Arabic Programming Languages vs. English-Based Languages: What Changes for Developers?

Arabic-first languages can change code keywords and identifiers, but mixed-direction text and each implementation’s tools and ecosystem matter just as much.

Arabic-first programming languages change the words and, sometimes, the writing system used to express code—not the basic fact that a computer must interpret the program according to a defined language implementation. For developers, the most visible difference is often Arabic syntax alongside right-to-left text, while the practical trade-offs depend on each language’s editor support, libraries, documentation, and maintenance.

What does “Arabic programming language” mean?

The phrase can describe several different things, and a project may support one without supporting the others:

  • Arabic keywords or syntax: language constructs such as instructions and control flow are written using Arabic words.
  • Arabic identifiers: names for variables, functions, or other program elements may be written in Arabic script.
  • An Arabic-first learning environment: lessons, examples, and explanations are designed for Arabic-speaking learners, even if some code or tools remain English-based.

These are distinct design choices. Check what a particular implementation accepts rather than assuming that “Arabic” describes every part of its code, tools, and documentation.

What changes in the code?

Syntax and familiarity

Arabic keywords can make introductory examples feel more familiar to Arabic readers, and Arabic identifiers may let developers name concepts in their own language. That may help with the first steps of learning, but it does not establish that the language is easier overall, that skills transfer seamlessly to another language, or that it has production-ready tools.

Alif’s project describes it as a high-level Arabic programming language intended to help Arabic-speaking students learn programming fundamentals. Its Arabic-language manual presents an educational introduction to programming. These descriptions indicate the project’s stated purpose; they do not establish how widely it is used or how actively it is maintained.

A 2019 paper abstract describes Phoenix as a compiled, high-level, imperative, object-oriented programming language with Arabic syntax and vocabulary. That establishes its stated design, not current support or adoption: Phoenix — The Arabic Object-Oriented Programming Language.

Directionality and mixed-script display

Arabic script runs right to left, while Latin text and digits generally run left to right. Source code, however, commonly mixes Arabic words with English identifiers, numbers, operators, and punctuation. Unicode’s Bidirectional Algorithm governs how such mixed-direction text is displayed; it does not make the program execute in reverse.

Unicode Standard Annex #9 describes “the positioning of characters in text containing characters flowing from right to left, such as Arabic or Hebrew.” The current version listed in the cited source is Unicode 18.0.0, dated 2026-09-01: Unicode Standard Annex #9: Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm.

Display can depend on the directional context of a line or paragraph. Unicode’s FAQ notes that paragraph direction affects the result and that an explicit direction may be needed when automatic inference is wrong: Writing Direction and Bidirectional Text FAQ. This makes rendering worth checking in the editor, terminal, documentation, and debugging output—not just in the source file itself. Unicode’s Arabic chapter provides further context on the script: Unicode 18.0.0, Chapter 9: Arabic.

What does not automatically change?

Arabic keywords do not guarantee that every part of development will be Arabic-first. A language may still rely on English or Latin-script conventions for compilers, libraries, file paths, command-line tools, error messages, and technical documentation. Nor does a familiar-looking syntax by itself show that a language can support a particular project or that its ecosystem matches a mainstream alternative.

The examples above establish that named Arabic-language projects and an educational manual exist. They do not establish broad adoption or comparable editor quality, debugging support, package availability, production deployment, employment demand, or ecosystem performance. Those questions need to be checked for the specific implementation and use case.

How to compare a specific Arabic-first language with an English-based one

Use a small, representative program and evaluate both options against the work you actually want to do:

  • Syntax: Confirm which keywords, identifiers, comments, and library names can be written in Arabic. Test whether the rules are consistent across a complete example.
  • Rendering: Open mixed Arabic and Latin code in the intended editor and terminal. Check numbers, punctuation, line selection, and debugging output for confusing display.
  • Interoperability: Find out whether the language can use the libraries, file formats, and tools required for your project or learning goals.
  • Purpose: Determine whether the implementation is intended for introductory teaching, experimentation with language design, or general-purpose development. These aims are not interchangeable.
  • Maintenance and evidence of use: Look for current releases, usable documentation, issue handling, and visible real-world projects before relying on it for ongoing work.

These checks are questions to investigate, not claims that every Arabic-first implementation has the same capabilities. The available examples do not support naming a universal winner between Arabic-first and English-based languages.

Which should a developer choose?

For a beginner whose immediate goal is to understand programming concepts in Arabic, an Arabic-first educational project may be a useful place to start if its materials and tooling suit them. For a project that depends on particular libraries, collaborative workflows, or long-term support, assess the concrete implementation against those requirements first. A familiar syntax can reduce a language barrier; it cannot substitute for the tools and ecosystem the work needs.
