Rootprint

What Rootprint is
Rootprint is a free, open-source, self-hosted platform for searching logs and traces. It stores indexes in object storage you choose, including S3-compatible storage, Google Cloud Storage, Cloudflare R2, MinIO, Azure Blob, or local disk for a laptop trial. Full-text log search supports field filters, histograms, saved views, and share links. Rootprint ingests OpenTelemetry spans and provides trace search, per-span details, and links between traces and logs. Service pages derive request rate, error rate, p95 latency, operations, dependencies, and errors from spans. Logs and traces can arrive through OTLP, while logs also support a plain HTTP endpoint. Pull-based sources listed in the documentation include Amazon Kinesis, Apache Kafka, and SQS. Teams can use invitations and sign in with Google, GitHub, or an OpenID Connect provider. The documented Docker Compose setup runs Rootprint with Quickwit and Postgres beside an object-storage bucket. It does not provide metrics or alerting.
Who it suits
Rootprint suits teams that want self-hosted log and trace search with control over index storage. It is intended for users comfortable providing their own compute and storage.

Verdict
Rootprint combines searchable logs, trace details, and span-derived service views in a self-hosted package. Choose it when owning deployment and storage matters, while planning separate tools for metrics and alerting.
