For the clearest warning of campers and approaching ARC machines, start with a stereo headset, Effects Volume at 100%, Music and Dialogue at 0%, and Master Volume as high as comfortable. On PC, use FOV 80, disable motion blur, set RTX global illumination to Static, and lower fog, foliage, post-processing and effects while keeping view distance High or Epic. Treat Night Mode, upscaling and frame generation as testable choices rather than automatic wins: they can improve audibility or frame rate while reducing positional clarity or adding latency.

ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure set on a future Earth threatened by mechanized ARC units. In an extraction match, a setting that reveals a quiet footstep, a distant machine silhouette or a brief movement behind cover can matter more than a cinematic image. The right configuration cannot guarantee that you will detect every ambush, because hearing, display quality, hardware, frame time and game patches all change the result, but it can remove avoidable sources of confusion.

Build the audio foundation first

Use stereo headphones or a stereo headset

Use a properly connected stereo headset or a pair of stereo headphones rather than speakers. The physical separation between left and right ear gives you a more dependable sense of direction for footsteps, nearby movement, gunfire and machine sounds. PCGamesN notes that gaming headsets provide a much better sense of audio positioning than speakers. Keep any virtual-surround, bass-boost or “cinema” processing disabled while you establish a baseline; extra processing can change the cues you are trying to learn.

Start with an effects-first mixer

Effects carry the information needed to identify a threat: footsteps, combat, ARC machinery and environmental movement. A practical starting profile, published by Audio Radar in 2026, is:

Control Starting value Why it helps detection
Master Volume 100% Leaves the overall signal strong; reduce it if it is uncomfortable or distorts.
Effects Volume 100% Prioritizes footsteps, combat, machines and movement.
Music Volume 0% Removes a layer that can mask a quiet footstep or servo sound.
Dialogue Volume 0% Removes nonessential speech when threat detection is the priority.
Party Voice Chat 100% Keeps teammate callouts audible; lower it only if it overwhelms effects.
Proximity Voice Chat 100% Preserves nearby-player communication and warnings.

This is a starting point, not a hearing-safety instruction. Set Master Volume to a level you can tolerate for a full session, and do not compensate for a weak signal by listening at an unsafe level. If your headset has a hardware volume wheel, leave the in-game relationships intact and adjust the wheel for comfort.

Decide whether Night Mode helps your ears

Night Mode is an on/off option in the game menu. It reduces dynamic range, which can make quiet sounds such as footsteps easier to hear beside loud explosions. That compression has a cost: PC Gamer warns that Night Mode can muddy distance and positioning in some situations, while PCGamesN describes the quieter cues as easier to hear.

  • Keep Night Mode on if explosions or machine attacks routinely drown out footsteps, or if your hearing setup makes low-level sounds difficult to detect.
  • Keep Night Mode off if you can hear a sound but cannot tell whether it is close, far away, left, right, above or below. Natural level differences are useful for judging distance.
  • Do not decide from the menu alone. Test the same route and encounter with both settings; your headset, room noise and hearing profile determine which trade-off is better.

Control proximity-chat noise

Proximity chat is open by default, so an open microphone can add keyboard noise, breathing, fan noise or other voices to the same channel as movement cues. Use push-to-talk, as PCGamesN recommends, and choose a key you can press without interrupting movement. If you need an open mic, reduce its input sensitivity or move the microphone away from airflow and mechanical noise. This does not change the game’s positional audio, but it prevents your own communications from masking it.

PC graphics settings for earlier visual detection

The goal is not maximum detail. You want a stable frame time, a wide enough view and an image that does not hide a Raider or ARC unit in blur, fog or foliage. The following baseline combines settings used by ARC Status, GameSpot and PCGamesN.

Setting Detection-oriented value Trade-off
Field of view 80 Broadens peripheral vision without the excessive edge distortion that can make distant targets harder to read.
Motion blur Off Keeps a moving target and your own camera turn sharper.
RTX global illumination Static Reduces expensive lighting changes while retaining a consistent scene.
Volumetric fog Low Reduces atmospheric veiling that can obscure silhouettes and sightlines.
Foliage Low Removes small bushes and visual clutter; large hiding bushes remain.
Post-processing Low Limits effects that can soften or obscure edges.
Effects Low Reduces visual effects that compete with a target during combat.
View distance High or Epic Preserves recognition of distant Raiders and ARC units; costs performance.

Why FOV 80 is a useful starting point

An FOV of 80 gives you more peripheral context than a narrow view, which helps when a camper moves just outside your reticle or an ARC unit approaches from the side. Going wider is not automatically better: extreme FOV values make distant objects occupy fewer pixels and can distort the edges of the image. Begin at 80, then adjust in small increments if your monitor distance or preferred aim sensitivity demands it.

Remove blur and reduce visual obstruction

Disable motion blur first. It is a persistent source of softness during quick turns, exactly when you are trying to identify a moving silhouette. Set volumetric fog, post-processing and effects to Low when visibility and frame stability matter more than atmosphere. Low foliage removes small bushes and clutter, but it does not remove the large bushes that players can use as concealment; PC Gamer specifically reports that those larger hiding bushes are unaffected. You still need to clear likely cover with your crosshair and movement.

Keep view distance high when your hardware allows

View distance is the setting most directly tied to recognizing a distant Raider or ARC machine before it reaches effective range. GameSpot’s baseline uses High, while PCGamesN tested Epic. Use High as the sensible starting point; move to Epic if your frame rate and frame-time consistency remain acceptable. Lowering it may produce more frames, but it can also delay or simplify distant geometry, shortening the time you have to decide whether to engage, hide or extract.

Use upscaling deliberately

Choose DLSS Quality or Balanced, or FSR Balanced, before reducing the game’s internal resolution further. These modes can recover performance while retaining more detail than an aggressively low resolution scale. If the frame rate still fluctuates, lower resolution scaling gradually and check distant edges, foliage and signage after each change. A sharper but unstable image is often less useful than a slightly softer image with consistent frame delivery.

Understand frame generation’s latency cost

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate, but it may add input latency, particularly with mouse and keyboard. That delay matters when you are reacting to a sudden footstep or a machine appearing over a ridge. If you enable it, compare aiming and camera response in a quiet area and during a real fight. Disable it if the extra frames make your inputs feel behind the action; a lower native frame rate with direct response may produce better decisions.

Console settings on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S expose fewer individual graphics controls than PC. Use the highest available FOV, turn motion blur off, and adjust brightness only enough to reveal dark interiors. Raising brightness too far washes out highlights and can erase the contrast that separates a robot or player from a bright outdoor background. Because console options are more limited, audio tuning and disciplined scanning become even more important.

Choose a profile for your priority

Maximum positional clarity

Use stereo headphones, Effects 100%, Music and Dialogue 0%, and Night Mode off. On PC, keep FOV at 80, motion blur off, view distance High or Epic, and use Low fog, foliage, post-processing and effects. This profile preserves natural volume differences for judging where a sound came from and how far away it is.

Hard-to-hear footsteps

Keep the same mixer but test Night Mode on. It is most useful when loud combat consistently masks quiet movement. If you can hear footsteps but lose their direction or distance, switch it back off; the reduction in dynamic range is then hurting more than helping.

Unstable frame rate

Retain motion blur off and view distance at High if possible. Set RTX global illumination to Static and lower volumetric fog, foliage, post-processing and effects. Select DLSS Quality/Balanced or FSR Balanced, then reduce resolution scaling only as much as necessary. Treat frame generation as optional because of its possible latency.

Validate the settings instead of guessing

Audio Radar recommends checking a configuration in several different situations. Make the comparison repeatable: use the same headset volume, route, display brightness and sensitivity, and change only one setting at a time.

  1. Quiet area: stand still and listen for low-level environmental movement. Check whether Night Mode reveals detail or flattens the sense of distance.
  2. Outdoor route: move along a familiar path and look for distant silhouettes. Compare FOV 80 with your preferred alternative and check whether view distance preserves recognition.
  3. Machine fight: observe whether effects and combat sounds overwhelm footsteps. Try Night Mode both on and off, then keep the option that lets you identify direction without guesswork.
  4. Extraction approach: watch dark interiors, foliage edges and likely camper positions. Adjust brightness only enough to reveal interiors, and verify that highlights remain distinct.

After each change, ask four separate questions: Can I tell left from right? Can I estimate near versus far? Can I keep a target visible while turning? Does aiming respond immediately? A setting that improves one answer while damaging another is a trade-off, not a universal upgrade.

Performance reference and expectations

Numbers from one computer are not a promise for every system. In a 2025 PCGamesN test using an RTX 4070 at 1080p, ARC Raiders averaged 104 frames per second, with a 55 FPS 1% low. The 1% low is important for detection: brief frame-time drops during a fight can make a moving camper or ARC unit harder to track even when the average looks high. Use your own frame-time graph, not only the headline average, when deciding whether to raise view distance or enable frame generation.

Common problems and targeted fixes

“I hear movement but cannot place it”

Turn Night Mode off and remove any extra surround or equalizer processing. Confirm that the headset is operating in stereo, then retest in an outdoor route and a machine fight. Natural level differences and cleaner left-right separation are more useful than simply making every sound louder.

“Explosions hide every footstep”

Keep Effects at 100%, set Music and Dialogue to 0%, and test Night Mode on. If compressed audio makes distance ambiguous, leave Night Mode off and lower your comfortable Master Volume only if the overall mix is painful; do not solve masking by listening at unsafe levels.

“The image is smooth but distant targets vanish”

Raise view distance to High or Epic, and use DLSS Quality/Balanced or FSR Balanced before cutting resolution further. Check that foliage is not hiding a large bush, because Low foliage does not remove those larger pieces of cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Frame generation feels sluggish”

Disable it and compare mouse response in the same route and fight. If direct control improves, keep native rendering and reduce a less important setting such as fog, post-processing or effects instead.

“Dark rooms are unreadable”

Increase brightness only enough to reveal interior detail, then check an outdoor scene for washed-out highlights. On consoles, where there are fewer graphics controls, this brightness check is one of the few visibility adjustments available.

No preset replaces deliberate listening and scanning. The strongest baseline is the one that keeps positional audio intelligible, distant geometry present, frame delivery stable and input response immediate on your specific hardware.
