Signet

What Signet is
Signet is an open-source framework for spec-driven contract testing of microservices. Its CLI proxy can capture requests and responses during tests to create consumer contracts in Pact format, while providers use OpenAPI specifications as their authoritative contracts. The test command checks a running provider against its published specification. The Signet Broker manages contracts and provides a web interface for exploring results; Deploy Guard checks compatibility and provider availability before a service is deployed to an environment. CLI commands and broker webhooks can connect testing and deployment checks to CI/CD pipelines. Teams can deploy the broker to AWS with a command that provisions an ECS Fargate cluster and supporting infrastructure, or use Docker Compose for other cloud providers or on-premises hosting. The CLI installs through npm, and the proxy and test commands require Node.js runtime support. Signet does not offer managed deployment, scaling or high availability. Its AWS deployment command requires the AWS CLI and a logged-in default profile with AdministratorAccess. Each consumer-provider integration needs a separate consumer contract, and each provider needs one provider specification.
Who it suits
Signet is designed for teams developing and deploying microservices that need to test service integrations. It is suited to teams able to manage their own broker hosting and deployment infrastructure.
What it does well
- Records test traffic to generate Pact-format consumer contracts.
- Checks running providers against OpenAPI specifications.
- Deploy Guard checks compatibility and provider availability.
- CI/CD pipelines can use CLI commands and broker webhooks.
- Supports AWS and Docker Compose hosting options.
What to know first
- No managed deployment, scaling or high availability.
- AWS deployment requires AdministratorAccess on the default profile.
- Requires a separate contract for each consumer-provider integration.
- Proxy and test commands require Node.js runtime support.
Limits
Each consumer-provider integration needs its own consumer contract, and each provider needs one specification. Signet does not include managed deployment, scaling or high-availability operations.
Getting started
- Install the CLI through npm
- Ensure Node.js runtime support for proxy and test commands
- Record service tests with the CLI proxy to generate consumer contracts
- Publish provider OpenAPI specifications
- Deploy the broker to AWS with signet deploy, or use Docker Compose
- Connect CLI commands and broker webhooks to CI/CD pipelines
Verdict
Signet combines contract generation, provider verification and deployment checks for microservice teams. Its hosting choices are self-managed, and teams should account for its per-integration contract requirement.
Questions
Is Signet free?
Yes. Signet is free and open source.
Which platforms does it support?
Signet is available through API, web and self-hosted deployments.
What contract formats does it use?
Providers use OpenAPI specifications, while consumer contracts use Pact format.
Can Signet run on AWS?
Yes. The signet deploy command provisions an ECS Fargate cluster and broker infrastructure. AWS CLI and a logged-in default profile with AdministratorAccess are required.
Does Signet offer managed hosting?
No. Teams deploy and operate the broker themselves using AWS or Docker Compose.
Who created Signet?
The site credits Hernando Delgado, Zach Morgan, Michael Newman and Eric Vu as creators.
