Retro-Go

What Retro-Go is
Retro-Go is free firmware for playing retro games on ESP32-based devices. Official support covers ODROID-GO and MRGC-G32, with other ESP32 devices listed separately. Emulated systems include NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game & Watch, Sega systems, Colecovision, PC Engine, Atari Lynx, and DOOM. The launcher offers favorites, recently played games, cover art, save-state previews, multiple save slots, and customization. Display scaling and filtering options adjust presentation, while turbo speed and fast forward change playback speed. A Wi-Fi file manager is available by entering the device IP address on a PC. After Wi-Fi connects, the launcher synchronizes time through pool.ntp.org, and this cannot currently be disabled. Prebuilt images can be installed using SD-card or USB methods. ZIP files should contain one ROM; larger ROMs may fail because support depends on available memory. Building requires ESP-IDF versions 4.4 through 5.3.
Who it suits
It suits owners of supported ESP32 handhelds and developers who want to build, modify, or port retro-gaming firmware.
What it does well
- Supports many classic gaming systems
- Save states and multiple save slots
- Customizable launcher with cover art
- Wi-Fi file manager included
- Prebuilt and build-from-source paths
What to know first
- Official support names only two devices
- NTP synchronization cannot be disabled
- Large ZIP ROMs may fail
- Requires ESP32 with PSRAM
Verdict
Retro-Go provides broad console emulation and launcher features for ESP32 hardware. Device compatibility, memory limits, and mandatory time synchronization are important constraints when installing or porting it.
