to the surface, search for materials and other useful loot, pursue contracts or personal objectives, and respond to hostile ARC machines and rival Raiders. If you reach an extraction point, the haul can fund later skills, workshop improvements, crafting and loadouts. If you are eliminated before extracting, the raid’s immediate rewards are at risk.
Progression is therefore more than a level bar. It combines Raider levels and skills, inventory and gear, workshop and crafting capability, contracts, blueprints and the choices you make about what to carry into each deployment. A separate, voluntary Expedition Project eventually lets you reset character-bound progress for long-term metagame rewards.

What ARC Raiders is and why extraction matters
ARC Raiders takes place on a future Earth where the surface is dangerous and valuable. The official game description frames the goal as scavenging the surface to survive while watching for both machines and Raiders who may prey on other players. That combination creates a player-versus-environment-versus-player (PvEvP) loop: computer-controlled ARC threats can expose your position or consume resources, while human opponents can ambush you, contest loot and use the same extraction routes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA deployment has two different values. During the raid, a weapon, gadget, contract objective or rare material may help you solve the immediate situation. After extraction, those items can support future crafting, workshop development or a stronger loadout. Extraction is the conversion point between temporary risk and persistent progress. A successful fight that leaves you unable to escape may still produce no lasting benefit.

The raid loop, from hangar to extraction
1. Prepare a Raider in the hangar
Before deployment, decide how much value you are willing to risk. The hangar is where you prepare facilities, contracts, weapons, gadgets and survival items. A high-value loadout may improve your ability to handle an ARC encounter, but losing it can make the next deployment harder. A cheaper setup may be appropriate when you are learning a map, testing an objective or rebuilding supplies.
- Choose a purpose: a contract, a material-gathering run, a route-learning trip or a deliberately cautious extraction.
- Match equipment to that purpose: bring the weapons, gadgets and survival items that solve the threats you actually expect rather than filling every slot with expensive gear.
- Keep a recovery plan: retain enough resources in your broader inventory or workshop economy to make another deployment after a bad result.
2. Deploy and establish priorities
Once on the surface, identify the most important objective before collecting everything in sight. Valuable loot is not automatically useful loot: heavy or rare items can slow decision-making, consume carrying capacity or tempt you to stay in a dangerous area too long. Decide which materials, contract items or equipment justify additional exposure.
3. Read ARC and Raider threats together
ARC machines create pressure even when no human opponent is visible. Their presence can force a detour, attract attention or make a normally safe search area hazardous. Other Raiders add uncertainty: they may avoid you, cooperate briefly, set an ambush or arrive at the same objective. Treat every loud engagement as a possible signal to nearby players and leave room in your plan for a sudden fight or retreat.
4. Convert the haul into lasting progress
Extraction points are the banking step. Reaching one with the desired loot turns a risky deployment into resources for later levels, skills, crafting, workshop work or another loadout. The official game framing emphasizes extracting valuable loot, not merely discovering it. A route that yields less but has a credible exit can be better than a richer route that leaves no time or cover for extraction.
5. Leave before the risk curve turns against you
Do not wait for a perfect inventory. Once the main objective is complete, reassess ammunition, health, remaining gadgets, nearby threats and the distance to an extraction point. Carrying one more item can be rational when the route is clear; it is usually poor risk management when you are already damaged, being pursued or approaching a contested pad.

Extraction mechanics and practical timing
Extraction pads can rotate, according to the unofficial ARC Raiders Hub beginner guide, so a route that worked previously may not be available in the next deployment. Treat that information as community guidance rather than an immutable rule because live-service patches can alter locations and behavior. Check the current map and allow time to move to an alternative pad if the first choice becomes unsafe.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The same guide describes a 20-second extraction countdown and recommends saving an EMP for that window. This is a version-specific community tactic, not a guaranteed permanent mechanic. If the countdown is interrupted by an ARC threat or another Raider, an EMP may create a brief opportunity to complete the departure, but using it earlier may be the correct choice when it prevents a larger fight. Confirm the current countdown and gadget behavior in your build.
- Choose an exit before you are overloaded. Use the map and current conditions to identify a primary pad and a fallback route.
- Approach with information. Listen for combat, machine activity and signs that another squad is already waiting. Avoid announcing your arrival through an unnecessary fight.
- Stage near cover, not on the pad itself. Keep a retreat line while you check whether the extraction area is contested.
- Start the extraction only when the risk is acceptable. Be ready to move if the area changes rather than treating the button press as a guarantee.
- Protect the countdown. If the current version still uses a 20-second timer, reserve an EMP or another defensive option for the final window when that is more valuable than using it during the approach.
- Leave with the secured haul. Once the extraction completes, the items become available for future progression; until then, they remain raid risk.
What counts as progression in ARC Raiders?
Embark’s Expedition explanation describes several character-progress systems rather than a single advancement track. The following separation helps clarify what each system does and how often it is exposed to raid risk.
| Progression area | What it represents | How a deployment interacts with it |
|---|---|---|
| Raider levels and skills | Character advancement and abilities earned over time | Successful deployments and objectives can support growth; the Expedition reset removes character-bound levels and skills. |
| Inventory and gear | Weapons, gadgets, survival items and stored materials | Loot can expand your options after extraction, while items taken into a raid are exposed to loss. |
| Workshop | Facilities and the broader capability to prepare or improve resources | Workshop development improves future preparation; its progress is reset by an Expedition. |
| Crafting capabilities and blueprints | Recipes and the ability to turn resources into useful equipment | Materials and discoveries matter only after you secure them; crafting capability is character-bound for reset purposes. |
| Contracts and objectives | Short-term goals that give a deployment direction | They shape where you go and what risk you accept; the resulting rewards feed other progression systems. |
| Loadout decisions | The practical trade-off between power, cost and recoverability | Every deployment is a decision about how much current progress to risk for a better future position. |
| Metagame rewards | Cosmetics, awards, achievements, rankings and other status progress | These are designed to persist through an Expedition reset. |
How to make progression decisions during a raid
Prioritize guaranteed value over theoretical value
A contract item you can extract now often has more practical value than a rarer object that forces you through a contested area. Establish a minimum acceptable haul before deployment, then leave when it is secured. This prevents a successful run from becoming a loss caused by greed.
Separate rebuilding runs from upgrade runs
After losing a costly loadout, use a lower-risk deployment to restore basic supplies and materials. Save expensive equipment for objectives where its advantages materially improve your odds. This creates a sustainable cycle instead of alternating between over-equipped attempts and complete scarcity.
Use the workshop as a planning tool
Workshop facilities and crafting capabilities determine which materials are worth carrying home. Before a deployment, check what you can actually build or improve. A material with no near-term use may be less valuable than a common component needed for a repair, gadget or contract.

Treat contracts as route constraints
A contract can pull you toward a high-risk location. Decide whether its reward justifies the route before you commit. If ARC activity or rival Raiders make the original approach untenable, abandoning or postponing the objective can preserve more progression than forcing the attempt.
Expeditions: the voluntary reset at level 20
Embark design director Virgil’s Expedition announcement describes the first major Expedition Project as becoming available at level 20. An Expedition is not a mandatory global wipe. It is a voluntary project for players who want a fresh character-progress cycle and its associated rewards while accepting the loss of current character-bound development.
The announcement says the project repeats on a cycle of roughly eight weeks. “Roughly” matters: the interval is an approximate design cadence, not a promise that every cycle will begin on an identical date. Check current announcements for the active cycle, requirements and rewards.

Embark states that players lose anything inherent to their character’s progress. That includes:
- Raider levels
- Skills
- Items and inventory
- Workshop progress
- Crafting capabilities
These losses make the decision meaningful. A player who has recently assembled a valuable inventory or unlocked an important crafting capability may prefer to continue playing rather than reset immediately.
Progress that remains after the reset
The same announcement says the metagame layer is preserved. Cosmetics, whether earned or purchased, as well as awards, achievements, rankings and other progress rooted solely in the metagame or involving real money remain available. This allows an Expedition to reset the practical starting position without erasing a player’s identity, recognition or purchased content.

Onboarding after an Expedition
Post-Expedition players can skip much of the onboarding and tutorial sequence, including some early feature and map-unlock steps. The precise sequence can change, so treat this as a faster return to established play rather than a promise that every system is immediately unlocked.

Should you start an Expedition?
The right choice depends on how much you value a fresh progression cycle versus the convenience of your current character. Use this decision framework:
- Start now when you have reached level 20, understand the raid loop, and value the Expedition’s reset rewards more than your current levels, inventory, workshop and crafting state.
- Wait when you are still learning maps or extraction, have unfinished contracts that rely on your current capabilities, or would struggle to rebuild essential equipment.
- Continue without resetting when your available play time is limited and preserving an established character is more important than pursuing another full progression cycle.
- Plan around the cycle when an eight-week cadence is approaching: spend or extract valuable resources deliberately, finish high-priority objectives, and avoid assuming that a reset will preserve anything outside the stated metagame categories.
Because the Expedition is voluntary, there is no universal “correct” reset date. The design is intended to let highly engaged players restart regularly while allowing players with less time to keep their progress.
Squad play, platforms and live-service caveats
The ARC Raiders Hub beginner guide recommends trios as the practical squad shape. That is community advice, not a permanent rule; squad balance and matchmaking can change through patches or tests. Solo and other group experiences should be evaluated using the options available in your current build rather than assuming the guide’s recommendation is mandatory.
ARC Raiders is listed for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW, and the official site describes cross-platform social play. Platform availability does not by itself establish identical performance, controls or feature timing on every device. For a purchase or installation decision, verify the current edition, region and service requirements on the relevant platform storefront.

Correction: Set a departure threshold before the raid. Once it is met, leave unless the additional item has a clear, immediate use and a low-risk route.
Using defensive tools too early
Symptom: You reach an extraction countdown without an EMP or comparable option when the area becomes contested.
Correction: Reserve at least one response for the final approach when the current patch’s extraction behavior makes that worthwhile. Do not follow this as a rigid rule if an earlier use prevents certain death.
Confusing loot with progression
Symptom: You assume that finding an item means the account has benefited.
Correction: Remember that raid value is provisional until extraction. Route planning and survival are part of progression, not separate from it.
Resetting without a rebuild plan
Symptom: You begin an Expedition and discover that lost inventory, workshop state and crafting capabilities leave you unable to pursue your preferred objectives.
Correction: Before confirming the project, identify the early materials, contracts and loadouts you will need to regain momentum, and verify which onboarding steps can be skipped in the current cycle.
What the available evidence does not establish
There is no durable published average raid length, extraction-success rate or total number of hours required to complete progression in the material available for this explanation. Those figures would vary with map conditions, squad size, player skill, objectives and live-service changes, so they should not be treated as fixed benchmarks.
The practical takeaway
Play ARC Raiders as a sequence of risk decisions rather than a conventional level grind. Prepare a loadout you can afford to lose, choose a clear objective, account for both ARC machines and rival Raiders, identify an extraction route early and leave once the haul justifies the danger. Successful extractions feed levels, skills, inventory, workshop development and crafting. At level 20, the voluntary Expedition Project offers a roughly eight-week reset cycle: character-bound progress is removed, while cosmetics, achievements, rankings, awards and other metagame or real-money progress remain. That balance lets committed players start fresh without forcing every player to surrender an established character.
