RealPlayer

Overview

RealPlayer 25 is a PC media player and organizer built around saving online video as well as playing and managing media. It is a strong fit for people who want a downloader, library tools and playback in one product, but less compelling if free high-resolution downloads or cloud storage are essential.

Its standout advantage is control over downloads, from selecting a format and resolution to saving audio separately. The trade-off is a 720p ceiling and in-product ads on the free plan; reaching up to 8K requires a paid option.

Key features

Smart Download saves videos from thousands of sites, including Facebook, Twitch, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. Advanced stream selection lets users choose file type, codec and resolution up to 8K, or download audio as MP3 or M4A. This flexibility suits people with specific playback or storage needs, although the free plan's 720p limit curtails the quality advantage unless they upgrade.

RealPlayer says YouTube users can sign in to reach private, Watch Later and Liked videos, download playlists and subscribe to channels. It can also record live YouTube streams. Chromecast casting, network playback, subtitle support and compatibility with current codecs, RealAudio and RealVideo give it a broader playback role than a standalone downloader.

Library tools organize videos by people, find scenes with specific people, remove duplicates and create video and audio playlists. RealPlayer Mobile for iOS and Android adds offline viewing, syncing, cloud backup and Chromecast casting. That extends the product to mobile use, though cloud storage is not included with the free desktop plan.

Format support spans 3GP, 3G2, AAC, AIFF, AVI, CDA, DivX, FLAC, FLV, MKV, MP3, MPEG, MOV, Ogg, QuickTime, RealAudio, RealVideo, WAV, WebM, WMA and WMV. RealNetworks' privacy policy says collected information may include downloaded content and associated domains, feature use, and media uploaded or added to RealPlayer. It cites SSL connections, database access controls, encryption for sensitive information and limited employee access as security measures. Customer service, billing and technical help are directed through RealNetworks' support page.

Pricing

The Free plan costs nothing. It allows downloads up to 720p, includes no cloud storage, and displays in-product ads and upsells. It is a reasonable starting point for standard-definition downloading and playback, but not for users who need higher-resolution downloads or an ad-free experience.

Premium costs $4.99 a month, billed $4.99/mo, or $49.99/yr on the annual plan. It raises the download limit to 8K, includes 25 GB of cloud storage, removes ads and installs on 3 computers, with all feature releases. It is the most complete choice for users who need storage and multiple installs; the annual option lowers the stated monthly rate only if they are comfortable with an annual commitment.

Downloader Express costs $24.99, paid once. It supports downloads up to 8K but has no cloud storage and retains in-product ads and upsells. It suits someone seeking a one-time purchase for higher-resolution downloads who can accept those omissions.

Plus costs $39.99, paid once. It also supports up to 8K downloads, has no cloud storage, removes ads and includes latest minor releases. Compared with Downloader Express, the additional cost buys an ad-free experience and minor releases, but not cloud storage or all feature releases.

RealPlayer Downloader for Mac is free for a limited time. It is an early release requiring macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon. This is a narrow option for owners of supported Macs, not a general Mac offering.

Platforms

RealPlayer supports Windows, iOS and Android; RealPlayer Mobile is available for iOS and Android. The Mac downloader is an early release limited to macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon. The product is also described as a PC media player and organizer, so the Mac option should not be mistaken for the same established desktop offering.

Who it's for

RealPlayer is best for people who routinely save online videos, want to choose download quality or audio format, and value playlists and library organization alongside playback. Premium is the clearest fit for users who need cloud storage, multiple computer installs and no ads. Occasional users may prefer Free if 720p is enough; people who only want a player, or who need cloud storage without a subscription, should compare alternatives and plan limits closely.

Pros and cons

• Pros: Downloads from many named video sites and offers stream, codec and resolution selection, including up to 8K on paid plans.
• Pros: Combines downloading with playback, casting, subtitles, playlists and library organization, including duplicate removal.
• Pros: Premium includes 25 GB of cloud storage and installs on 3 computers.
• Cons: Free downloads stop at 720p, with no cloud storage and in-product ads and upsells.
• Cons: The one-time Downloader Express and Plus plans have no cloud storage; Express also retains ads and upsells.

Alternatives

mpv is a better match for someone seeking a free, open-source command-line media player with wide media-format, codec and subtitle support rather than RealPlayer's downloading and library focus.

5KPlayer is another free player option with no subscription required, for readers who want to compare a player without RealPlayer's paid plan structure.

Infuse is worth considering for iOS or macOS users who want its stated additional video formats and high-resolution Dolby and DTS-HD audio. Its Pro Monthly plan is $1.99 a month and includes a free 7-day trial.

MPlayer is a free option for readers seeking software under the GNU General Public License version 2.

Verdict

Choose RealPlayer if you want online video downloading, format control and practical library tools together, especially if Premium's cloud storage and three-computer installs fit your needs. Look elsewhere if free downloads must exceed 720p, if you need cloud storage without a subscription, or if you want a simpler player rather than a downloader-led media suite.
