What VerneMQ is

VerneMQ is an open-source, distributed MQTT publish/subscribe broker for self-hosted messaging. It is designed for scalability, reliability, and high performance in mobile messaging, IoT field devices, and smart infrastructure. The broker implements MQTT 3.1, 3.1.1, and 5.0 with quality-of-service levels 0, 1, and 2. Masterless clustering is designed to keep service operating through node or network failures. Authentication and authorization can use files or integrations with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, and MongoDB, while TLS provides encryption. Listed interfaces include MQTT over WebSocket, HTTP, PROXY v2, bridges, Graphite, Prometheus, Lua scripting, webhooks, and an HTTP Administration API. Monitoring includes a $SYS tree and reporting to Graphite or Prometheus. VerneMQ runs on Linux and Mac OS X; Windows is not currently supported.

Who it suits

It suits teams building self-hosted MQTT infrastructure for connected devices, messaging, or smart systems. Linux-based deployments benefit from its clustering, protocol, authentication, and monitoring options.

What it does well

  • Supports MQTT 3.1, 3.1.1, and 5.0
  • Masterless clustering handles node or network failures
  • TLS encryption is available
  • Integrates with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, and MongoDB
  • Extensible through plugins, Lua, and webhooks

What to know first

  • Windows is not currently supported
  • Production use of packages requires a paid subscription
  • Self-hosted deployment requires your infrastructure

Limits

Binary packages are free to test, but production use of pre-built packages and Docker images requires a paid subscription. Windows deployment is not currently supported.

Getting started

  1. Install VerneMQ on Linux or Mac OS X
  2. Choose a self-hosted deployment environment
  3. Configure MQTT protocol and quality-of-service settings
  4. Set authentication with files or a supported database
  5. Enable TLS and desired bridges, WebSockets, webhooks, or APIs
  6. Connect monitoring through the $SYS tree, Graphite, or Prometheus

Verdict

VerneMQ offers a broad MQTT protocol range, clustering, integrations, and monitoring for self-hosted environments. Check operating-system support and the production subscription requirement before deployment.
